⬗ I hope to find another Rachel Harrison book that I love as much as “Such Sharp Teeth,“ but “Cackle“ wasn't it. It was okay, but it didn't have the pull of SST.
⬗ The narration by Dylan Moore fits the story quite well.
pickI loved this book! Annie has just gotten out of a long relationship and has moved to a new town where she meets Sophie, the local witch. This book is all about female friendship, empowerment and also how spiders can be cute 🕷

I think this is my second of hers this year and my fourth total. Consistently 3-4 stars. About halfway through this one and like the main character just fine. Her “sophisticated” new friend is sort of 😑😑
Came across this paragraph about insecurities and bullying in Rachael Harrison's Cackle. As someone whose name rhymes with both "smelly" and "jelly" (and I've never been petite), I totally get this!

pickI was surprised at how much I enjoyed this novel! It's an interesting look at the challenge of forming healthy relationships, at power---especially the power of women---and how people react to it, and at friendships between women. It's silly in places, sure, but I found it fun and thought-provoking.
pickI struggled with this book early on. The writing was engaging, but it didn‘t take long for Annie‘s incessant whining and angst to get on my nerves. The book was saved by the introduction of Ralph, the spider. I loved him so much. I did like the way the book ended, but any comments on that would be spoilery, so I‘ll say no more beyond I‘m glad I stuck with it. Thanks @Chrissyreadit for the #auldlangspine recommendation.

pick🕷🕷🕷½ spiders for this cozy book about a girl who befriends a witch even though the whole town is affraid of her and/or sucks up to her to stay on her good side. I really loved the description of the town & Sophie's house, I want to teleport there. The pet spider was a cute added touch. I really liked the ending & it could be used to start a sequel, which could be really cool. Overall, it was a fun, fall read with a few creepy parts🏡🕷🏰🕸🍵

The story hovers between funny and eerie, with everything from disturbing ghost scenes to moments of pure and poignant friendship.
Ultimately, this is a girl power story about learning to be unapologetically yourself, and that I can absolutely get behind!

I love Harrison and Cackle was a fun story of female triumph!
I thought there was a build up to a big event or reveal but it more coasted in my opinion. But over all a very fun and relatable story, aside from the powers (I wish!).

pickI loved the characters, Annie's character arc was fabulous. I know some readers have been turned off by her seemingly incessant self-loathing, but I saw it as pretty realistic, which made her development even more glorious. I chuckled at least once per page, so that also helps to crank it from 4 to 5 stars for me.
pick4⭐️ I love how the story embraces independence and being unapologetically yourself. I enjoyed the MC facing her inner critic, stops comparing herself to others and lets go of her negative assumptions and embrace her true self. It was super cute and fun to read. What it wasn‘t, was scary in anyway. Sure, it has some creepy elements to it. However, the book is listed as horror, but I don‘t see how it fits in that genre at all.
pickAnnie moves after a break up - meets Sophie (who is a witch) - and learns to like herself and not need a man to be fulfilled.
Annie's self loathing did get tiring towards the end. The message of freeing oneself is good but not always executed well in this story.
I still enjoyed the journey Annie took and it is a good cosy witch story (low pick).

I‘m sitting in the living room with my units as they watch TV and I try to read. I notice that even though I am not interested in the show, I get rather distracted and taken out of the story. I was wondering how others handled the distractions.

I‘ve been a little out of the game, but I‘m hoping to come back strong. Being late with his post doesn‘t count…😁 anyways, here is my #BookSpinBingo list for December. I have already started the listed book along with two others, So I‘m hoping it‘s a strong month.
so-soThis book was interesting. I really enjoyed the character development & writing style. However, I struggled with the slow pace and how the plot for most of the book seemingly was heading no where. I also struggled with how often the author mentioned that the main character was hungover — it felt redundant. The redeeming quality of the book was the inspirational message of the importance of self reliance and self love.

pickAt turns genuinely creepy and delightful. Would not suggest reading for relationship advice or feminist messaging (kind of muddied in both counts). Would suggest reading for 'lil spider friends and Halloween vibes.
pickI saw this book had pretty mixed reviews, but I loved it. It felt like a feminist fairy tale. I really enjoyed the lead up and was curious about where it would end up. I liked the characters- even though the main character Annie had a LOT of growth needed.

pickThis was so close to a #dnf but I plodded on. It got a little spooky in the middle so I was going with a So-So, but the end changed it to a low pick.
Annie was a very annoying person and kind of dumbly naïve, but I guess that was the point.
I also may not be the right target age for this book.
The end made up a lot for me. And I LOVE Ralph.
