Charming and life affirming. The audio version is great if you like audiobooks; the narrator for Marcellus the 🐙 is perfect. 🤌💯

I had visions of reading all the books over thanksgiving break but that clearly did not happen… I did manage to listen to this while knitting in the evenings, and really liked it. Various lonely characters come together in unexpected ways to make a unique family. My favorite character was the octopus, naturally.

kellyann28 I loooved this book! 5d
Johanna414 @kellyann28 me too! I've been in a bit of a reading slump, and this was apparently the book i needed right now 5d

Starting this one for #LMPBC #Group X

LiteraryinLawrence Wait, so the way the group works is that we mail along physical copies of our 4 books. So each of us chooses one book that we own to start with. My choice that everyone voted on is Remarkably Bright Creatures. I don‘t think you‘ve picked yours yet (those were the posts each of us made, but I don‘t think you made one yet). In November we each read our book while writing notes in the book and then at the end of the month we mail them. 4w
BookwormAHN @LiteraryinLawrence @MaleficentBookDragon Yes and we mail them in the order @suvata sent us the email in. 4w

Heartwarming, feel good kind of book.unique & real characterisation & well crafted story line , but it started off slow with few unnecessary characters (?) which I thought could‘ve been avoided. I love all the sea creatures & specially octopus . Therefore I loved Marcillus 🥰 One of the cute animal characters from fiction. 4⭐️ #bookspinbingo #3

Hi #lmpbc members! I‘m so excited to be in a group together. Here are 2 books that I own that I‘ve been meaning to read. They were mentioned as examples in Chelle‘s post (I hope it‘s ok to “steal” those ideas!) so I know they fit the Gen X theme.

Would you be interested in reading either of these for the book group? I can definitely suggest others if these are not a hit. Thanks!

Finished this one in 2 days. I think anyone who is a fan of Frederick Bachmann will enjoy this book. The story is written in third person narrative following Cameron Cassmore (on a quest to find the father he never knew) and Tova Sullivan (a widow who cleans an aquarium after hours) and also features the first "person" narrative of Marcellus, an octopus resident of the aquarium. 4.5⭐️ Found family is my favorite trope!

As soon as I finished this delightful audiobook I started missing Marcellus the octopus who narrates part of this story. He was far and away the best part of this book. I grew to care about the humans as well as they sought ways to ease their loneliness but my heart belongs to Marcellus.

When everyone started reviewing this book partially narrated by an octopus I didn‘t really think it was for me. Turns out I was wrong! I loved this audiobook.

Ann_Reads So glad to see a lot of positive reviews for this one. The premise of the story also sounded a little weird to me but I decided to use my last Audible credit for this title. 2mo

I loved Remarkably Bright Creatures. Were there a few too many coincidences? Yes. But the characters were great — especially Marcellus, the octopus, whose point of view we get in several chapters. I felt Cameron was a little too old to be blaming all his problems on his long gone mother, but we do see growth from him. Continued with The Bullet That Missed on my #audiowalk.

LMJenkins I loved it too. Finished it this week. 2mo

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Initially I was not interested in this book because of the cartoonish cover. I received a copy as a gift & dutifully read it. Well, slap me with a tentacle. This was easily one of the best books I've read this year. The imperfect characters melted my heart. I would never have thought a book with an octopus as a narrator could move me like this. I was wrong. The story of Tova & Marcellus's friendship was just what I needed without knowing it.

CBee Slap me with a tentacle 😂😂😂 I loved this one too! 3mo

One elderly a Swedish immigrant, a 30-year-old man with a bad case of arrested development & an octopus are all rolled into one great story. The story explores the effects of grief & yet manages to be filled with moments of humor. Marcel‘s sections were delightful.

I loved the way it all came together. I loved seeing Cameron mature & everyone slowly discovering their connections. I loved Tova learning how to trust people again and let them in.

This delightful and charming book is about making connections and dealing with grief. A sentient octopus plays a major role in helping his human caretakers to find those connections.

I was utterly charmed by this story and these characters, particularly Marcellus the giant pacific octopus. At the core of this story are lonely people (and an octopus) who find each other when they need it the most. Definitely reminded me of “A Man Named Ove” in some ways. The narrators of the audiobook were also perfect. 🐙🐙🐙🐙🐙

2. I loved the characters, I‘m drawn into books more if I like and am rooting for the people I‘m reading about. It gave voice to an Octopus as well, literally, as it was audio lol, he is an important character, he tells part of the story no one else can.

Marcellus was an unexpectedly thoughtful individual. I enjoyed his sassy observations of humans and his penchant for late night snacking in the sea cucumber exhibit. The strong bond between Tova and Marcellus brought changes to both their lives. Tova, a widow who cleans the aquarium at night, finds herself planning for a future alone, not realizing she‘s had family in her friends all along. I love a good curmudgeon-y main character.

A big two thumbs up for the feel-good book of the year starring an elderly Swedish woman, a struggling 30-something, and an exceptionally clever octopus. A beautiful story of the ways grief and love can mold and change us, and the ways in which connection can heal. Such a delightfully surprising web of relationships in this gem of a novel. Marin Ireland and Michael Urie are spectacular on the audiobook, so treat yourself to a listen if you can.
