Pay It Forward (Reissue)
Pay It Forward (Reissue) | Catherine Ryan Hyde
23 posts | 18 read | 9 to read
An immediate bestseller when first published, "Pay It Forward "captured hearts all over the world, became a wildly popular film starring Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt, and spawned a generation of increased altruism. This fifteenth anniversary edition includes a new introduction by the author. It takes an inspiring and moving tale of a young boy who believed in the power of kindness and brings it to a new generation of readers. Twelve-year-old Trevor McKinney accepts his social studies teacher s challenge: come up with a plan to change the world. His idea is simple: Do a good deed for three people and ask them to pay it forward to three others in need. He envisions a vast movement of kindness and goodwill spreading beyond his small California town and across the world. The project, however, appears to falter. Jerry, a bum who receives some allowance money from Trevor, returns to a life of dissolution. Trevor wants his pretty, hardworking mother a woman who raised him lovingly despite struggles with alcoholism to marry his teacher, Reuben St. Clair. Reuben is a scarred, bitter, untrusting man with a disfiguring injury from Vietnam. He seems to come alive only when in front of his class. For a time that matchmaking brings nothing but problems. Ultimately, though, unusual things start to happen. Crime rates dip across the nation, and nobody seems to know why. Then a journalist tracks down the source: an epidemic of random acts of kindness. Anyone who has ever despaired of one person s ability to effect change will rejoice in Trevor s courage and determination to see the good in everyone."

I liked this book, although it was sad. I think it was a good thought for a story.

Reading Pay it Forward on my lunch break today!

Thank you again everyone for all the kind messages over the weekend. Things haven't really changed. I also found out my sister left in the middle of the night to go back to her ex and took a stack of my books and some other stuff I'd lent her, so who knows if I'll ever see those again. Ugh, I'm just taking it one day at a time. 😓

Lynnsoprano I hadn‘t seen your previous posts, just now went back and read them. Hugs and hang in there. It‘s hard to admit that your parent is toxic; I had to do it with my mom, and I don‘t think I‘ll ever be truly over it. As you say, one day at a time. Take some time for yourself. Nothing wrong with getting lost in a good book. 5y
Librariana I'm with @Lynnsoprano on this one - I also had not read your previous posts (until now) and am so very sorry to learn about what you're going through 😔 It's tough to experience toxic interactions such as these with family members... to feel like establishing trust is a fragile thing... and then to also pile worry about a loved one's wellbeing on top of everything else. My heart goes out to you and I wish you continued strength and resilience. 5y
cobwebmoth Hugs to you. 5y

SleepyDragon Often family dynamics are hard and frustrating enough without the added complications of addiction. Hang in there and stay strong. 5y
Lissie Bless your heart and soul and prey that those around you will be in a better place soon for themselves and for you. I wish all the positive vibes i can offer x ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 5y

Not sure why, but I was surprised by the little differences between this book and the movie. And the story of the author's inspiration for the novel was really cool. But what I really liked about this book was the way it was written in pieces from different character perspectives. Not all authors can make it work, but this was well done. And emotional. Read with some tissues...and maybe the expectation of frustration. #LitsyAtoZ

Next up for my Before They Were Movies Book Club! I've seen the movie and bawled like a little girl, but it's been a while, so hopefully I've forgotten some things.

DivineDiana I used to show this movie to my students every year. No matter how many times I saw it, it still touched my heart. 7y
readinginthedark @DivineDiana There are some physical inconsistencies between the characters and their movie counterparts, but the actors did such a good job! What age did you teach? 7y

#augustphotochallenge Here's a unique fact about myself (which, in this company, I'm a little hesitant to admit): >>> I don't keep books. I buy them, but usually pass them along to friends or library sales or little free libraries.

Kathrin I am right with you... I couldn't care less about the physical book, once I am done with it. 8y
NerdyRev Cool! I usually sell or donate. Only a few select stay behind. 8y
LauraBeth I ❤️ this. While I do still keep books, I still give a ton away by donating them or leaving them behind (my favorite way of doing this is on the subway in NYC). Happy that you're sharing your books 😀 8y
See All 23 Comments
Bookbeez I keep my favorites and favorite series and donate the rest, but I do buy a lot secondhand, so always plenty to read plus library books. 8y
prowlix I try really hard to donate books that I know I'm not going to reread! Sometimes I'll even wait a year and if I haven't given it a second thought it goes into the library donation 8y
HeatherBookNerd Me too 👍🏼 8y
Reviewsbylola I need to do this more. I am planning a massive clean out to take to Half Price Books to find new books but I do occasionally stock a local Free Little Library and loan books out. 8y
Varshitha Me too.. I keep only a few which mean a lot to me..I don't give away though.. My used bookstore gives back half the price I paid when I return the books.. I use this money and get more books.. It has become a cycle 8y
KellyKate I would keep them until I filled a bag and then take to Half Price Books. After receiving $15. for a Whole Foods bag of new releases (hardback!) I now donate them to my local hospital- and the Little Libraries a couple of towns away. There was a program where you could leave the books and when someone picked them up they would enter the info and the books could be tracked, but where I live that concept didn't take. Love the NYC subway idea tho! 8y
GinaAnderson I really should do this. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I donate many, many of my books also! 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 As soon as I finish a book, I pass it on. I like when other people enjoy the same books!! Most go to my friends and acquaintances and some are donated to thrift stores and libraries. 8y
Coleen No shame in that! Same here. Many of mine go for trade on PaperBackSwap or I BookCross them. Rarely keep them, unless they're ultimate faves. 8y
ultrabookgeek @Coleen I used to bookcross whenever I had duplicates, which was an absurd amount of times! 8y

[DELETED] 3558467437 Glad to know that I am not alone 😃 8y
BookHermit It's what's inside that counts after all! We used to have a huge collection of books but we sold a good portion of them after having kids. Now with ebooks all my hoarding is digital 😬 8y
haileybean I'm a firm believer that if I want my friend to read a book I'd better be ok with parting with that book or buying a new one. 8y
ReadingOver50 I usually keep hard covers and give away the paperbacks 8y
HotMessJess Has to be so hard! I get so attached to books- they become like family! I attach so many emotions/ places to each book I read!! 8y
Zelma I think you're actually in good company. I post shelfie pics here but they always change! I only keep a small pile that I constantly re-read (maybe 5-10 titles) plus reference and travel guides. A few vintage etiquette books. But everything else gets rotated out - give to friends, donate to library, leave on free shelf at coffee shop. 👍 8y
quirkyreader When I'm done with mine they will go back to the library, be traded with family, be donated to Indy Reads, or left at The Monon Coffee book exchange. Indy Reads is the local adult literacy program and they run a bookshop. All the proceeds go back to the literacy program. 8y
Christy2318 I rarely buy books and when I do it is mostly at library book sales or Half Price Books. Of the books I buy most of them go to library as donation after I read them. I am a huge fan of the library. I have cards from two and usually have several dozen books checked out at any given time. 8y

Such a sweet story. Trevor❤️ Read Author's introduction as to genesis of story, what happened to her. This is possible, we could do this. The world could do this, if we tried.
