Into the Drowning Deep is my favorite book. I‘ve never read the prequel, so I finally got it and devoured it in one sitting. I‘m glad I read ITDD before RITD, since the prequel gives away the twists. It‘s heartbreaking to read, and so so good, but I would definitely recommend reading AFTER Into the Drowning Deep.

Mermaids may not be what you think. The crew of the Atargatis (which is a great name for a ship in this book) has been hired for a mockumentary about discovering real mermaids. No one, not crew, not those hired by the network has survived. But footage exists and it's horrible. Mira Grant is the name under which Seanan McGuire writes horror and she is as skilled in it as she is in fantasy.

Looking forward to another great year of #Roll100! Doing separate audiobook and print book lists again.

In 2023, I finished 25 and bailed on 6 audiobooks and finished 23 and bailed on 6 print books (from the list whether or not they were chosen). The storygraph tells me 31 finished were in the actual month.

I couldn't relate to characters, I felt like all that action and fast pacing made characters to lack some depth.

I loved the atmosphere! This was a mixed media book and I loved that too.

This wasn't really special as a story to me, but still entertaining.

I love the horror fiction that Seanan McGuire writes as Mira Grant. This novella about an expedition looking for mermaids is so spooky and scary!

A short, quick horror read about mermaids

On my way back from Denver, this was the 1st of 2 novella audios that I listened to. This is the prequel to Into the Drowning Deep, a book full of murderous mermaids. We follow the cruise ship Artagatis and it‘s doomed mission. There is something to be said about knowing that everyone in the book will die but still writing all the people as if there‘s still hope which double damns you when they die. I love Mira‘s use of science and her 👇🏼

I picked this up because I heard (on litsy) that you should read this prequel novella before reading Into the Deep, which I just got from the library. This was an interesting, quick read. A mockumentary crew goes on a ship to search for “mermaids”, thinking they aren‘t real. Boy were they wrong!

Hours 5 and 6 of #Deweys24HourReadathon had me listening to the tagged audiobook while doing some audiopuzzling and taking a walk around town, including a stop at the cute library. So glad someone told me to listen to this before starting Into the Drowning Deep and that it was available on Hoopla!

So glad I read this! I loved Into The Drowning Deep and wanted to read Grant's novella that came before it. Admittedly I love ITDD a bit more because of the depth (hah!) of the story and characters, but if you're not willing to commit to 450 pgs this is a solid alternative option. Or if you love the idea of killer mermaids then read both 😉 #screamathon

This was a crazy little novella. I wasn't sure what to expect. Sometimes I go into things blind based on the author or recommendations and this was an example of that. This was wild. A documentary on mermaids turns out to be more than anyone expected. The team was all set to create a hoax, but got the surprise of their life. I'm definitely going to read the follow-up, Into the Drowning Deep.

Whether or not you read Into the Drowning Deep first, you know right off the bat that everyone is going to die, but I still found myself on the edge of my seat waiting to see how that all went down. I would have liked the opportunity to know these characters a little better and to spend a little more time witnessing these horrors on the sea, but for what this little novella is, it's great. Check out this relevant library bookmark too! 🐙🧜‍♀️

Well this was a fun, quick read. As the prequel to Into the Drowning Deep, it provides the events of the Atargatis‘s fateful voyage to the Mariana Trench.

The audiobook narrator did a pretty decent job, but sometimes she would inexplicably slow down when she was reading ASL dialogue. Weird.

I love Mira Grant/Seanan McGuire‘s books. And this was 3 hours well spent.

Prequel to Into the Drowning Deep, that could be read first without any loss of storyline. Mermaids are real, and they are Apex predators that will eat your face! Amazingly plausible horror novella. Too much fun! Highly recommend if it sounds like your thing.

Mermurder time again! An entertainment company sends out a “documentary” crew to prove the existence of mermaids, even if they have to bring their own.

Now, usually, I hate prequels. Knowing where the characters end up, there‘s only so much dramatic irony I can handle in a story. This is one of the few exceptions that answers questions I had and ones I didn‘t know I had, as well as providing me with interesting/diverse characters. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Killer mermaids for the win. I listened to this after already having listened to Into the Drowning Deep...so I knew the deal with the mermaids but it was still ultimately a diabolical foray into the deep waters of the Mariana Trench. The characters are rather unlikeable, so I wasn't sad to see them come to their dastardly end (not really a spoiler).

This #novella is the best, most scientifically realistic portrayal of “mermaids“ I've ever seen, to the point that I found myself thinking multiple times while reading it, “I can't believe mermaids are real and want to kill us.“ I also loved the diversity of the cast; the short but imposing female captain, her deaf first mate, and the tetchy gay scientist couple. Top notch stuff. #mermaids #thrillers #horror

I‘ve been listening to The Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks on Audible but I‘ve just finished The Blood Mirror. I have a week until the next book comes out so I guess now is a perfect time to listen to some novellas that I‘ve been hoarding on Audible. I really enjoyed Into the Drowning Deep. So far, this prequel is fine.

Finished Rolling in the Deep and started Into the Drowning Deep in audio for my drives to and from PA.
I've read both books already, but am really enjoying them now in audio. However, the narrator for each book pronounced the ship's name "Atargatis" differently. It's a bit annoying.

Finished this prequel to Into the Drowning Deep. It is just as enjoyable! There is a great atmosphere and sense of tension that is created. I LOVE these mermaids they are vicious and believable as a natural evolution/adaptation. Which helps to make it creepier!

This has been a very frustrating couple of weeks for me, reading wise. Reading slumps suck.
Mira Grant's Newflesh series is my favorite series of all-time, but I haven't liked anything else I've tried by her (as Grant or as Seanan McGuire). But, this sounds unique and it's a novella. Hopefully it will not disappoint.

My dastardly group of readers helped narrow down my choices, and we are picking killer mermaids. ‘Rolling in The Deep‘ gives you a little ‘bloody‘ taste of what is to come in ‘Into The Drowning Deep‘, and gives some background to the novel. Plus I had to show everyone the KILLER journal I‘ve picked out! 💀

So I knew this novella was about killer mermaids, and yet the creepy factor still caught me off guard. Can't wait to start Into the Drowning Deep! 🌊🦈💦
