From the award-winning author of Wonder Valley and Visitation Street comes a serial killer story like youve never seen beforea literary thriller of female empowerment and social change In West Adams, a rapidly changing part of South Los Angeles, theyre referred to as these women. These women on the corner These women in the club These women who wont stop asking questions These women who got what they deserved In her masterful new novel, Ivy Pochoda creates a kaleidoscope of loss, power, and hope featuring five very different women whose lives are steeped in danger and anguish. Theyre connected by one man and his deadly obsession, though not all of them know that yet. Theres Dorian, still adrift after her daughters murder remains unsolved; Julianna, a young dancer nicknamed Jujubee, who lives hard and fast, resisting anyone trying to slow her down; Essie, a brilliant vice cop who sees a crime pattern emerging where no one else does; Marella, a daring performance artist whose work has long pushed boundaries but now puts her in peril; and Anneke, a quiet woman who has turned a willfully blind eye to those around her for far too long. The careful existence they have built for themselves starts to crumble when two murders rock their neighborhood. Written with beauty and grit, tension and grace, These Women is a glorious display of storytelling, a once-in-a-generation novel.

I really liked this book. While the tone was grim and depressing, I felt like you got to know the characters well. I could hear Feelia‘s voice so clearly. The author‘s message of what does it take for women to be listened to was evident on every page. Not an easy book to read, but a good one.

I really liked this book. I was invested in to the story from the beginning; Murder, women not being believed, detective work…it has everything. I will say the book description gave too much away, and I figured out the end because of it pretty early on. So maybe don‘t read the description, and go in knowing it‘s about sex workers being killed and the female detective trying to solve it, delivered from 6 points of view.

magyklyXdelish I agree! The description gave it away!!! 2y

I loved the overwhelming theme of believing women and I appreciated the realism behind the fact that not a lot of women are. There were a couple characters I couldn‘t find myself attached to and considering this is told in multiple perspectives, this is why I didn‘t rate higher. I still enjoyed this one though and hope my #LMPBC family does too.

This book was straight-up phenomenal. Heartbreakingly and beautifully written, this story follows five women who, on the surface have next to nothing in common, but share a deep bond of being chewed up and spit back out by the world. Every perspective had its own unique voice and had me me fully immersed in every page. Even though the world is a dark, haunted, and gritty place, this book reminds you to never let it dull the person you truly are.

Foregrounding the story of “those people” five women, each connected to a murdered prostitute, narrates part of the story. Their narratives are interspersed with brief selections from a woman who survived having her throat cut. It has a slow start the initial voice being one I never connected with. The story requires the added viewpoints, layering to become compelling and increase the tension to the guessed-at reveal of the murderer‘s identity.

So #readersgonerogue what do you make of these options?

FantasyChick I'd be all over These Women or Nightingale but the Merit Badge book sounds like it might be some interesting Canadiana. So pretty much anything except Euphoria for me. It sounded good until it got to the possibility of a love triangle 🤷‍♀️ 3y

This is not your typical serial killer novel. It‘s told from five overlooked women‘s points of view about the murders of other overlooked women. Each woman‘s POV is told entirely before moving on to the next, building upon each other to give you the entire story. I think the narrative style was the reason it took me until the second full POV to get sucked in. In the end, I thought this was great. #Screamathon #Bookspin #BookspinBingo

vivastory I've heard mixed things about this one, but your review has intrigued me! 3y

It‘s the first day of early voting in Texas. I read the tagged book while I stood in line to cast my ballot. #vote

It was the first time I have been inside a library since March. It made me a little sad. ☹️ #librarylove

A serial killer in South LA, the victims all sex workers. THESE WOMEN are overlooked, judged, often ignored by the police and “good” citizens but this is their story. Told through 6 different women we hear from THESE WOMEN, we SEE them. I didn‘t care for the narration, except for the few parts read by Bahni Turpin, so I switched to print. This was a slow burn but it never fully captured me. Good but not my favorite.

Wowza!! Set in South LA, this rather literary mystery is absolutely riveting!! Impressively well done, this one handles it all beautifully- detailed and authentic setting, characters that feel totally real, super strong visuals throughout and a plot that surrounds a serial killer that the reader can piece together from the way the story is revealed through these varied perspectives. Gritty and fresh- I can‘t wait to check out her earlier novels!!

An immersive and gritty reading experience. Never been to LA, I'm a small town girl, but man did the city come alive for me through the fictional eyes of the women in this novel. It's insane (and something I've not thought of before) that most "thrillers" focus on crimes against women, but are from the point of view of men/ readers looking into the "minds of the perp". This is female-centric and refreshing, though dark. I loved it. 05.19.2020
