This installment of By the Book is such a fun read for those of us who have been educated and motivated by Kendi‘s incredible work (and probably a fun read for most other book lovers, too 🙂): https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/25/books/review/ibram-x-kendi-by-the-book-interv...

Very interesting read. I love knowing what other people are reading, or their book recommendations and their reading habits. Worth the read. I created some questions inspired by this book, to which I answered on my Instagram account. Here is the link, don't hesitate to answer to these questions ;)

This is such a cool book! I can look up the authors I‘m reading and find out what they think about books. And many of my favorites are among the authors interviewed. A new favorite is James McBride, whose Deacon King Kong I‘m reading right now.

Such a great gift Cindy 💝

Day 8 - #Writers #ForeverNovember
#ByTheBook #PamelaPaul

Loved this book! 65 of the world‘s leading writers open up about books & authors that have meant the most to them. I really enjoyed the questions and answers posed to them especially what books these writers have read and enjoyed. I hope that they release a new book with more writers as I also enjoyed being admitted into the private world of the authors featured in this book. Recommended

I‘ve been dipping in and out of this marvelous anthology this past week, taking LOTS of notes. Thanks for your original post @Reviewsbylola that first put this book on my radar. While it‘s a bit “dated” in terms of book recommendations it‘s still delightful and full of wonderful insight into the minds of some beloved authors.

Guys, I‘m giddy over this book. I‘m only two columns in and I‘m just smiling ear to ear, nodding, laughing, and furiously stacking new titles.

I personally wasn‘t familiar with the NYT column “By the Book,” so if you read it religiously I don‘t think there‘s anything new here. If you have not (and especially if, like me, you love Nick Hornby‘s Things I‘ve Been Reading column) you‘ve gotta get this book! Perfect for all Book lovers.

Megabooks This sounds so good! 5y
Blaire It is my favorite part of the book review and I have and love this book! So there‘s not anything new but they were all so wonderful to read and reread. 5y

I just discovered this neat little recap of 2018 on my Kindle app called Your 2018 Year in Review. This is a little skewed because my husband shares my Amazon account but I still enjoyed seeing the numbers all in one place like this.

Pamwurtzler Very cool. I wonder how it decides how many days you read? 5y
Lindy @Pamwurtzler Digital reading is tracked by Amazon and other parties. They can gather a lot of information about reading habits. 5y
Lola @Pamwurtzler I‘m guessing by how many days I open the app on my iThings-which isn‘t every single day, so another way this isn‘t terribly accurate but still fun to see. 5y

#SeptemberDanes Day 19: All these celebrities/personalities share a #Fascination with the written word. This book is a compilation of the interviews conducted by Pamela Paul, editor of the Book Review for The New York Times Book Review. There are 65 interviews found in this book with witty exchanges featuring literary notables such as Amy Tan, Khaled Hosseini, Neil Gaiman, Hilary Mantel among others. (from today's edition)
What's the best gift book you've gotten?
When I was 10, my mother came home with "A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K. Le Guin. I absolutely loved it, I read it many, many times throughout the years, and I do think it changed something in me. It touched me deeply, and I remember thinking that I wanted to touch like that too. I reread it a few years ago, and I still think it's a great novel.

Leniverse I have to agree with him there. A Wizard of Earthsea is amazing. I loved it as a child and I love it still. 7y
vivastory @Leniverse I still need to read it 7y
Leniverse Oh! Well, yes you do! 😮 It's a quick read, so get to it! At least the first book! 😂 7y
See All 7 Comments
Leniverse It's probably best experienced for the first time in childhood, but you've missed out on that, so... 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7y
vivastory @Leniverse it's very high on my TBR. The Lathe of Heaven is one of the best books I've read this year. I've been wanting to read more Le Guin ever since. 7y
Leniverse That's one I haven't read. 😂 But it's high up on my TBR. 7y

A collection of author interviews; nice to dip in and out of. In general, the same set of questions were asked of each author. Several were asked what books they'd recommend for the President. I wonder what their responses would be now or if it's even still asked (this is a 2015 edition) . I liked Jhumpa Lahiri's thoughts about "immigrant fiction". the link here: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/09/08/books/review/jhumpa-lahiri-by-the-book.htm...

OrangeMooseReads Vonnegut! I'll admit I haven't read that one yet. Switch Bitch is a good one, a nice departure from his children's novels. 7y
Reviewsbylola Book Outlet is my weakness. 7y
batsy Barbara Pym! 😍 7y
ValerieAndBooks @OrangeMooseReads I still have a lot left of Vonnegut to get/read. Maybe also the encyclopedia you recently got 😊. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Reviewsbylola I think it's my weakness now too -- discovered it thanks to #Litsy!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @batsy I recently read another Pym (tagged) and was pleased to find this one in the same cover design series. Too bad it was the only Pym title on the site! 7y
batsy @ValerieAndBooks Oh, good score on the same cover editions! I think the only Pym I've read is Excellent Women and now plan to go through her books in publication order. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @batsy maybe that should be my plan after reading Excellent Women! But, so many books so little time, so it probably will be a long while. 7y
batsy @ValerieAndBooks Yes, this is the eternal problem! After reading books by Anita Brookner and Muriel Spark I also want to do the same with them 🤔😓 7y
ValerieAndBooks @batsy ah, yes! I have the same goal with Muriel Spark !! Now I feel that if you like both Pym and Spark, I probably would like Brookner as well-- I haven't read her yet (trying hard to fight the urge to see if Book Outlet has her). 7y
batsy @ValerieAndBooks She took by surprise, Brookner. I read her first book only after her death; people were writing lovely essays about her. Probably if I read her when I was younger, I would have misread her as dreary. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @batsy some authors are like that -- they speak to us emotionally only when the time is right. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @batsy also the synopsis of the book you tagged is intriguing-- definitely will look for it! 7y

#readingwomenmonth day 7: #booksaboutbooks
I reread Ex Libris every now and then especially that article about Marrying Libraries which always amuses me as my husband isn't really a reader (well he likes manga and comics and an occasional book).
Out of curiosity, what about your partner? Is your partner a book lover too?

WarpedSweetness My partner is not a reader of really anything. :-( 7y
Lauren_reading Mine reads sports articles. But I've learned to read while movies are on and he's learned that he better not interrupt me when I'm reading 😂 (edited) 7y
I-read-and-eat The BF is not a reader at all. He might get through one or two book a year but that's it. He loves buying me books though, so I don't mind 😉 7y
See All 49 Comments
StephanieMarie My partner reads maybe 4 books a year (and most of them after me incessantly telling him "you HAVE to read this") He prefers video games, but at least he reads a little bit! 7y
TrishB Mine reads everyday in bed - but no where else!! Dont really have similar taste- but some cross over books! 7y
diovival My guy is not much of a reader. He's into video games. 7y
Tillie My hubby of nearly 50 years only reads books about sports. Vince Lombardi is his favorite subject. No books in common. But he will listen to me read a chapter or two in the car or in bed when he cannot get away! 7y
SharonGoforth Haven't had a partner in awhile, but neither of the two I did have were readers. They also never understood my reading. Might have something to do with why they're no longer partners? 7y
Leniverse My partner reads. Not as much as me, and he likes to stick to one book at the time, but he's definitely a bookish person. Some of the best books I've read have been recs from him. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk My wife will tackle the big series that everyone is talking about at the moment, but that's about it as far as reading goes. 7y
Caterina My boyfriend reads, but not as obsessively as I do! He reads one book at a time and reads every book he buys immediately after buying it! I don't know how he does it! 😂 We have some books in common, and we have a book club going between the two of us. 😊 He also buys me books for gifts! 👍 7y
Caterina @SharonGoforth Haha sounds like a very good reason for them not to be partners anymore! 7y
RealBooks4ever No partner = more reading time for me! 🤣 7y
SharonGoforth @Caterina That's awesome that you and your boyfriend have your own book club! 7y
merelybookish My husband is an occasional reader. He prefers audiobooks and will read a range of genres. I appreciate that he understands my love of books even if he doesn't quite share it. 7y
Centique My husband and I met while students working in a bookshop. A strange job for him because he doesn't read! (Well, textbooks and articles and manuals but it's not the same!) Still I get the fun of telling him about what im reading and no fear of spoilers 😂 7y
minkyb Infrequent reader. But he does have to read medical journals regularly. 7y
Sarah83 No. Definitely not. But he sits in front of the computer most of the time he is at home, so I have my reading time 😉 7y
CherylDeFranceschi My partner and I decided we could never live together because collectively there would only be room for our books and not us or furniture or kitty! 7y
Zelma That's my favorite essay too! Mr. Z reads but much more slowly and sporadically that me. He did bring a lot of reference books into the marriage so we married our collections. However, he has regular subscriptions to a few magazines and journals that he keeps up with. (edited) 7y
rabbitprincess My BF doesn't really read; he says I read enough for the both of us 😂 He will occasionally read something space- or Mars-related, and he is working his way through The Walking Dead compendiums. 7y
Caterina @SharonGoforth Yeah, it's so much fun! It makes the long distance less awful too. 😊 We go back and forth choosing books! He's the first guy I've dated who's into books at all, and I think this time it's going to last. 😊 7y
AmandaL My husband isn't a reader. However, I've been able to get him to listen to some good audiobooks in the car when he drives to work. 7y
mjdowens Nope. My husband had not been a reader for the almost 26 years we have been married. Got him to wear sandals finally, but don't think the book reading is going to be doable. 7y

[DELETED] 3323341091 i predominately read nonfiction and i love philosophy, social science, mathematics, history, biographies, urban exploration - i am gushing, so i will stop. ☺️ 8y
Beholderess Food history, feminism and social justice, amusing microhistories, some biography (especially if it deals with the topics above and is narrated by the author), nature. And I actually read more nonfiction than fiction 8y

Loved this. Would read an interview or two before bed. Grew my to read list quite a lot. Love seeing what writers read. Look forward to the column every Sunday.

Love reading one or two of these before bedtime. Always ended adding titles to my stack. Tonight Curtis sittenfeld. Perfect since next book club pick is eligible.

'And if you were forced to name your one favorite author?
I'd have to say. "I'm sorry, but books don't work like that, and neither does music, Amen," and take the consequences.'

Can't say I've ever read any Mosley, but I like his view on comics. My beloved childhood reading wasn't only comics though. I was a ferocious reader and read everything I could get my hands on.

Gazed wistfully at this collection of book-centred interviews with authors a while back - excited to have found a pristine copy at a bargain $10 at Politics and Prose.
