Cackle | Rachel Harrison
A darkly funny, frightening novel about a young woman learning how to take what she wants from a witch who may be too good to be true, from the author of The Return. All her life, Annie has played it nice and safe. After being unceremoniously dumped by her longtime boyfriend, Annie seeks a fresh start. She accepts a teaching position that moves her from Manhattan to a small village upstate. Shes stunned by how perfect and picturesque the town is. The people are all friendly and warm. Her new apartment is dreamy too, minus the oddly persistent spider infestation. Then Annie meets Sophie. Beautiful, charming, magnetic Sophie, who takes a special interest in Annie, who wants to be her friend. More importantly, she wants Annie to stop apologizing and start living for herself. Thats how Sophie lives. Annie cant help but gravitate toward the self-possessed Sophie, wanting to spend more and more time with her, despite the fact that the rest of the townsfolk seema little afraid of her. And like, okay. There are some things. Sophies appearance is uncanny and ageless, her mansion in the middle of the woods feels a little unearthly, and she does seem to wield a certain powerbut she couldnt becould she?

Not really sure why this is labeled “horror” — it‘s not. “Cozy horror” (if that‘s a thing?) at best (unless you‘re afraid of 🕷?). It reminded me of some of Grady Hendrix‘s novels - scary elements with a ton of humor and overall, a positive message.

To be honest, I found this horror book to be very underwhelming. There was too much about the ex and not enough Annie coming into her own. Sophie was a neat character, and I liked the town of Rowan and its people, but I just feel like there should‘ve been more. :/

I really enjoyed this one! A fun, fantastical story. This would make a perfect spooky season read or just something fun to snuggle up with. It‘s ultimately about a 30 year old woman finding herself after a big breakup, but it‘s wrapped up in magic. * Beautiful photo from Wildwood Reads. #supernatural #witches #spookyseason #fiction

Not quite what I was expecting from this book, but I really enjoyed it. I was expecting more magic, but it took a while to get magical, and even when it got there, the focus was less on the magic and more on the dangers of defining yourself by your relationships. I can‘t argue with that message, especially when the writing is so good and so much fun!

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Annie seeks a fresh start after a breakup with her boyfriend. She takes a teaching position in a small town where everyone seems to be friendly and rents a cute place (minus all the spiders). Soon she befriends Sophie, who seems so refreshing and cool, but soon Annie begins to notice that something is off.

If you are looking for an actual horror/scary read, choose another book. The Return by the same author was spookier to me.

I kept putting off this book on my TBR. However, once I got into it, I really enjoyed the book. The book basically describes a young , insecure woman coming into her own with the help of an unpredictable friend.
Also I think everyone should have a familiar like Ralph. He was so adorable. If you like spiders that is.

A low so-so. Not sure I actually liked this book. It was short but Annie really annoyed me. The fact that she hadn‘t been alone since she was 13. I didn‘t like how she went about standing up for herself. Trying not to spoil. Did she and Sophie actually have a healthy relationship? Like you can stand up for yourself without being cruel.

Not sure how to review this. There were a lot of spiders.

Yeah for female friendship. Yeah for finding your true self and standing up for it. Do people have to treat you like royalty though? And do you have to treat them as if you were royalty?

I'd like a pet like Ralph. 😊

⬇️ Spoiler

julesG And why an arm for an eye - hurting someone physically for being condescending, hurting your feelings?
I do like most messages in the story, but being rude, not paying for your purchases/coffee/meals, expecting gifts and 'devotion' from the townsfolk is a bit OTT.

Not the scary book I was expecting but it was so cute!! And full of important messages about feminism, gender roles, female friendship, & finding your voice. Annie moves to a new town after an unexpected break-up. She befriends Sophie who is friendly, interesting, & wise. Some of the town residents seem a little afraid of her though... Can Annie fit into her new town while being friends with Sophie? ⭐⭐⭐⭐ #witchyvibes

I never imagined anything would beat out Empire of the Vampire as my favorite book of the year. I can‘t even try to explain how much I loved Cackle. It‘s set in a picturesque town in upstate New York. It really reminded me of Stars Hollow. Actually, this whole book reminded me of Gilmore Girls if it was spooky. But don‘t let the picturesque town and nurturing friendship fool you. This book is pretty intense. There are some gruesome parts.

I was fortunate to snag the audio of this new book really early from library. It‘s a lot of fun! Sort of a cozy version of a witch story… not super scary, loaded with sarcasm and girl power, cursing (the hexing kind, not potty mouth) and cute… spiders? but with a heroine that I really wanted to shake the shit out of from time to time. 😂 Still, an enjoyable read!

🎧 There‘s a good amount of dark sarcastic humor. FLUFF!

Sam dumped Ann & while she acquiesced to being friends she didn‘t want to let go.

Ann gets a dark palm reading that lurks in memory.

She packs & moves to a small town to teach English alone.

Sophie befriends Ann. The town is welcoming but Ann notices the unusual fear exhibited by townsfolk towards Sophie.

We watch Ann grow from a frustrating uncertain insecure pleaser.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4

I‘m sure for many reasons but here‘s one … does anyone else do this?

I just spent a half hour organizing the books I‘m going to read through the end of October. See above.

30 seconds ago I got a notice from the library that Cackle is in my Loan queue …. dammit. 😆

Back to the drawing board … cuz the mood reader in me feels like reading this next. 🤨😆

DrexEdit I totally do this. And the library holds list trips me up every time I think I've got a solid plan! 😆 11mo

Reading this was like stepping into a cozy (and slightly spooky) witchy fairytale! The tone felt a bit uneven and some sinister parts seemed a little more mean than satisfying to me. It was still a fun and festive read for the Halloween season with a feminist undertone. Grab a latte, settle in, and embrace your inner witch! 🎧🕷💚

Rachel Harrison is the Queen of kooky horror! She is quite masterful at balancing the humor with with the chills. Just like "The Return" "Cackle" provided me with such an incredibly entertaining reading experience. Even better, the author provides the reader with a powerful message about self-empowement and independence. Ms. Harrison just keeps getting better and better. I can't wait for her next book! ??
