The Courtiers
The Courtiers: Splendor and Intrigue in the Georgian Court at Kensington Palace | Lucy Worsley
5 posts | 3 read | 15 to read
Kensington Palace is now most famous as the former home of Diana, Princess of Wales, but the palace's glory days came between 1714 and 1760, during the reigns of George I and II . In the eighteenth century, this palace was a world of skulduggery, intrigue, politicking, etiquette, wigs, and beauty spots, where fans whistled open like switchblades and unusual people were kept as curiosities. Lucy Worsley's The Courtiers charts the trajectory of the fantastically quarrelsome Hanovers and the last great gasp of British court life. Structured around the paintings of courtiers and servants that line the walls of the King's Staircase of Kensington Palace-paintings you can see at the palace today-The Courtiers goes behind closed doors to meet a pushy young painter, a maid of honor with a secret marriage, a vice chamberlain with many vices, a bedchamber woman with a violent husband, two aging royal mistresses, and many more. The result is an indelible portrait of court life leading up to the famous reign of George III , and a feast for both Anglophiles and lovers of history and royalty.

#letstraveljuly @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620 British Courtiers definitely had lives of #leisure. Also - I love Lucy Worsley and will read anything she writes and watch any documentary she‘s in.

Cathythoughts Funny how books do that 🙃💕💕 6y
julesG @Cathythoughts I swear they'll have a nice home here. Much better than in the crammed second hand shop. 😁 6y

Weaponxgirl Lucy worsley! I love her so much! 6y
julesG @Weaponxgirl Me too. I love her BBC documentaries about the British royals of the past. 6y
Weaponxgirl @julesG I can watch anything she‘s presenting. Even if I didn‘t think I was interested beforehand 6y
julesG @Weaponxgirl I'm always annoyed by the German voice over. My brain gets distracted by the twisted translations that sometimes change the meaning of what Worsley said (translations always being interpretations). I wish, I could either watch British TV, or switch off the German dubbing. 6y
Weaponxgirl That sounds horrible! My brain would explode 6y
Moony Oh I currently reading illuminae too. I'm curious about your opinion 6y
Crazeedi This is a new author to me! Looks very interesting ! I'm going to have to check out both these #blameitonlitsy 😉😊 6y
Mdargusch I don‘t blame you! 6y

Okay, Littens...#makemereadit ! Depending upon the month, I average between 8-12 books read. I do know I have book discussion books I must read, which I did include in this stack. Most of the books pictured here are parts of challenges.

Vote as often as you like, and I‘ll periodically post this to keep the votes coming. Thanks again for this fun idea, @TheReadingMermaid !

The tagged book is the bottom book.

Kaye I don‘t know how this works. Does the book with the most votes get chosen to read next ? I vote for A Separate Peace. 6y
Librarybelle @Kaye The Book with the most votes is the first to read in August, then the 2nd most voted Book, and so on. It kind of ranks your to read stack for the month of August. 6y
Kaye Oh, I see... Good luck , and happy Reading. 6y
Librarybelle Haha, @Pruzy ...not sure about down voting, but I appreciate your thoughts on the book! I‘ve heard mixed reviews on it, and it‘s been languishing forever on my to read pile, so might as well read it in August. 🙂 6y
