An Orchestra of Minorities
An Orchestra of Minorities | Chigozie Obioma
A heart-breaking story about a Nigerian poultry farmer who sacrifices everything to win the woman he loves, by Man Booker Finalist and author of The Fishermen, Chigozie Obioma. Set on the outskirts of Umuahia, Nigeria and narrated by a chi, or guardian spirit, AN ORCHESTRA OF MINORITIES tells the story of Chinonso, a young poultry farmer whose soul is ignited when he sees a woman attempting to jump from a highway bridge. Horrified by her recklessness, Chinonso joins her on the roadside and hurls two of his prized chickens into the water below to express the severity of such a fall. The woman, Ndali, is stopped her in her tracks. Bonded by this night on the bridge, Chinonso and Ndali fall in love. But Ndali is from a wealthy family and struggles to imagine a future near a chicken coop. When her family objects to the union because he is uneducated, Chinonso sells most of his possessions to attend a college in Cyprus. But when he arrives he discovers there is no place at the school for him, and that he has been utterly duped by the young Nigerian who has made the arrangements.. Penniless, homeless, and furious at a world which continues to relegate him to the sidelines, Chinonso gets further away from his dream, from Ndali and the farm he called home. Spanning continents, traversing the earth and cosmic spaces, and told by a narrator who has lived for hundreds of years, the novel is a contemporary twist of Homer's Odyssey. Written in the mythic style of the Igbo literary tradition, Chigozie Obioma weaves a heart-wrenching epic about destiny and determination..

“Nonso, you have destroyed yourself because of me,” Ndali says to her lover just before he sells his chicken farm and faces a new life in Cyprus — one filled with unexpected suffering, dealt cruelly by others. When Chinonso returns to Nigeria, there‘s nothing left of him. While one can understand Nonso for fighting fire with fire, Orchestra suggests grace is found in those who quietly accept their fate, who find others in need, and wail with them.

It‘s hard to rate this one because I appreciated the originality of it and the writing, but I found it difficult to actually ‘settle‘ into it; as daft as it might sound I knew I was reading a book rather than being immersed in the story itself. It has a lot of themes running through it, the main one being betrayal and I liked the protagonist but in general it was a so-so read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

As the narrative unfolds from one misfortune to the next we are asked to consider if Chinonso is the victim of fate or master of his own destruction. Despite the pleading from his Chi I struggled to sympathise with him (or anyone else). The writing felt heavy but it has received a lot of praise, this book just wasn‘t for me. 3/10

The writing of this book is at times truly beautiful and other times I find myself having reread paragraphs to make sense of them. I can‘t tell if I enjoy that about the book or if the slow-burn style of the book lets it down in some way. I still feel it‘s a book I must persist with to find out. #BookerBook

I really thought I‘d like this one, and it pains me to give it a Pan, but it just didn‘t work for me. What sounds like an interesting concept of the narrator being the MC‘s “chi” turns out to be an excuse for verbose lectures that slow up an already slow-burn story - it sits alongside Midnight‘s Children as a book in need of better editing. Meanwhile, the MC himself is a man-child who blames everyone else for his own stupid decisions

This was a very frustrating read for me. I think I could have really liked it, and at times I did, it‘s just that I felt like my shoes kept getting stuck in the mud. It is slow, but not the kind that is quietly building tension or atmosphere, it‘s the kind where you feel stuck in details and are just dying for the story to get moving again. #BookerPrize Shortlist 6/6

This wasn‘t an easy book to read - it‘s written in Igbo traditional style so the story is told from the POV of the MC‘s chi (or soul).

It‘s also quite a depressing read, about a man who is rejected by his girlfriend‘s family, due to his social status, and all of the terrible things that befall him as a result.

I wouldn‘t say I enjoyed it, but I am glad that I read it....

This is a book which drew me into the story of a Nigerian man Chinoso whose chance encountee with a woman who is about to throw herself of a bridge changes the course of life completely. I was captured by his trials and tribulations which are narrated by his igbo spirit who has visited many lives over centuries. I loved the folklore and culture and feel that if it won the booker it would show that the prize is not purely American/ British centric

Cinfhen I agree!! There was something very unique to this story and the storytelling was SO GOOD 5y
Tamra Yesterday I downloaded the audio! 😀 5y
rwmg I don't think the Booker is US/UK centric. There have been winners from Trinidad, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, India and Jamaica. 5y
See All 8 Comments
andrew61 @Tamra look forward to seeing your comments. 5y
andrew61 @rwmg you may be right but certainly the strange decision to introduce America to the competition has reduced the ability to have a more nationally diverse competition with 2 of the last 3 winners being from US. Thus spaces on the longlist and shortlist are taken up by American novels which historically might have gone to other areas. Certainly the last indian winner was a while ago and african even longer. My impression, and i may be wrong. 5y
rwmg @andrew61 Does including Americans reduce diversity because Americans write better books or have better publicists or a larger publishing industry with more authors or what? 5y
andrew61 Not sure about the better books. But it does reduce the opportunity for authors from countries which otherwise may have made the list from gaining recognition. The mbi for example does allow exploration of new writers, id have never have read a book in translation from oman otherwise. Im sure ultimately the booker may be more about the power of publishers but an interesting debate. I'll look forward to the result. 5y

My second of the shortlist and i have 2 others in reserve at library. Im halfway through and i am living every misfortune that falls upon poor Chinoso so this scene where a group of children mob him mistaking him for Ronaldinho and he then is overwhelmed by sadness just floored me.

First, this really captured me. Beautiful setting. And even though I could see the accidents coming, still they got to me. Even as I learned of Chinonso‘s flaws, still I was taken in by his elegant, if limited, restraint.

The rest is 👇

Graywacke Arguably a contemporary Igbo Odyssey, there is also a lot of Dante (and maybe Virgil?). Chinonso‘s story is told by his Chi, an Igbo guardian spirit of a sort who can see his thoughts, see the world around him, understand things his host, Chinonso, can‘t. But the spirit can only help him so much, mainly he is a witness. This Chi watches him stumble into a beautiful paradise and then watches it all fall apart. Recommended! (edited) 5y

“But I must render it all in as much detail as I can” - oh, how I wish you wouldn‘t. This was too long, with too many digressions which took me out of a story I had trouble enough following. Obioma‘s writing is beautiful, but it wasn‘t enough to save the experience for me. It is a shame, because I loved The Fishermen

First book from #booker2019 shortlist finished! Unfortunately, I hated it. Verbose and trying way too hard to be tragic and dramatic. Also, the author often seemed more concerned with demonstrating Igbo mythology than creating sympathetic characters. Finally, any comparisons to The Odyssey are really missing the mark. There was some lovely prose in places, but it was often hard to find among the weeds. 2⭐️

DGRachel I find that I struggle with Man Booker nominees. I think I enjoyed one that I read last year and seriously hated a couple of the others. I find it useful to help select books I shouldn't waste my time on, as I know there's a good chance they won't be for me. 😉 5y

While I enjoyed this initially, I lost interest after the first few chapters & by the time I got to chapter 6, I was dreading picking this up. It‘s either not the right time or not the right book for me, so it‘s going back to the library.

Redwritinghood You‘re tempting me. I‘m reading this right now and am also not feeling it. I‘m reading it because it‘s on the Booker longlist. I‘m only at the beginning, though, so will probably give it a little more time. 5y

See All 13 Comments
Lindy @TrishB I hope you enjoy it. I usually have a good idea before I even start a book if it‘s going to hit the right note for me. I was wrong in this case. 🤷‍♀️ 5y
Simona For me, this is a perfectly crafted story in terms of structure, the choice of the narrator, themes ... but at the end I had a big problem with the narrator. His voice was too manipulative and inconsistent in the different situations. 5y
Lindy @Simona Interesting comments. I like the choice of narrator too, even though I had to wrap my head around the concept of a chi having such limited perspective. 5y
Graywacke Interesting. I just got this on audio, because of the Booker list. Started this morning. I‘ll try to be patient. ( @Simona - also interesting to read your comment) 5y
Simona @Graywacke I‘m really curious about your thoughts, sometimes audiobook could be better choice. 5y
Simona @Lindy Limited perspective was part of my problem, because further in the story it turns out that this isn‘t so limited and author uses narrator‘s omniscience for where he wants to take the story. 5y
Lindy @Simona @Graywacke I agree about audio format: sometimes a good performance pulls me through a book I might otherwise have given up on. 5y
Graywacke @Simona @Lindy since I‘m only about 45 minutes in (out of 18 hours), I can only say I like the narrator so far. Strong Nigerian accent adds some charm. 5y

From perspective of the writing technique this book is perfect. Interesting story, perfect blend of old/traditional beliefs with the modern world, dynamic structure, deep characterization, main themes runs smoothly through the narration ... but I didn‘t liked the narrator - chi, spiritual guide. His almost pleading undertones in his voice was too dramatic for me, although I think that the narrator, as a plot device, is a brilliant choice. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

It‘s an extraordinary journey this man goes on , his chi - his gaurdian spirit. ..narrates the story & refers to the farmer ( MC ) as his host , there is no human narrator.
I felt the story very strongly.

Cathythoughts @Ms_T it‘s not available in the bookshops here .. I got it on kindle ... I don‘t know what I was expecting , but I said I‘d give it a go. I listened to this author in interview on YouTube.. he‘s very interesting & the book has stolen me away 5y

I went on a bit of a #manbooker binge at the library. Which to read first??

Clare_Riley I‘m listening to The Wall at the moment and really enjoying it. I‘ve read My Sister and I liked it very much, but I am puzzled as to why it‘s making it on to so many of these book award long lists - I do think that there are other books out there that could be do with the exposure as well. Obioma‘s book is on my tbr list, it looks really interesting! 5y
Cathythoughts Exciting! Look forward to your thoughts- I only tried Serial Killer & bailed #unpopularopinion for sure 5y
emilyhaldi @Clare_Riley I ended up starting the Wall yesterday. While it‘s pretty entertaining and a quick read, I do NOT understand why it‘s on the long list... the writing isn‘t impressing me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y

emilyhaldi @Cathythoughts I‘ve had some reservations about that one which is why I put it off for so long. But seeing it on the long list motivated me to give it a try... we‘ll see! 🤞🏻 5y
Cathythoughts Just started Orchestra... better than I thought , more readable... early days, we‘ll see. I look forward to your thoughts whenever you get there 👍🏻 5y
emilyhaldi That's good to hear!! @Cathythoughts I think I'm putting that one off til last bc of its size 😅 but hoping I can get to it soon... 🤞🏻 5y

#friyayintro @howjessreads

1. Recommended this beauty out today
2. I saw the live broadcast of the Lehman Trilogy in the cinema yesterday and it was breathtakingly good. I recommend it sooooo much if it‘s being broadcast near you in August
3. Magnum ice creams, slightly burnt home barbecued hot dogs with too much ketchup, pimms and fruity cider
4. Five, I guess it‘s a pretty average number of cousins to have?
5. Will do 💖

Megabooks Too much ketchup is essential! 5y
sudi Magnum ice creams are the best! 😋🙌 5y

What a fantastic book! I was completely sucked in by the tale of Nonso. Honestly, I‘ve seen and read movies and books that purport to be based on the Odyssey. This book, however, felt like the Odyssey.

Pedrocamacho Man, the ending is very dark. I did not see that coming. In fact, in my mind, the end fizzles a bit. 5y

3.5/5
The writing and story is very interesting and original. Being narrated by his Chi (guardian spirit) was a unique perspective. But parts of that got repetitive in my opinion. I loved the Nigerian setting. Overall I enjoyed the story and there is a lot beautiful language throughout. Reading this authors writing you need to brace yourself, it will be an emotional ride.

Just picked up some #bookmail from a sweet Litten ❤️

Thank you so much @Cinfhen for your kindness and generosity - I‘m beyond excited for the tagged book, since I loved The Fishermen. It will be interesting to see what I think of the Fuller book, but I‘m hopeful 🤞

While some authors write books, the truly gifted tell stories. Chigozie Obioma is one of those rare storytellers. Using African myth and beloved proverbs, Obioma crafts a spectacular tale of destiny and fulfillment. It‘s an epic quest that will leave you spent and aching, Although it was a bit too long, this book was still stellar and a 4 star read. Second book completed for #BFC Day4

Cinfhen Loved it @LibrarianRyan THANK YOU 😘 (edited) 6y
Cinfhen I‘ll send it out later this week with the other book @Kalalalatja 😁 6y

RohitSawant Sounds fascinating! Great review! 6y
KateFulfordAuthor Great review thanks 6y
Cinfhen This book is too “big” for me to describe properly @KateFulfordAuthor @rohit-sawant but I‘m in awe of what Obioma created. Definitely read this one, especially if you enjoyed The Fisherman. There‘s some hints of his debut in these pages 6y
KarenUK I loved Obioma‘s debut, both in print and on audio as a re-read for a bookclub. I think I‘ll try this one on audio because it has the same Nigerian narrator as the Fisherman, and his voice is soooooo beautiful! 💕🎧 6y
Cinfhen I think this will be fantastic on #audio @KarenUK let me know 💕 6y
Cathythoughts Love your review! I just started this as it‘s been brought to our attention on Booker long list... it‘s not my usual , but I find I‘m reading on ... your review is encouraging ♥️👍🏻 5y
Cinfhen Thanks @Cathythoughts I really did LOVE this book!! I hope it makes the shortlist 🤞🏼🤞🏼 5y
Cathythoughts Hi Cindy , do you think this one qualifies for #pocmcparanormal .... as it is his chi that narrates the book ??? I really want to play by the rules.. and can‘t decide if this fits the prompt? Honest answer ?? Thanks Cathy. 5y
Cinfhen Hmmmm, I hadn‘t thought of that @Cathythoughts but I think it does work!!!! Well done!!! Brilliant!! Hope you‘re loving this book as much as I did‼️ (edited) 5y

#StarTrekSummerMay Sometimes #TheEnemy is only yourself. This book is so good. I‘m loving the Nigerian folklore and the proverbs scattered throughout the pages. Chinonso is a simple man, with a big heart and pleasing nature. Through a series of unexpected events his life becomes a story of calamity. Equal parts hilarity and heartbreak. I‘m halfway in and totally hooked.

Cinfhen Thanks for gifting me this ARC @LibrarianRyan I think it‘s my favorite so far!!!!!! 6y
Megabooks #stacking!! I love Nigerian literature!! 6y
Cinfhen Have you read this book yet @Lola ???? I think you‘d really like it. I‘m not sure if you‘ll have the patience for it @Megabooks it‘s a bit of a slow burn. Let me know if you give it a try 👍🏻😊❤️ (edited) 6y
