Saving the universe from star eaters. “Memory gap / flashbacks / amnesia drugs” chronology flipping is cheesy, but allows Grace interaction outside of isolation. Lotsa space chemistry. I resisted Rocky, but found fondness. Would watch Rocky sleep. My new mantra: “I may not have all the answers, but I‘m here.” 2021

P390 “I‘m not the right guy for this job. I‘m a last-second replacement because the actually qualified people blew up. But I‘m here.”

My husband and I listened to Project Hail Mary as our road trip book. We both loved it. He said the science was good, and it wasn‘t too far over my head too often. The story was great and touching. I wasn‘t expecting that ending. I liked The Martian, but loved this book. We started Agent to the Stars, and I continued with The Ghost Orchid on my #audiowalk

Texreader I love that you both listen to audiobooks together. Wish my hubs would do that! 2mo
KathyWheeler @Texreader I suggested it on a trip one time — I think with the first Dresden Files book — and he found he really enjoyed them. I‘d been listening to them for years on my walks and in the car by myself. 2mo

"Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir. 7,9/10 rating.
For me, this book was pretty controversial. The first half of the book i felt distracted, but after it began picking up pace it was quite fun and interesting.
Still, these are not my kind of books, but I must say I liked it a lot more than other books of this type. Thanks, dad for recommending it to me!
Ps: I shipped Ryland with Stratt, am I the only one??

Running Saturday errands & the craft market I planned to lunch at had very limited food options today (hot ramen & look at the temp—TMI but today‘s snarky weather quote is sadly true! Doubly sad for November vibes!)😓

I stopped for to-go poke & as all the outside seating area is full I‘m enjoying lunch & air con in my car listening finally to the tagged book. It‘s a bit disquieting as the narrator sounds like my old colleague “Safety Steve.”😆

Cortg Sounds like a rough day! 🤣 5mo

Here are a few questions to start the conversation. Fill free to talk about anything. I thought this was an outstanding book and hope you guys enjoyed it as much as I did.

@Larkken @Deblovestoread @bnp @ravenlee @Johanna414 @BookmarkTavern @julesG @sebrittainclark @BookBelle84 @Readergrrl @CSeydel

julesG 1) tricky. It wasn't too much for me, but I thought that some of it was just to show off how brilliant Ryland Grace is. 6mo
See All 10 Comments
Ruthiella I enjoyed this book much more than The Martian. It had too much science for me personally, but I just glossed over it. Rocky and Ryland were both loners I think who found their soul mate in each other. 😂 I think Startt did the right thing…the good of the many. (edited) 6mo
majkia I read this book earlier in the year and loved it. I love the science! 6mo
ravenlee I actually enjoyed the science bits, it felt like manageable pieces broken up throughout the story so there wasn‘t a massive science infodump anywhere. And Stratt…was a piece of work in a lot of ways, but she did what was necessary. My favorite part about her was when she acknowledged, facetiously or not) that she would likely face charges after the resolution of the crisis. 6mo
CatLass007 I think the book had just the right amount of science to please people who enjoy the science-y part of science fiction. And not too much science to make the non-scientists stop reading. I love the friendship between Ryland and Rocky. They had to work together to learn to communicate and because they learned how to communicate they were able to make the science to solve the problem plaguing both their planets. 6mo
kwmg40 I enjoy books with lots of science, but I found the science-fiction ideas less plausible than in The Martian. I liked the friendship between Ryland and Rocky, and the efforts in communicating were both interesting and entertaining. I can accept Stratt's actions under the circumstances. 6mo
PaperbackPirate I thought it was a good amount of science as well. Ryland is a scientist doing science stuff so it made sense in the context and didn‘t feel forced to me. I loved the similarities between Ryland and Rocky. They both wanted to save their people (eventually ;) and were both very skilled in their fields. They also seemed to have a similar sense of humor. Stratt made the hard decisions a leader has to make. Cool characters! 6mo
Bookwomble 1) The science aspect felt reasonable & self-consistent for me. I'd've been happy with more, but it was also enough. 2) Yeah, I really liked the relationship between Ryland & Rocky. Although I don't mind "aliens want to eat your brains" stories, I actually prefer "what can we learn by befriending beings with different perspectives" stories. 3) Stratt did what was necessary. IRL, I can't imagine politicians giving up their power in this way. 6mo

97/150 I'll be the first to admit I didn't finish The Martian, got bogged down in the science. I thought I'd have the same problem with this, but ended up enjoying it a lot. One thing like like about Weir's characters is they work the problem. No magic, no dumb luck or coincidence, they do the math, solve the equations and save the day. The end was a bit anticlimactic but overall an excellent adventure. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

Excellent choice, even though I didn't vote for it myself, which is a good outcome!
The Sci element is hard-school, but not so much that it's like reading a technical manual, the Fi element is engaging and with enough lightheartedness to leaven the "future of humankind at risk" high-stakes loaf (my metaphors are out of control here!). And, I really enjoyed the relationship between the two MCs. 4.75⭐

Got to page 100, and I'm enjoying it so far. Eminently filmable, which I guess is the idea: this first part is the recruitment phase of the Project, with neat contrasts between settings & characters, which gives the narrative a propulsive forward momentum.

I have tallied all the votes and the winner is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. This is a reread for myself. I enjoyed it and look forward to sinking back into this book.

The page count is 476. Therefore, it will span two months. Open discussion will begin at the end of October. Let me know if you have any questions or if you are having trouble getting a copy. Since this came out in 2021 there should be plenty of used copies around.

CSeydel I have already read this one but it‘s a rare 5-star pick for me! Maybe I‘ll reread it for the club. 8mo

CatLass007 @TheSpineView I just wanted to clarify something. You‘re calling this the September selection for the #LitsySciFiBookClub but the first half of the book will be discussed at the end of October and the second half will be discussed at the end of November? What book(s) will be discussed at the end of August and the end of September? 8mo
TheSpineView @CatLass007 The book we are currently reading, A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe, will discussed at the end of August. Any book over 350 pages will span a two month time frame and be discussed at the end of the time period. Which for Project Hail Mary will be the end of October. Nothing discussed in September 8mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView Thank you for “unconfusing” me. 8mo
TheSpineView @CatLass007 👍😘🌞 8mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView Do you have a specific date for when you will be discussing The Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe? The audiobook is available now via Libby. I pretty much only read audiobooks. I have chronic migraines and e-books are out of the question. Books on paper are wonderful and they take up a ton of room, so I‘m deaccessioning my print library. There‘s a local used book store that will give cash, store credit, or a (cont)⬇️ 8mo
CatLass007 combination of the two. I like cash but I‘ll settle for store credit because I still read graphic novels and I still use craft books. I‘m sorry. I don‘t know why I‘m rambling on. I just wanted to know if you have a specific date planned for the discussion. 8mo
TheSpineView @CatLass007 Discussion will start at the end of the month. No set in stone date. In the last few days before September. 8mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView Okay. Thank you! 8mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView I know you‘ve tagged me for Project Hail Mary, but I wanted to make sure that I‘ll be tagged on A Big Ship… for the discussion. Please. I was able to check the audiobook out of the library via Libby and I want to dive right in. 8mo
TheSpineView @CatLass007 I added your name to my list of Littens to tag. Therefore, you will be tagged on ALL group posts going forward unless you ask me to stop. This includes the discussion at the end of August. 8mo
CatLass007 @TheSpineView That‘s great! I suspected that was the case but I wanted to make sure. I appreciate your patience with me and the hard work you do to host this book club. 8mo

Ryland Grace wakes up out of a coma with amnesia to find himself approaching Tau Ceti. As his memory comes back in bits and pieces he remembers that he is on a mission to save the human race.

I really enjoyed this story, following Grace as he works out the nature of the problem, and seeks a solution. The author does a great job of showing how he arrives at a solution rather than just presenting the answer. All the stars.

Not my typical genre so probably a me problem over the book but I drifted too much while listening to this. There were times I almost bailed but some chapters ended in a way I had to keep on which I‘m glad I did as it was a good listen overall - it just took me a while to get past the first person narrative; I felt like I was being taught which sometimes took me out of the story. When both your husband and bestie love a book, you boost it to the top of your TBR and hope you love it too.

And I did. It was quite a ride, emotionally and galactically.

LadyCait84 @LoverOfLearning I also loved The Martian! I think it‘s because he balances the sci-fi elements with character(s) that feel so ordinary and endearing? For both The Martian and this one, the protagonists — despite being super nerds in out-of-this-world situations — quickly become people I feel like I know and care about. (edited) 11mo

This was my most recent #couplebookclub read with my (now!) husband. At first I found the main character‘s teacher-speak quite annoying (I know a lot of teachers and most don‘t use the same language with their students as other adults), but the way the story unravels is quite clever and really keeps the pages turning wanting to know what would happen next. The science is mostly accessible and you really grow to care for the two MCs. 4.5 💫

This author is a one-hit wonder for me. I loved The Martian but this book and the one before I couldn't get past the clumsy writing and bad stereotypes. Project Hail Mary is first person w/exhaustive internal narrative exposition on the science. It felt more like "look how smart I am!" than any added benefit to the reader. It would have been more relatable if the author accepted that the reader trusts him and got on with the storytelling instead.

This one is a bit of a ham, both in size and execution. There are parts that are really good and gripping, but plenty that reads like a grade eight science project; (review continues in comments)

Creadnorthey a protagonist skill set that defies even this Speculative Fiction, moments where I, as a science neophyte, said why do that and not this, plenty of America is greater even while part of the international team, and a frat-boy narrative voice that screams cast me using the hippest up-and-coming actor in the movie version. Possibly my favourite free audiobook of the month ever.
I do have a penchant for the occasional science fiction novel - possibly influenced by my husband who reads little else.
The premise of this book was interesting, particularly the way Weir imagined the meeting of two alien species, their differences and similarities and their growing methods of communication. Quite thought provoking material.

This book has been on my TBR shelf for awhile now and it did not disappoint. Funny enough the most sci-fi thing in this text was humanity actually cooperating to solve a problem (ugh I hate how cynical I have become) 🙄 However, not surprising was the fact that humanity was saved by a teacher of all things. Rocky and Grace‘s friendship was the best!

I had to shut my brain off and go with the flow on this one. Without spoiling it I thought the parts in space were much better than the parts on Earth. But the ending was fabulous so I give it a pick. #MarvellousMay book 3/6

Follow.my.read Loved this book! 2y
DogMomIrene Alright, you‘ve convinced me. I‘m going to give this one a try. I loved The Martian and did not care for Artemis. I know some people don‘t like the sciencey parts, but I liked those in The Martian. 2y
Bookwormjillk @DogMomIrene I loved the Martian, and have read it multiple times. I bailed on Artemis. This one is worth a try! 2y

This was a struggle. Almost didn't finish, but even though I had a hard time following all the "sciency " stuff...I had to know the ending.
If you're a space enthusiast or love science and math thrown into the books you read...this books for you. Just not for me.
