I must confess, I borrowed this from Libby under the impression that it was going to be a cozy fantasy novel (I was looking for Isabelle Nagg and the pot of basil) BUT in some respects this worked out very well because this was completely delightful and I probably would have passed it by if I‘d stopped to read the blurb.

This is a collection of anecdotes from Oliver‘s time working as a antiquarian bookseller in London.

BooksandCoffee4Me Oooooh, I‘m going to add it! 2d

I felt like this was a solid, well put together about the history and evolution of American bookshops. Did you know Benjamin Franklin had a bookshop? Did you know there was once a fascist bookshop in LA, that sold and promoted propaganda? This book is full of interesting facts. It shows how the ways in which we get books have changed over time—from street books, to indie stores, to big corporations, to billionaires like Amazon‘s Bezos. ⬇️

JenniferEgnor It also shows how bookshops have been and are, liberal spaces, promoting critical thinking, the advancement of our values, and activism. Books were not always available to everyone, and what was available was once very limited. Reading spaces were not always accessible to all people, either. Historically, bookshops have been safe spaces for marginalized folks, and remain so today. Right now, the right to read is being threatened like⬇️ 2w
JenniferEgnor never before. This is something to remember as you read this book. Books, libraries, and reading spaces are just as essential now, as they always have been. Books save lives. Many people would do well to realize that. 2w

An informative and emotional history of one of my favorite indie bookstore: The King‘s English in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I grew up visiting this store, and it was a true delight to learn how it came to be and how it operates. I really appreciated reading of the difficulties they‘ve dealt with. And many big name authors have visited! Also many, many book lists to peruse and take notes on! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I listened to this around the time of Independent Bookstore Day, & it got me in the mood for visiting the indies in my state. BTW, 5 of the indies in my general area did a bookstore crawl, such a good idea!
Really liked this book, enjoyed the history of bookshops, learned a lot (had no idea about the Nazi bookstores), & would love to visit some of the ones featured. Highly recommend

Dipped into this for five months. I always liked it. I don‘t know if I could have read it in one go, but i am now considering reading the sequel.

Going to be very hot here in my neck of the woods this weekend so planning on staying indoors under the ac and dig into these two titles.

Well… I finally did it. ☝️ I canceled my Audible membership. Sucks, because I took full advantage of premium status; the Great Courses lectures were one of the best things I had ever come across. But the amount of ‘included-with-membership‘ books made it possible for me to save a huge chunk of titles purchased with credits. Which will give me some time before I (most likely) move to LibroFM.

I had the best time with my sister participating in the NEO Indie Bookstore Crawl this weekend. We drove 100+ miles, shopped in 7 stores, went to a Scholastic-style book fair at a music venue, and had fun shopping with friendly readers (my favorite kind of people). I can‘t wait to do it again next year!

BookNAround Yay! Hope you had a good day with your last six stores! I went to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day at Park Road Books and bought an obscene number of books. 😂 2mo
peanutnine @BookNAround nice! We had a great day. I didn't buy too many today, but my purchases from the month as a whole were pretty obscene 🤭😂 2mo
