Briar Club | Kate Quinn
The New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye and The Rose Code returns with a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington, DC, boardinghouse during the McCarthy era.Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation's capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship: poised English beauty Fliss, whose facade of perfect wife and mother covers gaping inner wounds; policeman's daughter Nora, who finds herself entangled with a shadowy gangster; frustrated baseball star Beatrice, whose career has come to an end along with the women's baseball league of WWII; and poisonous, gung-ho Arlene, who has thrown herself into McCarthy's Red Scare. Grace's weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own. When a shocking act of violence tears the house apart, the Briar Club women must decide once and for all: who is the true enemy in their midst?Capturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America, The Briar Club is an intimate and thrilling novel of secrets and loyalty put to the test.

#Read2025

I‘m catching up on my April reviews this weekend & I loved this book! A good thing as it was a trifecta of challenge prompts: #AuthorAMonth #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead & one of the books from @JacqMac ‘s #AuldLangSpine list. This is my third Kate Quinn book & maybe my favorite. The audiobook was stellar & I finished & listened to the author notes twice + an interview with the author & narrator who really brought the characters to life. ⬇️

DebinHawaii … I learned a lot about the Red Scare, McCarthy & Washington DC in the era. The mystery was good as was the ways the characters were introduced & their layers uncovered. I also enjoyed the sentient Briar House & the communal dinners with recipes & music selection of the times included. It kept me engrossed during lots of airport commutes in April & will likely be a favorite of the year for me. 18h

I‘m a day late for #literarycrew it started with a murder and a cast of characters I mainly abhorrd. 100 pages in and I wondered if I‘d keep going. It's been years since I've read Kate Quinn, so I'm very glad #authoramonth had her listed for April. This book had me hooked from the first chapter. I couldn't stop reading. Pixel and I went on extra long dog walks all to give me more time with this audiobook. The ending did not disappoint. Highly recommend to anyone who loves historical fiction.

7. Discuss the murder mystery. Were you expecting it to play a larger role in the story? Were you surprised by who the victim and who the perpetrator were? ~from Plainfield Area Public Library #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

CatLass007 I definitely didn‘t see any of that coming. Quinn‘s characters often go through all kinds of trauma but in the end things generally work out for the best. The ways in which they all work out are often unexpected. 4d
Sace I was very surprised by the ending! It added to the enjoyment. 4d
Karisa I was relieved that none of my favorite characters had died 😅 It kept the book moving forward but wasn‘t really the most important part. I liked seeing the author pull that off. So clever! 4d
mcctrish The ending was surprising @Karisa I was getting a bit stressed about who was killed and who would kill 3d
DebinHawaii I agree, the end somewhat surprised me. I confess I was having a dark couple of days while listening & I asked Google if any of the women died in the book & AI said two died! I was so mad & upset I had to dig deeper & learned they didn‘t die & it was men & Grace‘s spy partner but Sydney‘s husband was a surprise still. I needed a happy ending! 18h

6. Food plays a significant part in the story. Discuss the symbolic meaning of the Briar Club‘s communal meals and how they foster a sense of belonging. ~from Plainfield Area Public Library #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Karisa Food does bring people together. Grace was wonderful for realizing it and taking a chance on her housemates. 4d
mcctrish A communal table makes people feel like they belong, eating together nourished their bellies and their souls 3d
DebinHawaii The food was one of my favorite parts. I loved how it brought them together & how it wasn‘t just feeding them, it fed & improved their lives in so many ways. I listened to the audiobook but I‘m going to go back & look up some of the recipes (& I enjoyed the music to eat by for each dish too!) 18h

5. Examine the themes of secrecy, deception, and truth-telling in the novel. How do the characters‘ hidden pasts and double lives affect their relationships? ~from Plainfield Area Public Library Reading Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Jerdencon I think they all had their own baggage that they brought which affected how they interacted with each other and their views. 4d
CatLass007 I think the saddest example of secret-keeping was Fliss. She had so much negative self talk. When she was finally able to be honest with her husband it was so uplifting. 4d
mcctrish @CatLass007 her mantra of ‘bad mother‘ broke my heart. The secrets all stem from women having no power in a patriarchal society and coming together in their little Briar Club tribe was so positive 3d
See All 6 Comments
CatLass007 @mcctrish It broke my heart too. But I think the women in her family who didn‘t work outside the home and had baby after baby also contributed to the way she felt about herself. Granted, they too were victims of a patriarchal society but all they passed on to Fliss was their ugly attitudes. The found family of the Briar Club was a powerful force in the lives of these women. They empowered Fliss to actually communicate her needs to her (cont)⬇️ 3d
CatLass007 husband, who turned out to be so understanding and supportive. Here was a man who was not afraid of a strong, intelligent woman. They are still few and far between. 3d
DebinHawaii Yes, we definitely all have a story & a pile of baggage to go with it & I think Quinn did a good job in revealing it & showing the impact. At the end, I still disliked Arlene but I also felt sorry for her, she became more human. And yes, I was happy to see the positive journey of Fliss—I‘d have been mad if she didn‘t get a “happy” & fufilling ending. 18h

4. Discuss the role Grace March plays in bringing the women together. What does her character represent in terms of female empowerment and community building? ~from Plainfield Area Public Libry Reading Guide

mcctrish I started to wonder about Grace just after the 100 page mark when I committed to reading - I LOVED The Americans and I was curious if there was a connection. That said, her desire for found family and seeing who everyone was and nudging them towards their paths was such a matriarchal role. She was a favourite 3d
DebinHawaii Grace was one of my favorites too @mcctrish I love how she brought everyone together & connected all these dissimilar women & the men too. She mentored & drove positive change for everyone & I liked the air of mystery about her. She cared so much about Pete & Lina too. 18h

3. Briarwood house itself narrates some of the chapters. How does the house‘s perspective shape the reader‘s understanding of the events and characters? Did you enjoy hearing from an inanimate object? ~from Plainfield Area Public Library Reading Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Jerdencon Honestly when I first read that the house was talking I was a little put off and found it gimmicky but in the end it didn‘t bother me too much. 4d
CatLass007 I love a good fantasy! This slight fantastical aspect gave insight into all the characters effect on one another and their environment. (edited) 4d

2. The point of view rotates among the women of the boarding home. Frequently
when we get to a new point of view we find that the truth differs from the
perceptions that others have. Why do you think Quinn chose to tell the story in
this way and what is she trying to say with it? ~from Plainfield Area Public Library Reading Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Jerdencon I think it helped keep the suspense going this way. 4d
CatLass007 I enjoyed getting the perspectives of each boarder. It‘s a rare talent to be able to write something so difficult so well. Julia Quinn is a new “must read” author for me. And since I listened to the audiobook, I appreciated the narrator‘s ability to give each character her own distinctive voice. 4d
Karisa I liked the rotating POV‘s. Usually I get connected to one character and don‘t want to move onto another. But somehow she really made it work. 4d
mcctrish I‘m agree with @Jerdencon and the suspense but I do have to add that it‘s a lot of characters to keep moving between and their stories. I wonder if we needed them all. I appreciated getting back to Fliss and understanding her more and her Post Partum Depression. I guess it helped illustrate how giving women no power in society can look different (edited) 3d
DebinHawaii The audio book really brought this to life & an interview with the author & narrator at the end talked about making the women from different backgrounds made it easier to narrate. I think she also did the multiple POVs to show that what we think we know about people, particularly living in such close quarters may not be true or all their is about them & I think that‘s true—people are onions with many layers & nuances. 18h

1. The novel is set against the backdrop of the Red Scare and McCarthyism. How do
these historical events impact the lives and choices of the characters? ~from Plainfield Area Public Library Reading Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Information about the Red Scare and McCarthyism linked in comments.

Librarybelle History Channel info on the Red Scare and McCarthyism: https://www.history.com/articles/red-scare 4d
Jerdencon I found the time period very interesting because even though I had heard about the red scares I never knew much about the specifics. Always like to learn something new when reading. 4d
CatLass007 There were a lot of “witch hunts” during that time. This is the first time I‘ve read a book that references it. There were a couple of episodes of MASH that brought home just what a frightening time it was. Loyalty oaths and naming names. Lives were ruined. The TV show Babylon 5 had seasons where a different type of McCarthyism was rampant. I don‘t think it affected some of the members of the Briar Club much at all. But for others the (cont)⬇️ 4d

CatLass007 events were catastrophic. And the paranoia about anyone who was even remotely different was sheer insanity. 4d
Karisa @CatLass007 Sounds familiar to some of the things happening today! It is scary stuff! 4d
Karisa @Jerdencon I like to learn something new while reading too. I think I‘d only heard mentions here and there to the Red Scare and McCarthyism before. I know that Marvelous Mrs. Maisel mentions it 😊 4d
CatLass007 @Jerdencon @karisa I just saw this article in which a judge compares deportation threats to the Red Scare: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/law/judge-release-mohsen-mahdawi-columbia-student-e5... 4d
Karisa @CatLass007 It‘s so sad how many lives are being hurt 4d
mcctrish @Karisa I thought it was a very timely read with current political events ( Marvellous Mrs Maisel is the BEST) 3d
Karisa @mcctrish Unfortunately, yes! At least Canada didn‘t go to the Sith (I‘ve watched and re-watched every episode soooo many times! Love!) 3d
DebinHawaii Sorry, I‘m so late but I really learned a lot from reading the book, googling more details & the author‘s notes at the end. I knew a little about the red scare but not that much. I agree with @CatLass007 that certain Briar Club members were affected much more than others. 18h

This is my first Kate Quinn novel and I enjoyed every minute of it. I liked how each chapter was used to develop a character and gradually revealed how their lives intertwined. I also liked how every time I thought I had a connection figured out it changed. Seeing the characters become a chosen family of sorts and how challenges brought them together was refreshing. Whew! It‘s been too long since I‘ve been here. What can I say, life happened. I‘m taking a pass on a number of books that I read, but I just finished this and loved it. It‘s a bit different from Quinn‘s other books, more of an ensemble, multi-thread story. Wonderful characters and set at an interesting time in history. Definitely 5⭐️

dabbe Beautiful spot. 🤩🤩🤩 5mo

Sace @Sargar114 I wasn‘t planning on this one because I don‘t already own it, but I can‘t pass it up at that price. 5mo

CatLass007 I put in my library hold on 12/08, but the wait is several months. I already had my eye on Kate Quinn, so I‘m looking forward to this. I may not get to read it with the rest of the group in April, but I‘ll definitely read it. Kate Quinn is the April #AuthorAMonth also. I like the way that worked out!! Also, her four book Empress of Rome series is free on Audible. Let‘s keep our fingers crossed that it stays that way for a while.🤞 (edited) 5mo
Sace @CatLass007 I have not heard of the Empress of Rome series. I just added the first book to my library. 5mo

5 ⭐.
Friendship and family, war-time 1950's,
some abuse, some art, some communism, some gangster, some women's baseball leagues...a little bit of slit of stuff.
This will probably be my next pic for my f2f bookclub.

CoverToCoverGirl I loved the baseball storyline. I made me think about Tom Hanks line the movie In A League Of Their Own.. “There‘s no crying in baseball.” Loved that movie. 5mo

I love Kate Quinn, bar none. I‘ve enjoyed all of her books, and this is no exception. There are a few things that kept it from being a favorite: there are just too many characters (the house is even a character, which I actually liked, but come on) and she tried to fit almost too much cultural and political history into the narrative which made it really long and sometimes hard to keep up with. That all being said her characters were well drawn ⬇️

candc320 Cont‘d: and the mystery at the heart of the story - who is the dead body at Briar House?! - kept me turning those pages. If you like historical fiction you can‘t go wrong with Kate Quinn. 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫 5mo

The story opens with a murder. Who is it and why did it happens slowly unfolds through the book as we meet all the wonderful women of the Briar Club. Quinn has her touch of historical fiction highlighting life in the 50‘s giving each character a piece of what woman struggled with in that decade. It‘s a great story of women coming together and how their lives intertwined. Satisfying ending as well ☺️

I‘m in the minority here but I didn‘t even finish this one. I still had 4 hours left & I doubt I‘m going to renew it to finish. Maybe because there were so many characters, it was hard to keep up. Plus I‘m not really into the whole pulling characters from other stories & entwining it into another story. There were some other things that irked me: all the different accents, it just felt like she was trying to address every major issue women were

ncsufoxes facing at the time in this one story. Which it‘s important to highlight the struggles of women in the 50s but it was just too much for me. Maybe I just wasn‘t in the right place for this book to appeal to me. 6mo

Very good. Enjoyed the suspense and the build up to the conclusion. Loved getting to know all the characters and their stories. Rich in details which makes you feel part of the story. Also loved how the house is a character all of its own which gives it an extra layer. Thank you #Netgalley and #HarperCollins for the free copy.

To anyone who found this book slow at first, and wondered where in the heck it was going- you‘re not alone.I‘m so glad I stuck with it, as it‘s now up there as one of my favorites. Many of the characters will live in my heart forever. I could not put this book down once I reached the halfway point. As a bonus, the story contains recipes, many of which I plan on trying. I highly recommend this book!!
