The Sentence | Louise Erdrich

Pickpick

I loved this! Fabulous characters, booksellers at the center, an unwanted ghost…. plus Louise herself being a side character! I loved spending time with Tookie and her families, both work and home. In a lesser writer‘s hands, there could have been too much to juggle, but not here. My third Erdrich and possibly my favorite… 💕 #authoramonth @Soubhiville #readharder2023 #pastprompt #setinabookstore #bn2023challenge #indigenousauthor

BarbaraBB @Megabooks We‘re missing you ❤️ 1y
BarbaraBB I loved this book too. It‘s one that keeps lingering in my mind. 1y
Cortg Great job! I have never read this author and almost grabbed one of her books from a Little Free Library yesterday, but decided against it as I‘ve been trying to organize and get rid if stuff rather than bring it home right now 😩 1y

Prodigal Summer | Barbara Kingsolver
post image
Pickpick

A book about summer surrounded by my winter decor.🤣

This novel is a beautiful meditation on summer in the Appalachian mountains. At times I could almost smell the crisp mountain air, hear the rain in the trees & birdsong in the air. It‘s also a story about the forest, trees, wildlife, coyotes, moths, birds, life on a family farm. And love. Love in all its many forms.

I‘m so thankful to #ReadingAfrica22 &
#Booked2022 for giving me the extra push to finally pick up this book. In the vein of what Khaled Hosseini did for Afghan women, Abi Dare does the same for Nigerian girls in this heartbreaking yet hopeful novel. Adunni the 14yr old MC has experienced more trauma and sorrow in her young life, yet her optimism and joyful spirit is infectious. I‘m so glad I added audio narration to my Kindle purchase, 👇🏽

Cinfhen because hearing the Nigerian dialect & authentic pronunciation of the Igbo & Yoruba added so much richness to the story. So grateful for my #LoudBuddyRead friends for sharing their thoughts. 2y
RaeLovesToRead I'm only a fifth of the way in but I also was taken back to A Thousand Splendid Suns reading this far. Both books making me so so angry and conjuring the stifling and horrific realities of forced marriage. Which prompt are you using it for in #pop22? 2y

BarbaraBB Oooh sounds so good! 2y
squirrelbrain Great review… looking forward to reading the rest of it! 2y
emmaturi I really enjoyed this book! 2y
TrishB Despite all the awful things, I really enjoyed it! A successful buddy read 😁 2y
Cinfhen Yay @TrishB we‘re getting better at this buddyread thing xxx 2y
Cinfhen It was a very pleasant surprise @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @emmaturi Better than I expected 2y
TrishB Don‘t be jinxing it 😉😘 2y
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 next month we have this one @TrishB 2y
Librarybelle I really need to read this one! 2y
Cinfhen It‘s really good @Librarybelle I think you‘d like it 2y
Deblovestoread I loved Adunni! The author used a deft hand in showing the horrors of being a poor female in Nigeria while keeping her dream of having and using her voice alive. It would be hard to stay hopeful with such daily abuse. 2y
Cinfhen Adunni was the right blend of heart, humor & spunk. A great character @Kdgordon88 Im eager to continue #ReadingAfrica to discover experiences for others in different African countries 2y

I loved this book! If you‘re a fan of Shirley Jackson‘s Haunted House on the Hill, or du Maurier‘s Rebecca, I think you would really like this gothic novel set in Mexico.

Some of my favorite scenes were those that took place in the main character Noemí‘s dreams. The extreme misogyny and racism of the Doyle‘s, particularly Howard and his treatment of indigenous workers, was deeply disturbing.

BarbaraBB Your review is the first that makes me really want to read this. 3y
rachaich Interesting review... I really coujdnt get into it after thinking is adore it. 3y
alisiakae @rachaich I feel like I was in the right mood for it. A different day, and I may not have liked it as much. 3y

alisiakae @BarbaraBB It seems to be a hit or miss type of book. 3y
Cinfhen It was ok for me...it seemed to become a bit over the top towards the end but it was an entertaining read 3y
Cinfhen I don‘t think you‘d like this one @BarbaraBB but I could be wrong 🤓 3y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen That is probably why I haven‘t stacked it. I never felt tempted to read it until @4thhouseontheleft ‘s review 🙂 3y
alisiakae @Cinfhen The end was over the top, kind of the same way that Riley Sager‘s Lock Every Door‘s ending felt over the top. It didn‘t bother me, though, maybe because I liked all the 🍄 imagery! (edited) 3y
GreenGrl87 @4thhouseontheleft I‘m so glad you made that comparison lol Lock Every Door was so over the top!! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I have this and keep thinking I should just pick it up sooner than later! 3y

Listen, I think how you approach this book will be how much you end up enjoying this book because....It‘s straight up ridiculous AF!
It gets gory and gooey and all kinds of gross
And did I mention ridiculous AF!!!
#Booked21 #LatinxAuthor #Pop21 #PastPrompt Its a weak pick only because I‘ve read worse and I was curious to see how the story would play out and the cover is GORGEOUS ♥️

Cathythoughts Oh dear , I bailed on this one Cindy. Just did not hold my attention... you make an interesting point though about how you approach it 👍🏻 3y
Cinfhen I can see why you‘‘d bail @Cathythoughts 3y
Megabooks I don‘t think this is for me. 3y

Kalalalatja I keep going back and forth on this. Definitely not rushing to read it 3y
Lauram It reminded me of an early episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 3y
Cinfhen Definitely not for you @Megabooks I‘m pretty sure you‘d lose your eyeballs from all the eye rolling 😜if u go into it expecting kitsch @Kalalalatja you might enjoy but it‘s definitely #BorrowNotBuy hahaha 🤣 I could see that @Lauram 3y
TrishB @Cathythoughts I did too! No current desire to go back. 3y
KarenUK Think I‘ll skip it... 🤷‍♀️ 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Def skip it! It was a “pan” for me. 🙅🏼‍♀️ 3y
Reviewsbylola I just am not drawn to this one. Skipping it too! @Megabooks @Cinfhen @britt_brooke 3y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola Good call. 😉 The hype got me. Normally, I‘d have skipped it too. 3y

Case Histories: A Novel | Kate Atkinson

Mehso-so

#BelowZer00s #BuddyRead It took me awhile to get into this one. Wasn‘t wowed and probably won‘t continue on with the series. Saving most comments for next weeks discussion 🤓

Cinfhen I didn‘t hate it @4thhouseontheleft but it won‘t stay with me either 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y

BarbaraBB So much prompts again! I just started it and really like the beginning. Let‘s see where it goes! 4y
erzascarletbookgasm All those prompts ✔️ 👏 4y
Cinfhen Always a silver lining @erzascarletbookgasm @BarbaraBB 😇 4y
emilyhaldi Hmmm well maybe I‘ll skip this one after all. I‘m not big on mystery / thriller books so unless it was a standout story I probably won‘t like it... 4y
Cinfhen It felt pretty ordinary to me @emilyhaldi but so far that‘s an #unpopularopinion / won‘t hold it against you if you decide to skip the party😘You‘re always invited 4y
Ruthiella Is this your first book by Atkinson Cindy? 4y
Cathythoughts Oh dear. I loved the sense of humour & the characters & the plot ... did you like Jackson ? 4y
Kalalalatja I‘m not a big mystery/thriller fan either @emilyhaldi but I think I‘m going to give this a try anyway. It is always good to have a few #unpopularopinions in a buddy read discussion Cindy 😉 (edited) 4y
Cinfhen No, this isn‘t my first Atkinson @Ruthiella and I didn‘t like her other books either. Nope, wasn‘t taken with Jackson @Cathythoughts (edited) 4y
Ruthiella @Cinfhen I had the same questions as @Cathythoughts ...I also love Atkinson‘s sense of humor. So she‘s not the author for you- which isn‘t a bad thing at all since it helps weed out books on the TBR. 😀 4y
Cinfhen That really might be the case @Ruthiella although this book felt very different than the other book I‘ve read by her. I HATED 4y
Ruthiella @Cinfhen I thought George Saunders‘ 10th of December was OK but hated Lincoln in the Bardo. I felt a little bad- he‘s so beloved-but ultimately relieved. Now I can freely avoid his other books! 😜 4y
Cinfhen That‘s what makes reading so wonderful/ we all respond so differently to the same book @Ruthiella 💜 4y
Ruthiella @Cinfhen Totally!❤️ 4y
Librarybelle Sorry it was just so-so, but at least it covered a lot of challenges! 4y
Marina_h I would have loved to join the buddyread but I've read the book before and really didn't like it. So you're not alone with your #unpopularopinion I hope you'll have a great discussion about the book 4y
Cinfhen Thanks for having my back @Marina_h You can still join the aughts celebration and join in on the discussion 😁 4y
TrishB I think you‘re probably fine with KA now 😁 I only ever give an author two books!! 4y
Reviewsbylola Like I said before, I think I bailed on this one. Quickly. 😆 Now I‘m thinking my initial dislike wasn‘t unwarranted. It was a shocking bail for me too because it felt like this book was so highly praised so I was sure I would love it. 4y
Cinfhen I‘m not sure why this book earned all the praises??! 🤷🏼‍♀️If your week is busy don‘t feel pressured @Reviewsbylola still pop in and share your aughts photos though 😘 4y
