I picked this book up for the #dogtags prompt in #ISpyBingo
Glad I did, it's excellent so far and also filled a #WickedWords prompt.

I chose two books set mostly in the Pacific theater of WWII. It‘s been a long time since I read Code Talker, but I remember it being a fantastic book about the Navajo code talkers that served in the U.S. military. Grenade is told from the alternating perspectives of a Japanese teenager and a young U.S. Marine during the Battle of Okinawa.

This is how a historical fiction novel should be written. I loved hearing more about WWII Navajo Code Talkers. Dates and historical events were accurate and I liked that this was told as a grandfather sharing his story and wisdom with his grandchildren.

My nonfiction for the month.
Thanks @RamsFan1963 for the tag!
1. No
2. Yes! The Navajo language was used to transmit messages during WWII. Highly recommend tagged book. #audiobook #audioathon #littenlisten @aperfectmjk #two4tuesday @TheSpineView
⭐️⭐️⭐️ While really informative, this book had very little by way of actual story or character, which I would‘ve liked to see! Read for school
Cloud decided to sit with me as I read today! He looks very grumpy to have his picture taken.

Everyone is getting books for Christmas! Hooray! One for my son,2 for my daughter and one for my father!
Fleming Begaye Sr., died on May 10, 2019 at the age of 97. He was one of the last remaining members of an elite group of Navajo people who used their language to help transmit top-secret military information during WWII. RIP code talkers
I struggle with both war books and, particularly, WWII books. I find that novels with that base often exploit the tragedy of the terrible for the dramatic value. I appreciated that this did not do that. It tells the story of people whose stories too often went untold in a restrained, respectful manner that I think the code talkers themselves would find well-done.
Met a real “code talker” today, while on vacation; he was 20 at the time of WWII and is now 93!
The book is one about the Code Talkers, but he did not write it nor is featured. He‘s one of seven still alive and spreading the word about the Native American military members.
I have not read this book in years! It is one of my personal favorites! I am currently trying to get my brother to read it instead of books with baseball. He is too old for those!
Students working on their Code Talker Illustrated Dictionary. We are studying author's craft in historical fiction.
Just finished. This was so well written. The protagonist is a compilation of people. I intend to have both my teens read this. If you love Navajo history, Marine Corp History, or have an interest in the Pacific part of WWII, I highly recommend. If you have an interest in the issues faced by Native Americans I also recommend it.
"It was one of the best conversations I ever had."
Beginning this today.
This not completely set on an island, but much of it does take place in Hawaii and other Pacific islands during WWII. It also seems a very appropriate book to share on Pearl Harbor Day.

I really enjoyed this book. I listened to it on audio and liked the historical references and stories told about the Navajo people and language being used during WWII. I may have to listen to it again on a road trip with the teeny-boppers, it's right up their alley.
