You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost): A Memoir
You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost): A Memoir | Felicia Day
The instant New York Times bestseller from "queen of the geeks" Felicia Day, You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) is a "relentlessly funny and surprisingly inspirational" (Forbes.com) memoir about her unusual upbringing, her rise to internet stardom, and embracing her weirdness to find her place in the world. When Felicia Day was a girl, all she wanted was to connect with other kids (desperately). Growing up in the Deep South, where she was "home-schooled for hippie reasons," she looked online to find her tribe. The Internet was in its infancy and she became an early adopter at every stage of its growth--finding joy and unlikely friendships in the emerging digital world. Her relative isolation meant that she could pursue passions like gaming, calculus, and 1930's detective novels without shame. Because she had no idea how "uncool" she really was. But if it hadn't been for her strange background--the awkwardness continued when she started college at sixteen, with Mom driving her to campus every day--she might never have had the nave confidence to forge her own path. Like when she graduated as valedictorian with a math degree and then headed to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting despite having zero contacts. Or when she tired of being typecast as the crazy cat-lady secretary and decided to create her own web series before people in show business understood that online video could be more than just cats chasing laser pointers. Felicia's rags-to-riches rise to Internet fame launched her career as one of the most influen-tial creators in new media. Ever candid, she opens up about the rough patches along the way, recounting battles with writer's block, a full-blown gaming addiction, severe anxiety, and depression--and how she reinvented herself when overachieving became overwhelming. Showcasing Felicia's "engaging and often hilarious voice" (USA TODAY), You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) is proof that everyone should celebrate what makes them different and be brave enough to share it with the world, because anything is possible now--even for a digital misfit.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Another memoir by a quirky redhead. I know Day from Supernatural, and I am pleased to say that she seems every bit as funny and insightful as I would have expected. My only complaint is the lack of any juicy details of her time on Supernatural, and (my fault) that since I am not familiar with the web show she wrote and starred in, The Guild, those chapters were a tiny bit lost to me. Now I have to go familiarize myself.

-The foreword by Joss Whedon was so cringy.
-1st half of the book did not hold my attention as she talked about family life, being homeschooled and college and being an over achiever.
-2nd half was great, I love the Guild and when we got into that portion I was hooked! The Guild, her struggles with anxiety and depression and #GamerGate were discussed in the last half and it was humorous while still being vulnerable and relatable.

I know this isn‘t the fanciest book journal 📓🤓 but I had to add my last finished book and check my progress. 5 books by the end of June (totally doable!) will get me 1/2 way to my goal 1/2 way through the year! (Yellow highlighted are audiobooks, green are conventional, I designated blue for ebook but haven‘t read any yet) tagged book is started and will be #26 or 27

These two books stand out as reads that #motivated me to take a chance, try something, say yes, and figure out me. I don't really read self help, but these combine memoir with motivation. Highly recommended reads!

This is the book I have probably read/listened to the most since I was in school.

It's like having a friend always around to tell you fun, weird stories and keep you company.

So much love for Felicia Day and her inspirational (to me) work ♡

I should probably use a more flattering pic of Felicia, but eh, this one's amusing.

I'm a fan of Felicia Day, and have been since The Guild was released back in the day. It's surprising it took me this long to pick up this book, honestly.

I had fun with this book. It's very much a memoir, and as usual she's very honest, even when you can tell it hurts a little. After reading this, I'm looking forward to her upcoming book.

I. Loved. This. Book!
The writing was wonderful! Fully accessible and charming, I very quickly found myself not only identifying a lot with her, but laughing out loud too. She was so open and honest. And even though she talked about things like depression and anxiety, she injected it with humor. This book has inspired me to be more creative. Felicia Day is a badass. Seriously. Five full stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

It‘s raining and overcast today, and this kind of weather almost always gives me a headache. So I‘m having some coffee (irregular heartbeat be damned) and listening to this audiobook. I‘m hoping the small jolt of caffeine will help my head, and Arya is enjoying licking out my empty mug. 👍☕️

The app will probably always remain my go-to incarnation of litsy, but I think the website is a very nice addition.

IndoorDame @Traci1 this time it paid off, but audiobooks are always a gamble, still I‘m one of those readers who likes always having a physical book an audiobook and an ebook so I can switch titles depending on if I‘m washing dishes/waiting in line at the dmv/home relaxing etc 6y

I'm going to have to go back and rewatch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Despite the fact that I can't say that I remember Felicia Day, this memoir was an entertaining enough read.

"I mean, why isn't HGTV the same channel in every city? Why do they have to make it so hard to decompress while watching people remodel things? I need to see couples fight over landscaping costs before I go to sleep at night. This is important for me!"

LoveToReadLiveToRead Now I‘M going to have to go back and watch it too! X 6y

#12 In my humble opinion, there's no better way to read a celebrity memoir than to listen to them read it. They're just sharing their story of success and they'll get the tone exactly right. When I read it on my own, I get the tone all wrong and they sound condescending. I'm a big fan of The Guild and Dr. Horrible Sing Along Blog, so I enjoyed reading about how this math/music prodigy managed to make it in Hollywood via the Internet. #Readharder

Although I didn't have an eccentric upbringing and I'm not much of a gamer (because I know I'd become unhealthily obsessed), I can completely relate to Felicia...especially the neurotic, anxious, & awkward Felicia. Truely funny and inspiring, Felicia Day has officially been moved up to RL role model...most of my role models are more fictional, so yay! 🙌
