The Horse and His Boy
The Horse and His Boy: (The Chronicles of Narnia) - C. S. Lewis | C. S. Lewis,C.S.
116 posts | 465 read | 2 reading | 32 to read
The Horse and His Boy, book three in the classic fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia, featuring cover art by Cliff Nielsen and black-and-white interior artwork by the original illustrator of Narnia, Pauline Baynes. On a desperate journey, two runaways meet and join forces. Though they are only looking to escape their harsh and narrow lives, they soon find themselves at the center of a terrible battle. It is a battle that will decide their fate and the fate of Narnia itself. The Horse and His Boy is the third book in C. S. Lewis's classic fantasy series, which has been drawing readers of all ages into a magical land where horses talk and destiny awaits for over sixty years. This is a novel that stands on its own, but if you would like to explore more of Narnia, read Prince Caspian, the fourth book in The Chronicles of Narnia.

This book was good but definitely not the best in the series. It made me think of The little prince. Excited to be moving on to the next book in the series :)

“No one is told any story but their own.” This book is magically unique in a book series that is already magically unique in itself. From the viewpoint of the most unlikely of adventurers we learn that everyone‘s story is far more significant than they themselves can see. Whether horse or boy everyone has a part to play if only they are willing. #narnia #52challenge

This book didn‘t age as well as the ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe‘, however it served its purpose as a much needed palate cleanser. Good to see Susan, Edmund, and Lucy again. Always a joy!

Vansa The horse and his boy has always been my favourite Narnia book. I love the weaving in of Arabian nights themed fantasy into this. And I like the subverting of tropes, that flighty, chirpy Lasaraleen, when it comes down to it, shows immense bravery to help her friend. 2y
imyril I've always had a soft spot for these two although I suspect I'd have a lot of eyeroll these days for the way Lewis depicts the Calormenes. Nephew is the one that has stayed with me - I have always found Jadis unusual as a children's fantasy villain and appreciated her all the more for it; and Uncle Andrew is just nastier and better observed the older I get. Such small-minded and very human sins all round (however big Jadis's ambitions!) 2y

I didn‘t remember a lot of this one so it was good to revisit it. We‘re back in Narnia during the time of King Peter & Edmund and Queens Susan and Lucy, who are adults in this story. The focus is more on Shasta and Bree, a runaway horse and boy.

It's probably even more problematic than the other Narnia books, but The Horse and His Boy is still a fun little romp for young and old.

Meh. We get the Pevensies back for this story, but as Narnian rulers and not as precocious children, and it wasn't enough to save the story. This one had racial sterotypes along with a bland adventure. It had a few bright spots, but even though it was only 4 hours on audio, the story and narrator made this a bit of a slog to get through. Perhaps this story would have benefited from my reading it. Oh well!

It took me an awfully long time to read this book because I was bored for the first 7 chapters. After that, it began to pick up, and I read from chapter 8 to the end today. I understand the complaints about the racism — the Calormen are stereotypes of people from the Middle East. And that name for the people and the country! Calormene, really? In the end, I liked the story, so I gave it a pick instead of a so-so. #narniareadalong

KathyWheeler @CaffeineAndCandy Just an FYI: I read The Magician‘s Nephew last year and still remember it pretty well, so I‘m not doing the read along for that book. I‘ll join in again for The Last Battle. I‘m so excited that I can finally say I‘ve read these books. Thanks for doing this! 3y

I‘m in the minority on this one. This is the first time I didn‘t finish a #NarniaReadalong on time. Despite the return of the Pevensie children, It didn‘t keep me interested and even the British accent on audio didn‘t make it any better. I only gave this two stars because I can‘t bare to give Lewis one. On to my series favorite next.

I honestly did not remember any of this one from when I read it as a child. Although I loved the adventure part, I found the turban wearing, scimitar carrying, slave owning, worshipers of a false god (not Aslan) a bit more prejudiced/stereotyped to me now as an adult and maybe more of a side comment on the Crusades/Muslims (in a justifying way) than I think Lewis intended, despite his Christian themes. And of course in this tale, the good guys ⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ (Christians/Narnians) get invaded and get to defend themselves righteously against the heathens, nothing like twisting the story in a retelling. In all fairness though, I feel the same pang with the swarthy “bad” humans from LOTR too…. Great stories, sweeping themes, but some of the decision making in telling it are very telling of the time in which it was written. (edited) 3y

Really enjoyed revisiting this one. For some reason, it was one of my least favorites growing up, but I liked it more this time around. Maybe reading it at a slower paced helped?? I also liked the underlying theme about how things - even bad ones - happen for a reason. As always, thanks for hosting the #NarniaReadalong @CaffeineAndCandy - this has been a great way to finally get around to a reread of this series!!!

This is probably one of the books in the series I felt I remembered the least about, and it was another very enjoyable reread. I think what I miss in this one is kids traveling from our world to Narnia, instead Peter, Edmund, Susan, and Lucy are more in the background as kings and queens.

#NarniaReadalong #audiobook

TH3F4LC0N I remember liking this one. I think it was a little darker than the others, iirc; it dealt with slavery and stuff I think. But The Magician‘s Nephew will always be my favorite. Getting to see where Jadis came from; that dying world with the red sun...Things got kinda cosmic. Loved it. 3y
Daisey @TH3F4LC0N I don‘t think it will replace a favorite, but I am really looking forward to a reread of The Magician‘s Nephew. 3y

This entertaining romp through the lands of Calormen and Archenland takes place during the reign of Kings Peter and Edmund and Queens Susan and Lucy. We meet Shasta, a boy with a mysterious past, Aravis, a girl escaping hers and the Talking Horses that carry them to their destinies.

This was a fun adventure to read. It reminds us that our stories have been guided in ways unknown to us.

This book was actually quite boring and if it wasn‘t for the brief appearance of Susan, you could hardly tell it was a Narnia book. I could hardly care about the Shasta character at all, and really the only part I really liked was where Aslan kept him from falling off a cliff by breathing on his shoulder.

'Like most days when you are alone and waiting for something this day seemed about 100 hours long'

I'm not sure about this book, it felt like a typical filler that you find in every series. A book to beef out the series but doesnt relate to or impact anything.

I also feel it failed to portray the magic and amazement of the worlds that the two previous books do so well. Mr Tumnus has lost his personality, it just all fell flat for me.

The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis published in 1954 is the third book of his series. The Chronicles of Narnia all focus on modern fantasy. Narnia is a mystery land that gets explored by many leading to tough situations.
