What an interesting question! I seem to be saying this very often, Elena Greco-, Lyra Belacqua and Elizabeth Benett. My husband's is any of Henry Miller's alter egos in his books, he admires his freedom! I think he just admires his exploits 😂😀

Day Six:
This book was banned in the United States for 27 years after it was first published in Paris in 1934. It's extremely sexually graphic and is the story (part memoir/part fiction) of a young writer and his friends in Paris and all the shenanigans that ensue.
These are #bannedbooksihaventread but I really want to read the tagged book for sure. I want to see what all the fuss was about because the obscenity trials went all the way to the Supreme Court. That seems so crazy to me! 😯

I‘m in 🙋🏻♀️
I‘ve (pretty much) finished all my other challenges for the year (except #MtTBR), and June is my bday month, so why not? I can definitely get 6 done - maybe double that 💁🏻♀️
@Clwojick @Meaw_catlady
I was googling #ObnoxiousCharacter and found a website that suggested “any character by Henry Miller”😂 I‘ve only read the autobiographical Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, and to be fair, Miller himself came across as a bit obnoxious.
#AuldLangReads @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620
I love me a dirty banned book! For once, I can actually see why the censors kicked up such a fuss - there is a LOT of filth. That said, Miller wrote more about food than he did sex (understandable, given that he was literally a starving artist at the time of writing). Tropic of Cancer isn't stream-of-consciousness, but it's something adjacent to it. Full review: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/tropic-of-cancer-henry-miller/ #BannedBooks
I can understand why, at the time, this was controversial and I can see why it‘s an important book. However. It did nothing for me. It was too crass for the sake of being “avant- garde” for me.
This mornings sunrise at work.
@merelybookish Your post about the library book reminded me of 2 things.Seinfeld Season 3 Episode 5 where the Library has no record of Jerry returning a book he checked out in 1971 😃& this list from Mental Floss http://mentalfloss.com/article/55621/11-ridiculously-overdue-library-books-were-...
Morning reading.
Been on my shelf for years. Finally time.
In his pocket scraps of paper containing prescriptions for Weltschmerz.
I have no money, no resources, no hopes. I am the happiest man alive. -Henry Miller
I am going to #sing for you, a little off key perhaps, but I will sing. I will sing while you croak, I will dance over your dirty corpse....
To sing you must first open your mouth. You must have a pair of lungs, and a little knowledge of music. It is not necessary to have an accordion, or a guitar. The essential thing is to want to sing. This then is a song. I am singing.

Kicking Off Banned Book Week!
"To have her here in bed with me, breathing on me, her hair in my mouth—I count that something of a miracle."

Christian: "I was in London with my friends, in this record store called Rough Trade, and saw this book in the sex section, which makes sense. The main character is having a lot of sex. The way Miller writes feels like you're running through a whirlwind of thoughts – it's really fun." / Full review on Instagram @SubwayBookReview
Everybody says sex is obscene. The only true obscenity is war.
Just reading bits from these makes me want to read them again! I know a few people that don't like how explicit his writing is but he's a great writer, one of my favourites! #controversial #jubilantjuly
A little bit of #bookishmail on this otherwise uneventful Tuesday. Thank you @LibrarianRyan - I love the little fact about the Icelandic postal service 😄
#Balthazar says these books are too #graphic for his taste. #sizzlinsummerbooks @Tiffy_Reads
I almost never abandon a book - I can't remember the last time I did it, but this? I can't seem to find a plot, nor any likeable characters. I don't mind the writing style - it reminds me of someone but I can't remember who. And some of the descriptions - I don't think I'm a prude but they made me physically nauseous. Read something else.
The remaining four books on my current #tenatatime TBR are my #24in48 readathon books. I'm also hoping I can finish my current read in the next two hours so that I can start fresh! Looking forward to this!
I'm reading this for the first time. It's been on my TBR pile for way too long.
I recently posted this, but had to post again for today's #dnf prompt. It is the only book I have ever bailed on! I hate not finishing a book. But I think I have to get better at it. Life is too short. #day11 #readjanuary
I wish I could finish this. I've been trying to get through this for months, but I can no longer persevere. It's killing me, but I'm gonna bail on this one. And I doubt that I'll ever come back to it. Poop!
Giving this a so-so. While I disliked most of it, and rage read good portions of it, the writing is brilliant and breathtaking at times and does represent a breakthrough in literary history. But it is also deeply misogynist and racist in a way that can't simply be written off as 'the times.' It's been compared to Whitman but to me it's the antithesis —so preoccupied with darkness, death and decay. Whitman inspires me. This is just depressing.
2.5 stars Have you ever known a twenty-something young man who arrogantly believes he knows everything about everything? This is 319 pages of that guy, mostly while he's drunk or high. It's just a whiny bigoted blog, albeit with moments of brilliance.

Well, this isn't exactly a #bookandbrew, but my rye & soda with a splash of ginger ale is my go-to drink at the end of a long work day. This is my current read and it's making me cranky! I'm aiming to finish it by the weekend. *fingers crossed* #TOC #TOCreadathon

People are like lice - they get under your skin and bury themselves there. You scratch and scratch until the blood comes, but you can't get permanently deloused.
This quote really smacks of coy self-promotion and apologia to me because quite frankly I'm not sure there's one cohesive page of greatness in this book. There are lots of snippets of brilliance but the bloated, self-important sewage you have to wade through for it is enough to make me want to punch the self-indulgent, superior misogynist right in the kisser! Still glad I'm reading it, but rage reading it half the time.😂 #TOCReadalong
I finally don't hate this book. Not that I love it, but I've settled into his odd cadence of non-story telling writing. Still struggling with his incredible bigoted nature though. Almost caught up too.

Today's plan. Couch. And 80 pages from our #tocreadalong book! I can do it, right? 😜 #toc #tropicofcancer
Just a bit vulgar for my tastes and racey for the time period it was written.

😂😂😂This is probably my favorite part of this crazy book so far. Weirdly, I find it to be the most profound and the funniest bit I've read. Miller's unabashed embrace of the sh*t of life, both figurative and literal is pretty off-putting most of the time, but here it works! #TOC #TOCreadalong #bannedbookchallenge @Kathrin @BarbaraTheBibliophage @PurpleyPumpkin @gibblr @katedfisher
This was a rough read for me for a couple of reasons:
1. Stream of consciousness writing is not my cup of tea,
2. I like to have a plot/storyline and there was none and
3. The sexism and racism really bothered me.
The only reason why I finished the book was because every now and then the literary brilliance shone through.
I read it faster than it was planned for the read along, because I just wanted to get it over with! 😬

Is anybody else bothered by the lack of a storyline??
I'm trying to stay on top of our weekly #ToCReadalong schedule! Our hero doesn't have much to eat, so I've chosen cinnamon sugar buttered rice cakes and delicious water for my #readingsnacks. 😜 #booktober
We are well into week 2 of our slow read for the #ToCreadalong and I'm just getting started! In preparation for reading this banned book, I did a little research into the novel's background. I didn't realize, but this is an autobiographical novel, a story of sorts, about Henry Miller himself. Of the little I've read so far, he certainly led an interesting life! #TOC #bannedbookchallenge #bannedbookreadathon #bannedbookreading #TOCreadathon
