The Brutal Telling
The Brutal Telling: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel | Louise Penny
144 posts | 201 read | 2 reading | 41 to read
Chaos is coming, old son. With those words the peace of Three Pines is shattered. As families prepare to head back to the city and children say goodbye to summer, a stranger is found murdered in the village bistro and antiques store. Once again, Chief Inspector Gamache and his team are called in to strip back layers of lies, exposing both treasures and rancid secrets buried in the wilderness. No one admits to knowing the murdered man, but as secrets are revealed, chaos begins to close in on the beloved bistro owner, Olivier. How did he make such a spectacular success of his business? What past did he leave behind and why has he buried himself in this tiny village? And why does every lead in the investigation find its way back to him? As Olivier grows more frantic, a trail of clues and treasures from first editions of Charlotte's Web and Jane Eyre to a spider web with the word "WOE" woven in itlead the Chief Inspector deep into the woods and across the continent in search of the truth, and finally back to Three Pines as the little village braces for the truth and the final, brutal telling.

These are my go-to re-reads when I can‘t concentrate on anything else. Considering a complete re-read of the series now that I know another one is coming this fall.

Suzze I have an advance copy of the new one. I am about 1/4 into it, and love it, as always! 1mo
Bookwormjillk @Suzze good to hear! 1mo
Aimeesue Three Pines is such a great escape, even if it is a bit murder-y. 1mo

Seriously - anyone with any sense should definitely avoid Three Pines. It does not matter how picturesque it is 😂

These books definitely push the boundaries of believability and the motivations of humans, and all the characters are that little bit *extra* including the too-perfect Gamache… and yet I can‘t stop reading. Delightful for a cold afternoon.

Number 5 of the Three Pines series was a dark tale of secrets and regret. I have a feeling this plotline isn't over yet. The books just keep getting better and better! And yes, it's fireplace weather today, with wind and snow ❄️🌨 Nevermind that it hit 80° last week ☀️ 🙄

1. This one is a little bittersweet due to the outcome of the case…
2. It‘s the only season with its own scent.
3. So autumnal it‘s ridiculous.

Another great Inspector Gamache mystery set in Three Pines. This one seemed a bit sadder and more personal to the inhabitants of Three Pines, and also with a lengthier back story to the events that took place.

Penny is a masterful storyteller, and in this installment of the Chief Inspector Gamache series, she adds so much darkness to the storyline. This one is a lot heavier than the others thus far in the series. And yet, there are aspects that are achingly beautiful, touching on human imperfections and the turn of a phrase that brings tears to the eyes. So well done.

I like how this one came together, and I like the juxtaposition of comfort and threat. It's still strange that there's so much murder in this little town, but I like how Penny and her characters acknowledge this. There's not much else I can say without potentially spoiling things, so I'll leave it at that.

Louise Looking forward to the film series they are going to make of these books. It will be fun to see Louise Penny‘s marvelous characters brought to life on the screen! 3y
ImperfectCJ @Louise Alfred Molina is an interesting choice for Gamache. I wouldn't have thought of him on my own, but I can see him doing well in the role. I don't have Prime so I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD and I can get it from my library (if they get a North America version of the DVD...Dublin Murders still isn't available). 3y
Louise Oh, I‘ll have to look out for Dublin Murders! Hadn‘t heard of that series. You could get a free trial of Prime, perhaps, and have a marathon Gamache weekend! 3y

Oh, I loved this book. I waited to read it over Labor Day Weekend, when it‘s set, and I‘m so glad I did. And I didn‘t rush through it. These books are meant to be savored. I‘ve seen other reviewers say this is when the series really starts, and I‘m starting to see why. Lyrical and lovely, sad and terrifying, and at times so very, very funny.

This morning, I have a rare opportunity of all four of my boys together with me. Today also marks the 10th Gotcha Anniversary for #Zeke . I cannot believe it was 10 years ago I found him as a tiny kitten in my car engine. Love my reading buddies!

While this was not my favorite book in the Detective Gamache series, I still enjoyed it. I appreciated the history interwoven throughout. The author based the book on a real-life Canadian artist, her work on Haida Gwaii, and the people native to those islands. I recommend this series for readers who enjoy both mysteries and cozy small-town plots.

In keeping with my plan to read these in the season in which they‘re set, I should have read this about a month ago. But it wasn‘t available then! I‘m ignoring everything else on my #OctoberTBR so I can return it early for the next patron in line and while we‘re still kinda sorta in that summer-to-fall transition time. I‘m just a few chapters in, and already I want to punch Beauvoir in the face. Again. Does he eventually get nicer? #fallisbooked

Wow.

Until this book, I'd been reading this series strictly for the mystery. And there's plenty of that here. But what I didn't expect was all of the hidden meanings & discussions that could come from this book. Very rarely do I want to re-read a book immediately after finishing it to catch all of the nuances. That's exactly what I want to do now.

A rare ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wow! It is the telling of the story even more than the solving of the puzzle that draws you in and holds you in it‘s grip. I fought the answer all the way through. And, I‘m not saying more lest I ruin even one morsel for you.

Cuddles with my youngest as I finish this amazing book. I think it was my favourite so far (#5 of Inspector Gamache books). The ending just tore me up and I am still trying to figure out if I really believe what happened. Anyone who loves mystery novels should read this series. It‘s right up there with Agatha Christie. And being Canadian, I really appreciate the beautiful descriptions of my country. 5/5 ⭐️
