Throne of Glass
Throne of Glass | Sarah J Maas
In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien. The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.49-51: Wow, what an intense duel between Cain and Celaena (and Nehemia and Elena vs demons). In the aftermath Nehemia tells Celaena her secrets (she‘s super badass) and it is alluded to again that Celaena has magic in her blood. Dorian stands up a bit to his father and Chaol won‘t be punished for killing Cain, even though Cain was acting out what the king wanted. ⬇️

StayCurious Kaltain got the shaft and will probably be killed or imprisoned. I feel a bit bad considering she was used by Perrington. Here‘s hoping the duke gets his later on. We‘re almost finished the first book - we‘ll read the rest tomorrow! 2h
Laughterhp I finished the book last night! I‘m glad Choal stepped in and saved Caelena. 2h

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.46-48: Wow I‘m so outraged on Celaena‘s behalf! We knew Perrington and Kaltain had arranged to drug her during the duel but to think that they actually pulled it off…so many emotions right now. How will she pull through and how can she prove what they did? Really tense chapters as we near the end.

mcctrish I just want to say I‘m proud of me for not reading ahead because this is INTENSE 14h
Laughterhp I read ahead. 🫣 but mostly because my kindle has been on airplane mode because my hold expired 2 weeks ago for this book and I want to turn it off lol. However, I‘m so mad they actually poisoned her and she didn‘t expect anything! Why did she drink anything Kaltain gave her?! 13h
BarkingMadRead @Laughterhp I finished days ago 🙈 I was so mad that they poisoned her, wt actual f?!? 12h
LiseWorks I was proud of myself for not reading ahead. The fight was so intense that I was wincing with every blow. And how come Cain was saying all those nasty things about and to her. 6h

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.43-45: I‘m glad Celaena told Nehemia about who she is but was surprised she didn‘t rat out Cain. Why keep it to herself? Chaol at least should know, even if she told him in a roundabout way. The King is back - and super secretive. What the heck happened that everyone he was with died?! I hope we find out and it isn‘t just brushed under the rug. More smooches with Dorian - but we don‘t really know how she feels⬇️

StayCurious I‘m annoyed that the tests keep getting glossed over or canceled. You could have some very interesting scenes with the champions. Now we‘re already on to the duel and I know nothing about the other two that made it besides Cain. 2d
mcctrish Is Celeana sensing the same darkness around the king as Cain or is that just her negative feelings ? 2d

5feet.of.fury @StayCurious I‘ve never seen a fantasy book with trials show so little of them, and we knew very little of most of the other contestants. V strange 2d
5feet.of.fury I‘m glad Celaena somewhat confided somewhat in Nehemiah and Nox, but I not telling anyone about Cain… risky 2d
Laughterhp Seriously. What was the point of even pretending there would be tests. Or why have so many characters if you weren‘t going to talk about them? 2d
Roary47 I agree that I would have liked to read more about the trials, and other characters. I‘m also glad that she was able to get Nox out of there. What happened to the poisons guy? Was he eliminated or killed? I‘m hoping the next chapters will help answer some questions. 2d
StayCurious @Roary47 Pelor was eliminated if I recall correctly- not killed. But did he have to return to his prison? Or wherever he came from? Cause that sucks 2d
LiseWorks Do you guys think maybe the king is being used by some magician? 2d
Roary47 @LiseWorks That is an interesting thought. I know K is always under the influence of something. I feel there is more of a story there too. 2d

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.40-42: That was intense! Celaena not only discovers who is behind the Champion killings, she defeats the evil creature! Thank goodness she had explored the tomb earlier. Interesting how when she was thinking of being killed, she thought of Nehemia and Chaol but not Dorian. That tells us something for sure. And now she‘s been poisoned by the creature‘s bite and has a different fight ahead of her. Will Nehemia save her?

BarkingMadRead So stressful!! And so badass 3d

Roary47 I like how she protected Fleetfoot when she discovered what she was up against. I still feel like Cain is a puppet, and not the real mastermind. I‘m sorry for doubting you Nehemia please save her. 😭 3d
LiseWorks It's the Pen guy, the one Kartlain hates. He is the magician with the ring. 3d
5feet.of.fury We‘re almost at the end of these Tests and we‘ve barely heard anything about them. 2d

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.37-39: Nothing happened at the Yule ball-except dancing and romance and a love 🔺 getting more complicated. Celaena was expecting something to go down - perhaps Nehemia didn‘t strike because she didn‘t want to hurt her friend - Celaena was not supposed to be there. Or Nehemia is innocent 🤷‍♀️ I believe Perrington is up to no good - of course. And something is up with Kaltain. Time for some answers to this mystery!

BarkingMadRead So many mysteries! Also. I‘m #teamchaol 4d
mcctrish Is Nehemia really unwell ( like Kaltain) or faking to get away? Why are the other champions invited and not Celeana? Is it really that they are afraid of her? #teamchaolforever 4d

5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRead @mcctrish yessss Team Chaol. Excited to see why Nehemiah has been holding back how much she knows to Celaena 😬 I‘m thinking the sickness is something to do with the summonings. 4d

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.34-36: so we‘re down to 5 Champions and most of them have been gruesomely killed - but I feel as though that has been glossed over. Each death is just mentioned in passing. And while Celaena is worried, I feel as though there should be a bit more being done around the castle. Maybe having a masked ball isn‘t the best idea. ⬇️

StayCurious As Celaena mentions- it would make a good place to unleash the beast. Do we think it is Nehemia behind the killings? She is acting strangely. 5d
mcctrish Despite reading this before I remember nothing - Nehemia is acting strangely and has been using Celeana AND she knows what wyrdmarks are/mean. I can‘t believe she‘s behind the gruesome disemboweling. I think the weird black rings are so Perrington/Cain are somehow. Or it‘s the King somehow. Today is my last day of school so maybe I will just read to the end 😆 5d

LiseWorks I was surprised by Nehemiah. I didn't expect thar at all. I'm starting to like the prince. 5d
Roary47 Like @mcctrish I‘ve read this and I remember nothing about what happened. Nehemia is definitely hiding something, but until her people were slaughtered did she really have that much of a vengeance? It seems this king is on the bad side of a lot of neighboring communities so it could be anyone. I also am starting to like the prince @LiseWorks I mean he gave her a puppy! 🐶😍 He‘s so awkward around her it‘s so cute. 🥰💛 (edited) 5d

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Ch.31-33: we are reminded that Nehemiah‘s people are still at war, some still rebelling against Adarlan‘s forces. Is that where the king is? Enforcing his rule? I was a bit surprised that Pelor helped Celaena in the poison challenge - he‘s mostly kept to himself up to now. But it‘s good to have allies. Even if they may have to face each other at the end.

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.28-30: first - Celaena getting frustrated when she‘s not immediately good at something is funny. Second, she‘s certainly been spending a lot of time with Dorian. I doubt much can come of it - not if his parents have anything to say about it. Does he find her interesting simply because he‘s not supposed to? ⬇️

StayCurious Also our Champions are falling like flies. Pretty soon Cain or Celaena will be all that‘s left. My instincts are that it‘s Perrington but that‘s the easy answer. What if it‘s Pelor? How else is he supposed to win? That‘s my guess. 7d
Roary47 The pool scene was definitely cute. Even though I already read it I don‘t remember what was happening with the champions. I‘m excited to be blown away so not trying to guess. 😅 7d

mcctrish Perrington is a problem! Chaol is onto something watching him and his weirdness also Kaltain is involved somehow with the headaches - 7d
BarkingMadRead Perrington is definitely suspicious, as is Cain 7d
5feet.of.fury Celaena medical examiner didn‘t make the most sense to me. There‘s no blood because the creature sharpened its claws? What? But in any event my prime suspect in the murders is Kaltain 7d
LiseWorks @5feet.of.fury I think the creature sharpened his claws on the floor or wall before he attacked. Therefore, there was no blood where the claw marks were on the floor. 7d
5feet.of.fury @LiseWorks thank you! That makes way more sense 😂 7d
Laughterhp I think everyone is up to no good. I suspect everyone! Kaltain‘s headaches are suspect too lol. And what‘s with Perrington and the ring now? 7d
StayCurious @5feet.of.fury I was thinking - hmm this would make a fun tv show - “from Assassin to Criminal Investigator…” yeah it didn‘t make much sense but it was interesting and told the reader more about this killer 7d
StayCurious @Laughterhp do we think the headaches have to do with her pipe? Or is she under the control of someone? Does she do bad things and then forget about them? 7d

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.25-27: Hmm, Celaena gets a visit from a long lost queen and receives cryptic warnings and missives and a protection necklace. Better not let anyone know about the secret chamber with the tomb - and stop asking everyone about the Wyrdmarks - you‘ll paint a target on your back. If the King finds out what she‘s up to she‘s cooked. There are 16 Champions left. And still more tests to come. ⬇️

StayCurious Focus on surviving and becoming the Champion. Leave the investigating to Chaol. Of course that would make for a dull book - and I realize that Celaena is not one to stay by the sidelines. 1w

5feet.of.fury @mcctrish yesss what does Nehemia know about the way the Champion was killed?? 1w

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.22-24: ooh - a secret passage! I love me a secret passage! And now Celaena has an escape route if she needs one. I was miffed though when she saw that most of the champions got to go to the feast and she was excluded. Unfair! What do we think those symbols mean around the clock tower? And why was Cain looking at one? I think it has something to do with his ring. And Nehemia knows much more than she‘s letting on.

mcctrish I am so mad all the ‘champions‘ get to go except Celeana ( Cain doesn‘t count cuz something is seriously up with him, he‘s probably plugged into a power source somewhere like a machine ) I‘m excited about secret passageways and are the symbols runes like in 4th Wing? and for sure they have something to do with Cain and his sponsor 1w
BarkingMadRead Ok, I was really steamed that she didn‘t get to go and everyone else did. Plus she can‘t even bitch about it, because of how she knows! 1w
See All 10 Comments
Roary47 I didn‘t like that she couldn‘t go either, but think the ring she was provided was pretty sweet. I‘m also glad she saved Nox and neither of them were eliminated because of this.. only because the other guy died though. How many champions are left? I‘m losing track. 1w
5feet.of.fury Oh boys 1w
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 I think 19? I believe it said she came in 18th but Nox was after her 1w
Read4life I think 19 is correct. I was annoyed that she wasn‘t at the celebration, too. I hope I‘m wrong, but I‘m beginning to question Nehemia and her motives. (edited) 1w
Butterfinger I am all twisted. Something about the runes or markings made Nehemia question Celaena. Was magic involved? Like in the woods? Is Cain there to protect her-like Snape? Are the tunnels used to take the Champions elsewhere to kill them? Is a wild animal there to hunt? She calls Chaol "friend," but he still treats her as a low class person. I need answers. 1w
LiseWorks I was so mystified by Nehemia reaction to her. Like what did she notice about her face. Diesnshe know whonshe really is? 1w
Laughterhp @LiseWorks Same! I had to reread to see if I missed something! 1w

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.19-21: as we approach the second test, Celaena reflects on her loss of Sam, an assassin she grew up with and loved. Dorian sees her as human and feels sorry for her. I wonder who betrayed Celaena and Sam? I feel as though it was their mentor…but I usually expect the worst. ⬇️

StayCurious We get to the test and it‘s a dangerous wall scaling trial - Nox gets in trouble and Celaena goes to save him - taking her away from the flag and potentially causing her to lose the game. But we see that‘s who she is - she can‘t stand still when something unfair is happening. Will it cost her her life and freedom? 1w

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.16-18: we‘re reminded of the seriousness of the competition when a champion tries to escape and is slaughtered in front of everyone. They are not the king‘s guests-best not to forget it. And even though Celaena may seem to be making connections- with Chaol, Dorian, and perhaps Nox, she really can‘t trust anyone. Except maybe Nehemiah. I wonder what her story is.

BarkingMadRead I hope C and N become besties, I think they‘re good for each other 2w

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.13-15: hmm a simple archery contest as the first test? I feel like they‘re lulling the competitors into a false sense of security. Or maybe going easy on them simply because one of them was just murdered. Something is going on. It has to do with the King‘s secrecy and with the dead hounds I‘ll bet. Perhaps there is a predator - man or beast - within Adarlan. ⬇️

StayCurious Maybe that‘s why the king feels he needs a champion in the first place. Whatever it is - things are getting more tense. 2w
BarkingMadRead This was so crazy, and I‘m hoping that C gets to hang with the princess. Seems like a long shot though. And archery?!? So lame. But I‘m dying to know what is killing the dogs 😢 2w

mcctrish Twice the black stone ring on Cain‘s finger has been mentioned - is it magic ? Does he get strength from it ? 2w
StayCurious @mcctrish yeah I thought of a magic ring as well - it‘s unlikely to be a wedding ring haha 2w
5feet.of.fury Loved her inability to play it cool for this one, wonder how much attention she attracted with the bullseyes. What‘s killing the dogs? And what happened to the Eye Eater ? 2w
LiseWorks Oh, I would have done the same with the archery, I just couldn't help myself having done archery in high school. Lots of questions here, the ring, the murder, the princess. 2w
Roary47 I like that she made some connections in these chapters. Interesting how many of us mentioned the eye eater when he was mentioned and he ends up dead. I‘m wondering if Nox really needed help with throwing or he is just trying to lay low like she is supposed to. 2w
Butterfinger A lot happened here. Possible allies with Nox and the Princess. I just can't think she is a cold-blooded killer. Even with her imagining ways to kill Cain, would she kill him from anger or resentment? I think she shows more restraint because she shows empathy for the peasants, Pelor, and she still feels guilty for leaving her fellow prisoners behind. She is a fun character. 2w

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.10-12: how hard must it be for Celaena to do the training when she‘s been in the mines for a year!? It‘s hard to run when you‘re malnourished. But she kept up - good for her. And she remembers how to use a sword. I think the strategy they‘re using of keeping her under the radar is good - but I‘d be annoyed too if I were her. ⬇️

StayCurious They‘re just dismissing her as a nobody! I think the looks on their faces when she beats them will be priceless. She just has to stick to the game plan. 2w
mcctrish I think the plan works two ways ( Chaol is a smartie) they won‘t see her coming and she gets time to build up her strength and reassess her first impressions. I am wondering if that one dark haired competitor recognizes her 2w

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1 Ch.7-9: it‘s great that Celaena is not only a top assassin- but an avid reader too. I love characters who are book lovers. It makes them so relatable to me. Being in the castle, there will be a lot of court intrigue - we already see a big rift between the prince and the king, and I‘m guessing - since Dorian looks nothing like his father - maybe his parentage has been questioned at some point? ⬇️

StayCurious It‘s obvious his horrible brother is the king‘s son. There‘s also strain with the Duke of Perrington which I‘m sure will cause trouble. I love games of chess like these. Here‘s hoping Celaena can keep up as a player. 2w
mcctrish I‘m always thrilled when a character is a reader too - reading about readers brings me joy! Trouble in the royal family, bring on the drama 2w

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1:Ch.4-6: we‘re learning more about the world and the destruction that Adarlan‘s king has inflicted-especially on magic wielders. It‘s mentioned that Celaena once possessed gifts but that magic disappeared from the land. We also learn a bit about the King of Assassins- her mentor who trained her. And there is someone that she suspects betrayed her and that led to her capture. Someone close to her. ⬇️

StayCurious Could it have been her mentor? What would his motive have been? Celaena just wants her freedom and to disappear- she‘s done with that world. But I think her past is going to come back to haunt her in a big way. (edited) 2w
5feet.of.fury “Magic was dead, the Fae were banished or executed, and she would never again have anything to do with the rise and fall of kingdoms. She wasn‘t fated for anything. Not anymore.” I am intrigued. We‘ll see what fate thinks of her desire for normalcy 2w

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG Book 1:Ch.1-3: So far I like Celaena -the fact that she still has spirit after such a harrowing year in the mine is admirable. The prince is arrogant - as he would be. He‘s used to getting what he wants and he‘s probably accustomed to his family‘s power being unconditional. I‘m not sure where the Captain of the guard stands. Is he completely loyal to his master? It‘s an interesting dynamic and an interesting start to the story

#LittensLoveSJM #TOG - a reminder that we are starting our foray into SJM‘s other series, Throne of Glass, starting on Friday. All are welcome to join us - just let me know if you want to be tagged in my daily posts. I‘ve heard that although it takes a few books to really hit its stride, some people actually prefer #TOG to #ACOTAR - looking forward to finding out with you all!

This was a fantastic read! Richly drawn characters, a complex, edge-of-your-seat plot, and a world full of mystery and hidden magic. Celaena is more textured in this book, and I liked her more, I think. There are some real stand out side characters — Nehemiah, please — and an enjoyably dark and gritty challenge to solve. Maybe a touch slow-paced at times, and I‘m definitely glad I read the prequel first, but overall definitely a win.

annahenke I recently reread this one. Still loved it so much all these years later, honestly one of my all time fave series! 3w
BookBr @annahenke It‘s my first read through and can definitely see the series becoming a favourite! 2w

#LittensLoveSJM @LitsyEvents I wanted to post this early since I‘ve seen some interest. After we finish the final instalment of #ACOTAR, I will be hosting the #TOG series by SJM. I‘d like to say that I‘ve heard great things about the series but most say it takes a couple books to really get into the world. She started writing the series as a teen so keep that in mind. Also, there are different views on how to read the series: ⬇️

StayCurious there‘s a purist way that says read in order of publication, but if you want the most emotional impact, there‘s a romantic way of reading. I‘ve chosen to go for the emotional order. I will read the prequel novellas only after the first 3 books in the series. I will read Tower of Dawn before Empire of Storms (these books happen concurrently). I‘d love for you to join me starting June 13th! 2mo

Here we go again… another Sarah J. Maas series to get hooked on.

CrowCAH I‘ll soon be reading this one with my older sister! We‘re starting the major romantasy hype books. Already we‘ve read ACOTAR and Fourth Wing. 3mo
Andarna @CrowCAH nice! I read both of those series‘ and started the Crescent City series as well. I do t so much love too much romance but do enjoy all other aspects of these books. 3mo
CrowCAH @Andarna from what I‘ve read so far, it seems more on the world building and adventure, than romance. But I‘m certainly glad the romance is added. 3mo
slategreyskies @CrowCAH I‘m curious as to which romantasy books made your TBR list. I‘m reading the second book in Fourth Wing now. Throne of Glass is on my list as well. 3mo
CrowCAH @slategreyskies I‘m listening to Iron Flame now too! ACOTAR, I listened to book one. I added A Fate Inked in Blood. Currently reading The Ever King 🏴‍☠️. 3mo

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Mass. 7,3/10 rating. This was not what I expected. While it was good, it was not enough for me to get invested in it. Will not continue the saga.

Finally, my first SJM! I liked it but I didn‘t love it as much as everyone seems to. In the first 300 pages, despite mysterious killings in the castle and death defying tests for Celaena to become the king‘s champion, there seems to be no narrative urgency. Not to mention the idiosyncrasies of mentioning our heroine causing her door hinges to squeak as protection but then being surprised by everyone stopping in unannounced for pages afterward. ⬇️

LeafingThroughLife That said, it did pick up at the end, and I was invested in Celaena‘s story and the romance, so I‘ll probably continue with the series. I think it has room to grow. I‘ll probably get to Heir of Fire - the actual title from my #auldlangspine list - later this year. Thanks to @thebacklistbook and @monalyisha for helping me start my reading year out right! 5mo
monalyisha I totally get feeling like the only person who‘s not on the SJM train! I still haven‘t read any of her books, either. Lonelier and lonelier out here. 😅 Glad this worked for you enough to consider pursuing the next book in the series. Thanks for participating! 🥳 5mo
thebacklistbook I think it matters what mindset one has while reading these. I first read them while in college and it was torture to wait for the next one to come out. Coming back to them now, I felt less invested but comfortable reading it. It picks up in future books. @LeafingThroughLife 5mo
LeafingThroughLife @monalyisha SJM will get you eventually! You can‘t hide forever! 😆 5mo
LeafingThroughLife @thebacklistbook I think I‘ll like it more now that I feel like I know what to expect. Thanks for getting me started on the series. I enjoyed reading from your list! 😀 5mo

This might be ambitious but the end of the year TBR is locked in. I have a plan!

Desolation Canyon and The Widow (already about 1/2 done) are my 15 hours Spotify listens. Throne of Glass, I expect to finish this weekend and then I can start Wreck the Halls. Sasaki and Miyano is something I can definitely breeze through!

Wish me luck!!

I enjoyed this one. It was definitely more political intrigue than romantasy. I am hopeful the next book has a bit more of the love story - however after reading ACOTAR I don‘t know which way the “romance” will go. I‘m on pins & needles because of that. 😂 4.5 💫

My friend finally got me to join the SJM hype train. It took awhile for me to get hooked, but once it got me, I wasn‘t leaving. Lots of YA tropes with this one, but I find it charming overall and there were several moments I was on edge because of everything that was happening.
