Mysterious Mr. Quin
Mysterious Mr. Quin | Agatha Christie
52 posts | 64 read | 39 to read
The Queen of Mystery has come to Harper Collins! Agatha Christie, the acknowledged mistress of suspense creator of indomitable sleuth Miss Marple, meticulous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and so many other unforgettable characters brings her entire oeuvre of ingenious whodunits, locked room mysteries, and perplexing puzzles to William Morrow Paperbacks. The inimitable Christie intrigues, surprises, and delights once again with The Mysterious Mr. Quin a riveting collection of short stories centered around the enigmatic Harley Quin, whose unpredictable comings and goings are usually a good indication that something is about to happen and rarely for the best."

Another short story collection, featuring the mysterious Mr. Quinn, who shows up at the right time to help Mr. Satterthwaite solve the mistery of the day. Mr. Satterthwaite is a very lovable detective and his relationship with Mr. Quinn develops in an interesting way.

I really liked the stories in this one, but I'm of two minds about Mr. Quin. At first, I thought there were way too many coincidences; then it seemed impossible that this wasn't supernatural. And for some reason, even though I usually love supernatural everything, I wanted a real-life explanation from Christie -- probably because thats what I expect from her. I liked seeing Mr. Satterthwaite again. I didn't expect that! 💛

I was on a bit of a roll this week, so I listened to this early. I loved it!!! I kept thinking I knew exactly what was going on, but the rug was pulled out from under me EVERY TIME. And yet, as is the magic of Christie, the solution felt completely fair. A crime is committed at a party that happens to have Hercule Poirot, Superintendent Battle, Colonel Race and Ariadne Oliver all in one room. It was so fun!

I haven‘t really enjoyed Christie‘s short stories in the past (too much Hastings), but I really enjoyed this collection of short mysteries featuring Mr. Satterthwaite and the mysterious Mr. Quin, who seems to appear just when a “drama” is unfolding. Mr. Satterthwaite grows a bit through each successive story, and the mystery of Mr. Quin is nicely handled as just a little quirk of Mr. Satterthwaite‘s life. (Also I just like saying Satterthwaite.)

I do not like extending library book due dates, so I finished this one right before walking in
Did enjoy this collection of short stories though. Think it should‘ve been named after Mr Satterthwaite, as it followed his growth from being an observer to interacting with drama. They call it that. I like how these stories make it that all the information you need to solve it is in front of you. All you need is to rethink it unbiased. #AgathaChristie

I did not enjoy this one as much as some of Agatha Christie‘s books. I think because of the way it seemed like a lot of short stories strung together to make a book. #agathachristieclubr2 #merryreaders #wintergames @Clwojick

veritysalter I struggled with this one too, far too fantastical, I suppose because in every other novel of Christie‘s magic and the supernatural are always hoaxes, so I had difficulty accepting that this time she wanted us to believe? 4y

Short stories about Mr Satterthwaite & Mr Quin. I wish Christie had given Mr Satterthwaite a less complicated name & used it less in each story. Mr Quin shows up when needed & sometimes is only seen by Satterthwaite. A little bit different from her other books.

4. How did you feel about Mr. Satterthwaite, both on his own and as a companion to Mr. Quin? What did you make of their relationship at the end of the last story?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I really liked Mr. Satterthwaite. He was a bit of a departure from some of Christie's other characters. I did think it was funny how she stated multiple times that he had “feminine“ characteristics of intuition & insight. In some ways this book almost had an alternate-identity vibe - as though Mr. Quin is just another side of Mr. Satterthwaite's psyche. 4y
janeycanuck I liked Mr. Quin more than Mr. Satterthwaite. He was just kinda... dull and boring. @TheAromaofBooks 4y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck I confess that the end of the last story is one of my favorite moments of Christie. I found it so bittersweet and touching, and I listened to that scene several times on audiobook. Okay and I cried!! This may be TMI, but I identify with Mr. Satterthwaite a lot, in him being on the sidelines of other people's love stories, and I loved how that was addressed with generosity by Mr. Quin. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I like Mr. Satterthwaite as well, and you're right - I did like the way that Mr. Quin always made sure that Mr. Satterthwaite understood how important he (Mr. S) was. @ferskner @janeycanuck 4y

3. The Mysterious Mr. Quin is unabashedly supernatural, in contrast with most of Christie's other work. Did you enjoy this departure? Did you think it worked?

#agathachristieclubR2

Laughterhp I did really enjoy the supernatural storytelling, but I don‘t think I realized it was supernatural until the end. I was also listening to this on audio, so I could have missed some clues. After I saw that it was supernatural, I had to make sure they weren‘t included in the Last Seance book I have of Agatha Christie spooky stories. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I liked the way that that aspect was kept vague in many ways. It's implied, but not overt. I also loved the way that Christie didn't try to get bogged down in explanations. Mr. Quin just IS. @Laughterhp 4y
janeycanuck Yeah, it wasn‘t for me. But wouldn‘t life be dull if we all liked the same thing? @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks 4y
See All 7 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck - So true!! And I will say that while I enjoyed these at the time, I don't see myself returning them like I do so many of Christie's other books. @Laughterhp 4y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks I‘m hoping we don‘t see any more of Mr. Quin..... 4y
ferskner @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck That's a great description, Sarah. I like that Christie doesn't try to make it into a thing. He's just a quirk of Mr. Satterthwaite's life. I also like that she's clearly trying something new, not a straight detective story nor a thriller. If feel that it connects well with Miss Marple coming up next, that she was trying to find new aspects to the genre that she was perhaps growing bored with. 4y
TheAromaofBooks And maybe in some ways this book was a response to Poirot's popularity - the anti-Poirot in many ways - all about feelings and intuition rather than logic and deduction. @ferskner @Laughterhp @janeycanuck 4y

2. How did Mr. Quin stack up against the other detectives we've met so far (Poirot, Tommy and Tuppence, etc.)?

#agathachristieclubR2

Laughterhp He was very clever and kind of let people work out the issues and clues for themselves. I didn‘t at first like the past storytelling, where they were in the future and solving past cases. But I liked how Quin helped them work through issues. 4y
TheAromaofBooks It was a really strange style, where Mr. Quin isn't really the detective exactly - Mr. Satterthwaite does most of the work! But I still liked him as a character.
 @Laughterhp
4y
janeycanuck He‘s at the bottom of my list, Tommy & Tuppence are my favs. I did like his sort of Socratic method for helping solve the little mysteries, that was very unique. @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks 4y

TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck - Tommy & Tuppence are the top of my list, too! I love them so hard!! @Laughterhp 4y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks they just make me laugh so much, I love it! 4y
ferskner @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck I really like him! You're right, Mikala, that Mr. Quin seems to be more of a guide than a detective, and Mr. Satterthwaite is kind of his agent. He's not my favorite by any means, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this collection that I have a huge soft spot for him. 4y
janeycanuck Have you stepped away from #agathachristieclubr2 or will it be resuming? There‘s a couple of us still reading but none of us are sure what the order we‘re supposed to be following is! 4y

TheAromaofBooks I enjoyed this one as well! I really thought I had read all of Christie's mysteries before, but this one did not ring a bell for me. I thought the short story format worked great here. @Laughterhp 4y
janeycanuck Haha... I wondered if I had messed up! I did not enjoy this one at all. I found most of the stories non-sensical and dull. I‘m glad @TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp found something they liked in it, though. 4y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp @janeycanuck Haha a mixed bag this time with our enjoyment of the book! This is a surprise favorite for me. Even reading this outside on the loveliest of days didn‘t make it better. I didn‘t love it in the beginning and it just went downhill from there for me. The stories were long and dull and hard to follow. The mysteries were boring and nonsensical. The odd story here or there was okay but generally, yulch. I had never heard of Mr. Quin before reading this. I really enjoyed the supernatural/potentially fantasy mystery stories. At first I didn‘t think I was going to like these stories because they were talking about what was happening but you weren‘t experiencing it. However, the more I listened the more I liked the different stories.

My favorite short story collection yet from Agatha Christie. Who is Mr. Quin? I've come up with Mr. Satterthwaite's invention or invisible friend, (but other people see him) an angel, Death himself. If you've read this book, what are your thoughts?
In any case, excellent stories!

I've never read the Satterthwaite/Quin stories before & I was absolutely delighted with this collection. Sometimes, even in the Poirot & Marple books, Christie can seem like she's phoning it in stylistically. These stories felt fresh. Mr. Satterthwaite is written with a deft, loving touch & I love the sense of fabulism that permeates these almost gothic & romantic puzzle stories. Christie flirts with fantasy here & it pays off. #agathachristieclub

Finished my last book for June and managed to stay caught up with #agathachristieclub. I enjoyed this selection of stories of Mr. Satterthwaite‘s encounters with Mr. Quin. I‘m still not sure what to make of the character, but I loved Hugh Fraser‘s narration. This also seemed to have less of the in-your-face racism that have been in some of the other early Christie novels. 3 stars.

The Quin stories are some of the purest face-value mysteries you can read. Satterthwaite is a surrogate for the reader, a reasonably intelligent man without Sherlock or Hercule's superpowers. Like us, he's given everything he needs to see the answer; Mr. Quin simply provides a subtle nudge in the right direction. This may not be a Christie masterpiece, but it offers a more accommodating environment for literary sleuths to hone their own skills.

A strange mystery from the Queen of Mystery herself 🔎 Really enjoyed this book that collects the series of shorts written about the mysterious Mr. Quin -- it is a bit different from her usual! ~ #FunFridayPhoto #Mystery

BookDragon14 I LOVE Agatha Christie!!! 8y
bmsddk @BookDragon14 Awesome, me too!! What is your favourite sleuth of hers? 8y
BookDragon14 Well, technically I'm still waiting to get to the library, so I've only read the one that I own which is The Murder On The Orient Express, but I really do love Hercule Poirot!! 8y
See All 15 Comments
BookDragon14 And who's the other one again? It's a woman isn't it? 8y
bmsddk @BookDragon14 It only takes one to be hooked ? Murder on the Orient Express was a great Poirot (for some reason that was one of the later ones I read)! There's also Miss Marple, who's more a physically sneak around and search for clues rather than focused on "the little grey cells." Tommy and Tuppence are a mix between logic and searching crime solving. The Superintendent is a people oriented investigator (he's my second favourite after Poirot). 8y
bmsddk @BookDragon14 She has a couple other reoccurring sleuths too, but I'm not sure who they are (haven't gotten to them yet, haha, she has so many books). Her plays are brilliant!! And her singles... from the ones I've read...just WOW (Crooked House is definitely a top pick for me). 8y
bmsddk @BookDragon14 What are some of the Agatha Christie's you're looking at next picking up at the library? 8y
BookDragon14 I'm not sure. Do you have any suggestions? 8y
bmsddk @BookDragon14 If you want to continue with Poirot, then Murder in Mesopotamia or Death on the Nile are great ones to go with next, in my opinion (Five Little Pigs, Hickory Dickory Dock, and One Two Buckle My Shoe are other of my faves with him, but people tend to love or hate those). 8y
bmsddk @BookDragon14 It you want to go with a single, Crooked House. And Then There Were None is also brilliant, but Crooked House drew me in more (I might be in the minority on this?). Her plays and short story collections are fun, but if you want to get more of a sense of her style, might be good to read a couple more of her novels, as I find she tended to experiment a bit (very successfully!) with her single shorts and plays. 8y
bmsddk @BookDragon14 Here more unusual full books, like Mr. Quin or Endless Night, I would classify similarly add her single shorts. With Miss Marple, as I understand from others, reading the first book is a good start. Past that, I'm not sure. The Tommy and Tuppence books are, in my opinion, acquired flavours. I recommend trying them out sooner rather than later though, because they're fun reads if you do like them! 8y
bmsddk @BookDragon14 I've read a couple Colonel Race books, but didn't realize it, so the character didn't stand out to me. But they were good. The book that sparked my interest in the Superintendent was Towards Zero -- that is a great one to go with too! 8y
bmsddk @BookDragon14 Sorry about the extensive response!! 8y
BookDragon14 That's ok I'm glad you can tell me about them!! Especially since no one I know reads them. This is awesome! I can't wait to start reading them!!! 8y

katedensen @MrBook I'm very predictable. At least as far as bookstores are concerned. 8y

Cupofjo @MrBook YES, this helps, but I don't need much nudging! My budget may tho!! Lol 8y
MrBook @SusanInTiburon Aye, that! There's a handful of staff that pop out of seemingly hidden doors once in awhile. MrBook @sharimichele WOOHOO!!! *big hug* Fantastic!!! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! You, me, @BookBabe , & any other Litsy-ers who want to should do a #LitsyPhotoOp there. You up for that? ☺️ 8y
ultrabookgeek @MrBook I am down for a photo op there too! 8y
Procrastireader Is this the bookstore that started its own imprint to bring back mysteries that had gone out of print? 8y
MrBook @Procrastireader Hmmmmm, perhaps? When I'm there next I'll ask! Or @sharimichele , if you can spare the moment 😁. 8y
ultrabookgeek @MrBook @Procrastireader I can stop by on Monday and ask! 8y
MarticaMustRead Oh man, i must make it there some day! 8y
MrBook @ultrabookgeek You keep changing your Litsy handle, AAHH 😂! @MarticaMustRead Definite bucket list placeholder 😎👍🏻. 8y
ultrabookgeek @MrBook @Procrastireader whoops! I totally went in and asked - they do have a few imprints - one for old editions, one for requested works by selected authors and I think one for existing works but special covers or unique features just for the imprint. 8y
MrBook @ultrabookgeek Awesome! You are a superstar in my eyes ☺️👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻👌🏻! Thank you for the info! 8y

Bornwithabookinmyhand I am once again reading "AND THEN THERE WERE NONE". I haven't read it since high school; it is better than I remember. She was truly brilliant. 9y

As a literary British Harlequinade, Agatha Christie‘s The Mysterious Mr. Quin blends aspects of medieval morality plays and Italian commedia dell'arte to create a drama of crimes of the heart, recasting the buffoonish harlequin as an enigmatic figure who rectifies the plights of aggrieved lovers.
