Can You Forgive Her?
Can You Forgive Her? | Anthony Trollope, Dinah Birch
In the first of his six Palliser novels, Trollope deftly explores the tensions in Victorian society between reform and tradition, and the interplay between money, power, and politics. Dinah Birch's lively introduction discusses the relationships at the heart of the novel and shows how issues of gender, social and economic change, and politics clarify the novel's place in contemporary life. The edition reflects recent critical revaluations of Trollope's significance as a major novelist, including the influence of the new economic criticism, and new interests in Victorian liberalism. The book includes an updated critical bibliography and explanatory notes that elucidate cultural, literary, and political allusions. About the Series For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

#20in4 readathon @Andrew65

It has been an absolute crazy week with my 16 year old anxiously waiting on her exam results. Yesterday was manic, sorting out her college placement. Now for a calm and peaceful weekend please. 😌

I'm aiming for 20 hours reading the tagged, SQPR and Salman Rushdie's essay collection, Languages of truth for #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

I'm hoping to finish all 3 before the end of the month.

Soubhiville Good luck! (edited) 1y

CrowCAH I have never heard of this classic. Sounds interesting. Unfortunately, since it‘s such a long book clocking in near 800 pages, I won‘t be able to join the read along. Since my daughter was born last month, I‘ve been sticking with shorter works. Hope you enjoy the book! (Keep me apprised of the next buddy read for the classics.) 1y

I finally started reading Trollope and finished the first of the Palliser novels.
Alice Vavasor is not your traditional 19th century upperclass woman. Her disobedience is a central theme in this book that despite its setting reads as a contemporary novel. Trollope's account of a society in which money, breeding and influence are the primary routes into power is pretty familiar. The mixture of satire and romance makes the book a real pageturner.

Reviewsbylola You‘re inspiring me. I‘ve wanted to read Trollope for years! 6y

“Knowing you as I thought I did, I could not understand your loving such a man as him. It was as though one who had lived on brandy should take himself suddenly to a milk diet, - and enjoy the change!”

In my current read George thinks of Alice as his #MyLoveMyLife and tries to win her back in a hilarious way 😂!

I really liked this book! It was a little slow to start but once I got started I just jumped in and loved it! I could wait to find out what happened with all the characters! There were a few phrases in here that made me cringe (being published in 1865) but over all I loved it!

Ruthiella Yes Alice‘s behavior is hard to understand at times. I felt she was trying to figure out which relationship allowed her the most agency. Love is less important than independence. But I think I read between the lines A LOT!😀 6y

I‘d been giving George Vavasor the benefit of the doubt up till now, and I still don‘t know if he‘s actually going to send this letter to his ex-girlfriend/cousin, Alice, but the fact that he wrote it shows he is a complete and utter jerk.

Aimeesue George is rather dastardly, isn't he? Ah, a Victorian woman's choices! Rather difficult for the modern reader to bear. 7y

Alice Vavasor has everything going for her on the marriage market, except that she is deeply ambivalent about marriage. Trying to balance Self and Society, she jilts first one man, then another — has she ruined her life, or can you forgive her? Wonderful characters, braided plot lines, charming commentary: a satisfying world to be immersed in.

But oh my word, as a woman it makes me so grateful to be living in the 21st century!!!
