The Orphan's Tale
The Orphan's Tale | Pam Jenoff
A powerful novel of friendship set in a traveling circus during World War II, The Orphan's Tale introduces two extraordinary women and their harrowing stories of sacrifice and survival Sixteen-year-old Noa has been cast out in disgrace after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier and being forced to give up her baby. She lives above a small rail station, which she cleans in order to earn her keep When Noa discovers a boxcar containing dozens of Jewish infants bound for a concentration camp, she is reminded of the child that was taken from her. And in a moment that will change the course of her life, she steals one of the babies and flees into the snowy night. Noa finds refuge with a German circus, but she must learn the flying trapeze act so she can blend in undetected, spurning the resentment of the lead aerialist, Astrid. At first rivals, Noa and Astrid soon forge a powerful bond. But as the facade that protects them proves increasingly tenuous, Noa and Astrid must decide whether their friendship is enough to save one anotheror if the secrets that burn between them will destroy everything.

This was a bit of a let down. The story was good but the writing style left a lot to be desired. The dialogue was simple and stilted and the characters weren‘t really well developed. #litsyAtoZ

During the reign of Nazis, there were a handful of German circuses who were still allowed to travel and perform. Some circus owners hid Jews who, in return, were trained as performers with name changes and documentation. This is brilliantly done historical fiction.

So much of life in pictures on social media is beauty but reality is very different. My joy today was being able to listen to this book while completing a chore. ~ This book was beautifully told and elegantly read. Yet, the stories of suffering during WWII were ugly & painful and sad & agonizing. I liked the combination of circus life and Nazi persecution. I was surprised yet pleased with the ending.

Phenomenal. This book was so rich, full of characters, culture, heart wrenching moments that made your heart break in two. This book really got to me in the best way. Circus life in the time of hitlers reign. It was so beyond something I‘d ever imagine with my own brain, I love when a book brings me somewhere I‘d never go on my own. Highly recommend.

A different take on the Holocaust story. A German traveling circus hides Jews. the story focuses more on the day-to-day life in the circus. The author does not go into a lot of detail about the atrocities committed by the Nazis. Overall, I found it an interesting story.

I love reading WWII historical fiction and had high hopes for this. IMHO, it sorely missed the mark. The premise was so interesting, with a circus still running during the war, and the circus master hiding several Jews in his crew. There is so much missed opportunity with this story and it read more like a sappy romantic melodrama - highly disappointing, as WWII was filled with plenty of drama and the characters here make so many unrealistic ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Choices that it left me scratching my head in a few places. I didn‘t hate it, but the characters were not overly compelling and it took me 3 weeks to finish it. 2⭐️ #historicalfiction #WWII 9mo
JulAnna Thanks for the review! I read one of her earlier books, The Kommandant‘s daughter, quite a few years ago. I didn‘t like it at all, but many people other people seemed to. I think I had some of the same complaints with that one as you do here. At least I know now to steer clear! 😊 9mo

Pam Jenoff writes the story of two women trying to survive Hitler‘s Europe. Noa and Astrid have absolutely nothing in common. They‘ve both had troubles with men, compounded by the deadly prejudices of the time. In order to survive, they team up as aerialists in a traveling circus. Noa is naive and Astrid is prickly, and the writing is more melodramatic than I like. It‘s a “borrow don‘t buy.”

Described as Water for Elephants meets The Nightingale, I was hesitant to read this book because both titles are so unforgettable. As I‘ve said before, this is often a marketing ploy that leads to disappointment for the reader. That being said, I was intrigued. This book is a solid 3.5 stars for me, definitely not the same 5 star calibre as either book it claims to be a mash-up of, but a good read nonetheless.

I really wanted to love this book, but somehow I never seem to connect with circus books. This one was no different. The plot was catchy enough that I finished it, but something about the writing was lacking. I never felt an emotional connection or investment in any of the characters, which made it hard to care what happened. There was also a lot of annoyingly unnecessary telling in the writing. Ah well, not for me.

Ticket to ride, combined with the "I don't know why she's ridin' so high..." made me think of this WW2 historical novel where 16-year-old Noa, who lives above a German railroad station, rescues a Jewish baby from a boxcar bound for a concentration camp. To hide them both in a traveling circus, she has to learn the trapeze act from Astrid, the unfriendly lead aerialist.
This book brought out all of the feels. ?????

I really liked the story idea, and the characters were interesting. However, the plot was plodding, and there were so many sections where the author was really trying to paint a picture that dragged, because they weren't integral to the story. The sections about being an aerialist were well done, and those really saved the book for me. A solid so-so, 3 stars.
