American Assassin
American Assassin: A Thriller | Vince Flynn
#1 New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn returns with yet another explosive thriller, introducing the young Mitch Rapp, as he takes on his first assignment. Before he was considered a CIA superagent, before he was thought of as a terrorist's worst nightmare, and before he was both loathed and admired by the politicians on Capitol Hill, Mitch Rapp was a gifted college athlete without a care in the world . . . and then tragedy struck. Two decades of cutthroat, partisan politics has left the CIA and the country in an increasingly vulnerable position. Cold War veteran and CIA Operations Director Thomas Stansfield knows he must prepare his people for the next war. The rise of Islamic terrorism is coming, and it needs to be met abroad before it reaches America's shores. Stansfield directs his protge, Irene Kennedy, and his old Cold War colleague, Stan Hurley, to form a new group of clandestine operatives who will work outside the normal chain of commandmen who do not exist. What type of man is willing to kill for his country without putting on a uniform? Kennedy finds him in the wake of the Pan Am Lockerbie terrorist attack. Two-hundred and seventy souls perished that cold December night, and thousands of family and friends were left searching for comfort. Mitch Rapp was one of them, but he was not interested in comfort. He wanted retribution.Six months of intense training has prepared him to bring the war to the enemy's doorstep, and he does so with brutal efficiency. Rapp starts in Istanbul, where he assassinates the Turkish arms dealer who sold the explosives used in the Pan Am attack. Rapp then moves onto Hamburg with his team and across Europe, leaving a trail of bodies. All roads lead to Beirut, though, and what Rapp doesn't know is that the enemy is aware of his existence and has prepared a trap. The hunter is about to become the hunted, and Rapp will need every ounce of skill and cunning if he is to survive the war-ravaged city and its various terrorist factions. As action-packed, fast-paced, and brutally realistic as it gets, Flynn's latest page-turner shows readers how it all began. Behind the steely gaze of the nation's ultimate hero is a young man primed to become an American Assassin.

I wanted to love this story but soo much of it is so bad lol. Right down to the vaguely racist crap that‘s used in the book. It‘s a shame because I love this movie.

DivineDiana That is a shame. ☹️ 3y

Loved this ! Admittedly I watched the movie first, but both were so great. Although it's not my usual genre, this was so action packed and edgy!

If you live in the U.K. this is too good an offer to turn down. The American Assassin, a book in the brilliant Mitch Rapp Series by the late Vince Flynn is available free! Whilst this is one of the latest books he published in the series, chronologically it is the earliest book in the series & would be a great introduction. This is one of my favourite all-time series. If you live outside the U.K. would be worth seeing if it is free.

EadieB @Andrew65 I have 8 of these books and do own the tagged one. I'm missing 5 from the series. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB It is a fantastic series, I have read the first 12. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Wow! I knew you were reading them but didn't know that you finished that many! 5y

Andrew65 @EadieB Been reading them for years, read the tagged book as first in series in October 2015. Only got one left written by Vince before going on to the person who took the series on when he died, Kyle Mills. So addictive, and hard to put down. (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I'll have to check them out! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes, I‘m sure you‘ll love them! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Great! I will have to get them out and put them in the TBR pile. 5y

gradcat I‘m going to check on this...my mother loved his books, but for some reason I never read any of them. With recommendations like these, it behooves me to give Rapp a try, I think. Thanks for the tip! 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat Will be interested to see what you think. 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 It seems I never have enough time...I‘m already way behind for this month. Have you finished the ultrasound? Do you know anything yet? 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat I‘m way behind this month. 5y

This was the first spy novel I‘ve ever read and wow did I love it way more than I thought I did! This book had me laughing like a loon in the middle of the street (I listened to it on audible) and gasping during some of the more intense scenes. I‘m almost scared to watch the movie because I loved the book so much

This is the first book in the Mitch Rapp series. While it is good, it‘s not nearly as compelling as many of the later stories. The story focuses on Rapp‘s training and his adversarial relationship with Stan Hurley, his instructor. Had I read this first, I probably would have given it a so-so, but since I know what is to come,I‘m giving the author the benefit of the doubt. It‘s a decent thriller but not nearly as good as what is to come.

Sitting under the dryer at their hair salon means a major shift from my audiobook to my printed book. More than halfway through, yay! And it just occurred to me that I'm presently reading two books with 'American' in the title.

Becker Best place to read. No one tries to talk to you while you‘re reading under the dryer. 6y

This is the first in the Mitch Rapp series. I enjoyed the plot and also how his character was developed. I will definitely check out the remainder of the series- from what I‘ve read in reviews, the books just get better. 4 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Also I have no idea why I set a reading challenge goal the same year I had baby #2 (in March)- as if these children will give me time to read 😂😭

Mehso-so

This was a read to stretch myself. I will be honest, I enjoy movies like this, but never thought I would enjoy books like this.
And it was not as bad as I thought. It was not my favorite, but I found myself engaged in the story, none the less.
I liked Rapp - his level headed desire to protect and defend our country, liked that he was not in it to kill others, but rather for justice.

CD audio books kill me. I can only listen in the car. So, some days I leave for work early and hang out in the car before heading in for the day... just to listen to another chapter.

Kaylamburson I struggled with this when I used to drive 45-50 min into work. It was great for that, but I didn't have a CD changer, so if a section finished, I couldn't easily start the next! 6y
jbhops @Kaylamburson yep, same here. The worst is, like this book, when they don't tell you the CD has ended and I'm spacing out, not paying attention and then realize I'm 2 chapters into the same CD again! 😂 6y
Kaylamburson Yup! I've been there, too!! 😂 🤣 6y

I'm really happy this one finally came in over the holiday break. I've been looking forward to listening to it before the movie comes out. It's so much better now that I can picture Dylan O'Brien in my head the whole time. 😍😍😍 OH And I can count it for my #LitsyAtoZ! #A! We're going by title right? Or is it author??
