Past Lying | Val McDermid

Val is always a solid 4 star read for me.
I love her characters, their relationships and the very realistic growth they show.

Karen and her cold cases are quickly becoming my most favourite. The way Val structure these stories makes it page turners even knowing there's no life to save at the end.

This installment had a very intriguing plot and is set during COVID, so every normal thing had to be done slightly differently.

I love Colgan‘s books & Mure is one of my favorite settings. Warm, cozy, funny and just what I want and expect from this author.

I liked the idea of this book, but the execution did not deliver. This main character was difficult to feel engaged with, and the 1979 story line seemed very flat. Sad, because this could have been great.

I pretty much loved everything about this book! A solid second chance at love romance. And now I want to visit Amsterdam even more than I already did!

#pop25 - book that fills a 2024 prompt I‘d like to do over {a book set in a travel destination on my bucket list}

Sapphire I have always enjoyed Amsterdam. A very walkable city with great art, food from all over the world (fries on the street with Mayo not to be missed) and a book district!!! 3d
OriginalCyn620 @Sapphire the fries with mayo were mentioned a couple of times! As well as other delicious sounding foods! I really hope to make it there someday. 3d

Cléo is not a very likable woman but she‘s honest as a narrator and she only has one goal: becoming world famous. She succeeds (no spoiler) and for some inspiration and recharging she spends some time on an uninhabited island, reminiscing about her life.
It‘s an easy read and I enjoyed it but it‘s not as good as My Husband.

Well. That was…a lot. So much was packed into this story. Love, loss, grief, hope. They all show up in different forms multiple times throughout the novel. I cannot wait to discuss all the nuances with #camplitsy25. Definitely going to need to reread closer to discussion day.

Please check TW!

My pick for #FictionalTraveler June: #PlaceYoudLikeToVisit This (21st!) book in the Bakeshop Mystery series is set in Costa Rica, a place I‘ve always wanted to visit. 🇨🇷 I was supposed to go there once with Starbucks International but hand to cancel for a family emergency.

This book is also one of my June #Roll100 picks: #42 Any Mystery & is an ARC I just received, so I‘m excited to start it!

#Read2925

I think this is my final review of May, completed last week for #FictionalTraveler #SpanishSpeaking & the 6th of my #Roll100 picks for May (#4: Any BOTM). I‘ve put off reviewing it because I‘m still not sure how I feel about it. It‘s a quiet book about grief, depression & finding your life. Ruth leaves her job in NYC for a lake town in Guatemala, a place she felt most real in when she was there years before. It sort of meanders, ⬇️

DebinHawaii …which made me restless but there is a stark beauty in the writing. I think the challenge to me is I never felt close to Ruth‘s character or the characters in the relationships she formed with two different women. I did like the scenes set around Ruth‘s experiences as an expat & overall, I give it a soft pick. This was a #BOTM early release & doesn‘t publish elsewhere until July. 3w
