Tropic of Cancer | Henry Miller
72 posts | 63 read | 55 to read
Shocking, banned and the subject of obscenity trials, Henry Miller's first novel Tropic of Cancer is one of the most scandalous and influential books of the twentieth centuryTropic of Cancer redefined the novel. Set in Paris in the 1930s, it features a starving American writer who lives a bohemian life among prostitutes, pimps, and artists. Banned in the US and the UK for more than thirty years because it was considered pornographic, Tropic of Cancer continued to be distributed in France and smuggled into other countries. When it was first published in the US in 1961, it led to more than 60 obscenity trials until a historic ruling by the Supreme Court defined it as a work of literature. Long hailed as a truly liberating book, daring and uncompromising, Tropic of Cancer is a cornerstone of modern literature that asks us to reconsider everything we know about art, freedom, and morality.'At last an unprintable book that is fit to read' Ezra Pound 'A momentous event in the history of modern writing' Samuel Beckett 'The book that forever changed the way American literature would be written' Erica Jong Henry Miller (1891-1980) is one of the most important American writers of the 20th century. His best-known novels include Tropic of Cancer (1934), Tropic of Capricorn (1939), and the Rosy Crucifixion trilogy (Sexus, 1949, Plexus, 1953, and Nexus, 1959), all published in France and banned in the US and the UK until 1964. He is widely recognised as an irreverent, risk-taking writer who redefined the novel and made the link between the European avant-garde and the American Beat generation.

I love me a dirty banned book! For once, I can actually see why the censors kicked up such a fuss - there is a LOT of filth. That said, Miller wrote more about food than he did sex (understandable, given that he was literally a starving artist at the time of writing). Tropic of Cancer isn't stream-of-consciousness, but it's something adjacent to it. Full review: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/tropic-of-cancer-henry-miller/ #BannedBooks

I can understand why, at the time, this was controversial and I can see why it‘s an important book. However. It did nothing for me. It was too crass for the sake of being “avant- garde” for me.

I am going to #sing for you, a little off key perhaps, but I will sing. I will sing while you croak, I will dance over your dirty corpse....
To sing you must first open your mouth. You must have a pair of lungs, and a little knowledge of music. It is not necessary to have an accordion, or a guitar. The essential thing is to want to sing. This then is a song. I am singing.

I almost never abandon a book - I can't remember the last time I did it, but this? I can't seem to find a plot, nor any likeable characters. I don't mind the writing style - it reminds me of someone but I can't remember who. And some of the descriptions - I don't think I'm a prude but they made me physically nauseous. Read something else.

Giving this a so-so. While I disliked most of it, and rage read good portions of it, the writing is brilliant and breathtaking at times and does represent a breakthrough in literary history. But it is also deeply misogynist and racist in a way that can't simply be written off as 'the times.' It's been compared to Whitman but to me it's the antithesis —so preoccupied with darkness, death and decay. Whitman inspires me. This is just depressing.

PurpleyPumpkin Ugh, yes, depressing. Great review!👍🏼 3y

This was a rough read for me for a couple of reasons:
1. Stream of consciousness writing is not my cup of tea,
2. I like to have a plot/storyline and there was none and
3. The sexism and racism really bothered me.

The only reason why I finished the book was because every now and then the literary brilliance shone through.

I read it faster than it was planned for the read along, because I just wanted to get it over with! 😬

#TOC

BarbaraTheBibliophage I have to agree with all three of your points. I'm behind my goals and it just doesn't bother me! 😜 3y

PurpleyPumpkin @BarbaraTheBibliophage Nope, definitely not just you! I'm gonna finish this if it kills me because I know I'm unlikely to revisit it in future. You all have inspired me to get through this! 3y
KVanRead @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes, I have definitely thought that more than once. Makes me glad we are all ploughing through together. Solidarity! 😂 I have not found the introduction that helpful. Mine anyway, by Karl Shapiro is just a tad hyperbolic and seems more of an apology/defense of Miller in general than an intro to a specific book. He does bring up Whitman and Miller being more like a poet which I see...also Joyce, Lawrence, Thoreau. For me... 3y
KVanRead he feels more like Thoreau - have yet to tackle Joyce and way too long since I read Lawrence. I love Whitman and his 'earthiness' is just so much more palatable to me 😊 3y

We are well into week 2 of our slow read for the #ToCreadalong and I'm just getting started! In preparation for reading this banned book, I did a little research into the novel's background. I didn't realize, but this is an autobiographical novel, a story of sorts, about Henry Miller himself. Of the little I've read so far, he certainly led an interesting life! #TOC #bannedbookchallenge #bannedbookreadathon #bannedbookreading #TOCreadathon

BarbaraTheBibliophage LOL. Interesting to say the least! His perspective on so many social issues is definitely old school, but sadly still in evidence today. I'm behind now too. I need to read this week's portion! 3y
Kathrin @BarbaraTheBibliophage Old school is a very nice way to put it... archaic was the word on my mind today while reading. 😆 But you are right, these sentiments are still around. 3y

PurpleyPumpkin @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Kathrin It definitely seems to be a book of it's time. It's jarring at times, but I'm finding it intriguing. Well, so far anyway. We'll see! 3y
KVanRead @PurpleyPumpkin @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Kathrin I'm just starting this week's portion. So far my reactions are all over the place. Sometimes I find the writing just bombastic, other times beautiful. So far he is either blowing me away with his writing or blowing me away with his anti-semitism and sexism. Is anyone else finding this particularly hard to take given our current political news? 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @KVanRead I feel the same way. Miller's racism and sexism are horrible. I'd definitely be less disturbed if the news wasn't full of the election coverage. 3y
Kathrin @KVanRead I agree. I find the reason for banning the book in the first place ridiculous and the half pornographic content is nothing compared to the sexism. But back in the day, writing porn was worse than objectifying women... well sometimes it feels like nothing has changed. 🤔 3y
KVanRead @kathrin @BarbaraTheBibliophage well I guess that's progress 😊 Although judging from recent reactions in the news It see some are still more bothered by 'lewdness' than misogyny😞 3y

Tropic of Cancer is a brutally-honest, self-indulgent, and highly original book. A candid look inside this brilliant author‘s mind and life as a writer roaming Paris. Henry Miller‘s prose could take you from the reality of being a penniless artist to the depths of his own lustrous desires. This is classic literature at its finest. Miller at its finest–provocative, bold, straight, ingenuous, misogynistic, and original.

Griffin Dunne reading "Tropic of Cancer" in "After Hours," my favorite Scorsese movie. He says to Patricia Arquette, "I've read this before. I mean, I'm just rereading it. I don't reread books that often but this one's my favorite." This was possibly my first introduction to the novel as a teenager. That is also the exact same paperback edition of the book that I read!

Finally caught up on the reading for this week. So far I have moments of admiration and the moments of desperation for the writing.

How is everyone else doing??

BarbaraTheBibliophage I'm just getting some more time to read. Been so beyond busy (plus sick) this week. I will be caught up just in time to be behind again! So far, I'm just about as mixed about his writing as you are. 😜 3y
gibblr I'm going by chapters since I have the kindle version. I finished the first three last weekend and have not had a chance to move past that. Some of it is slow going, and I hope I don't have trouble jumping back in. I have too many books going right now! 3y
PurpleyPumpkin I FINALLY got my hands on the book today! I'll get to work on it tomorrow and try to catch up. I've been enjoying all the posts, but I must say, it's made me a tad nervous about starting. 😳 3y
katedensen Similar reaction over here! 3y
KVanRead Just caught up to that exact quote and having a similar reaction. This quote is a great example. I love the writing here, but totally disagree with the sentiment. Other times the writing has driven me nuts but I find the ideas interesting. I'm really all over the place with it so far but feel it's worth sticking with. 3y

It's been a long day (a long week, really), and I'm finally in bed with my book. Very much enjoying the #ToCreadalong. I've been taking some notes about various allusions and non-English words. Would anyone be interested in looking at them if I put them in some sort of Google doc or on my website? #TOC #bannedbookchallenge #bannedbookreadathon #bannedbookreading #ToCreadathon

BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes I'd love to see them! 📚📚👏🏻👏🏻 3y
PurpleyPumpkin That's a great idea! I'd love to see them too. 👍🏼 3y

The story is extremely confusing right now, but there are some real 💎 gems here. To be really honest, I find the crude statements almost hilarious which is probably witness to what we are exposed to these days.

brendanmleonard This looks like a fun project - good luck, guys! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Good quote! I've been using Google translate a fair amount while reading. 3y

Chrys I will admit to finding a fair bit of humor in those statements as well 3y
katedensen I think this book could use an annotated version. I've been looking a bunch of stuff up -- would anyone be interested if I put it in a google doc or something? 3y
Kathrin @katedfisher That would be very helpgul.... most of the time I am too lazy to look things up... 3y
gibblr I'm with @Kathrin - I haven't looked anything up I don't think. I'm not that invested and can usually get around it! 3y
KVanRead @katedfisher That would be cool. I had the exact same thought about an annotated version. I haven't wanted to interrupt the stream of consciousness flow by looking stuff up while reading, but would love to do so afterwards. 3y

Well, I need to think what I feel about the story. This book left me in total confusion. Apparently, both of us have to think 🤔

I am a couple of pages beyond the preface now... it's not the book right now, it's my work schedule and the other books that I am reading right now... I'll catch up later in the week - hopefully.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I thought the Preface was interesting, as Miller and Nin were romantically involved. 🤔 3y

Mehso-so

Banned for thirty years, pointless, with an unbearable bum of a narrator. AND YET, there's a lot of poetry here and the occasional shock of profundity.

To those doing the #tocreadalong: it -does- get a little better the more you read.

keepingupwiththepenguins “Unbearable bum“ = 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 2mo
twohectobooks @keepingupwiththepenguins I forgot that‘s what I called him! I agree with my past self though lol 2mo

There's a lot of yuck and crazy about this book. But just when I get disgusted, Miller throws in something like this. Paris as pain.

teainthelibrary I wrote my senior thesis on this book. Such an amazing and frustrating book! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @teainthelibrary Wow - what a thesis topic. I can't imagine and I'm only 20 pages in so far. Hope you follow our hashtags and join in the discussion. 3y
katedensen Yes! I'm on p. 23 and the juxtaposition of the shocking perversity with beautiful writing is remarkable. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @katedfisher If it wasn't for the beautiful writing, I'd be a whole lot more likely to bail. Must press on! 3y
