Beezus and Ramona (Reillustrated)
Beezus and Ramona (Reillustrated) | Beverly Cleary
100 posts | 272 read | 18 to read
Ramona Quimby is the youngest of all the famous characters in Mrs. Cleary's wonderful Henry Huggins stories. She is also far and away the most deadly. Readers of the earlier books will remember that Ramona has always been a menace to Beezus, her older sister, to Henry, and to his dog Ribsy. It is not that Ramona deliberately sets out to make trouble for other people. She simply has more imagination than is healthy for any one person.

This is a cute book that focuses on a sibling relationship. I related to this book so much when reading about the jealousy and annoyance the siblings were feeling. Despite the fighting these sisters clearly have love for each other. This is a sweet and humorous book that anyone with siblings can relate to.

Ramona is a terror and Beezus is kind of annoying, but it‘s all believable. My mom read the series to us as kids, and she read this with my kid via Skype in summer 2020, but I think this is my first time reading it myself. A lot of family sayings came from this (“is the witch done yet?” was a big one), and now I know that!

Dragon My younger sister was a big Ramona fan 💚🐉 3y

Very nostalgic as I must have read this over a dozen times as a kid. How could I forget the story was told from Beezus‘s POV? And just like Ramona did in the story and as a little sister is apt to do, she goes on and makes herself the focus not only in this book but the rest of the series. Lol🤣 Some of my earliest reading memories are of this series. ❤️

What a funny book about two sisters! I know my younger daughter loved books about Ramona. Luckily she didn‘t get into as much trouble, but her older sister probably still thought she was a pest! I was a Ramona, sower of chaos and imagination, as a child, but I had no Beezus to keep me in check. I loved these books back then. I also loved the 80s TV series with Sarah Polley as Ramona. ⬆️ (She later showed up in one of my favorite 90s movies, Go.) I may have to get audible‘s set of the Ramona books. Stockard Channing does an excellent job narrating the #audiobook.

A lovely bedtime story!

1. I played soccer in kindergarten, rugby for a bit in college, and I'm an occasional runner and cyclist. I don't follow sports but I come from a family of amateur boxers and football players and my spouse and his family of origin are big football fans, so those sports continue to be part of my life despite my misgivings about them.

ImperfectCJ @SheReadsAndWrites I'm more of a Beezus myself. :-) As a kid I loved the books, but as a parent I am just wowed at Cleary's ability to reflect a child's world. Things that seem tiny to adults but are Earth-shaking to children...Cleary really gets it. 4y
SheReadsAndWrites I totally agree. I have a friend who writes middle-grade fiction and it boggles my mind how well she can get into the head of a kid that age. It's a gift, truly. 4y

I love that I have only just discovered this series, so they are new for both Beatrix and me, rather than something I have already read to Polly. I am amazed at how naughty Ramona is. I can see Beatrix thinking about it and wondering whether Polly sometimes feels the same way about her as Beezus feels about Ramona (their age difference is similar). I have already ordered the next three in the series to go on with.

This RF novel focuses on 9-year-old Ramona as she has trouble with getting along with younger sister, Beezus. She finds her very annoying. This would be a fun book for SR and would keep students engaged. One UDL & EL strategy is activate or supply background knowledge (3.1) & 34. De-emphasize speed and emphasize accuracy of work.
