Tender is the Night
Tender is the Night | F. Scott Fitzgerald
Tender Is the Night is a novel by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was his fourth and final completed novel, and was first published in Scribner's Magazine between JanuaryApril, 1934 in four issues. The title is taken from the poem "Ode to a Nightingale" by John Keats. Tender Is the Night is often ranked with Fitzgerald's best work. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked the novel 28th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Two versions of this novel are in print. The first version, published in 1934, uses flashbacks; the second, revised version, prepared by Fitzgerald's friend and noted criticMalcolm Cowley on the basis of notes for a revision left by Fitzgerald, is ordered chronologically and was first published posthumously in 1948. Critics have suggested that Cowley's revision was undertaken due to negative reviews of the temporal structure of the first version of the book. In 1932, Fitzgerald's wife Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald was hospitalized for schizophrenia in Baltimore, Maryland. The author rented the "la Paix" estate in the suburb of Towsonto work on this book, the story of the rise and fall of Dick Diver, a promising young psychoanalyst, and his wife, Nicole, who is also one of his patients. It was Fitzgerald's first novel in nine years, and the last that he would complete. While working on the book he several times ran out of cash and had to borrow from his editor and agent and write short stories for commercial magazines. The early 1930s, when Fitzgerald was conceiving and working on the book, were the darkest years of his life and, accordingly, the novel has its bleak elements.

I love his writing style in this book but the plot was dull. The surprise of finding out that Nicole was previously a psychological patient of Dick‘s was interesting, but it didn‘t get much more interesting after that. The back and forth in the chronology was a bit confusing at times. Annoyed at the infidelities on both parts. For how beautiful the writing was, I wish I liked the story more!

This book feels too “much to do about nothing” to hold my attention. Rich Americans being lazy on the French Riviera and in Paris, semi-witty conversations… no. Not now at least. #1001books

Ruthiella I pretty much hated it this book. 😂 It does move away from the Riviera to Paris and Switzerland, but it doesn‘t improve as a result IMO. 13mo
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I expected as much 😜 13mo
Graywacke I think I have a copy languishing around here somewhere. I‘ll allow to continue to languish 13mo

quietlycuriouskate Not a fan. I read it a while back and recall wondering if and when it was going to "get good" but it just stayed... meh. Wished I'd bailed. ? 13mo
jenniferw88 Unfortunately, I had to stick with this as it was an a-level set text. It would have been a bail for me, too. Like @merelybookish says, I had my fill of Fitzgerald with Gatsby (and that was bad enough!) 12mo

Started out stronger than I expected but also fizzled out midway faster than I expected. The story became a little placid and the ending was very blasé. This book had a lot of potential but it just wasn‘t up to snuff. Fitzgerald was just going on his name at this point and seemingly just wanted to sell another book, good, bad, or ugly.

Okay, the book blurb sounded good and since I do like Gatsby, I thought I would like this one too. I did not. Although I get the major themes of this book - relationships are complex, the need to belong, the need to be loved, mental illness - I just never got invested in the characters. Honestly, I was mostly bored.

#bookspinbingo - my #doublespin for this month & also a bingo!

Susanita Yeah I tried to read this a few years ago and only got to about page 10. 2y

Rissreads I‘ve never read it, so I think I should fix that! How you doing? 5y
JennyM @Rissreads hi my lovely. We are good, thanks. Keeping our spirits up and getting into the home school routine. How are you and your family? Have you got all your kids back home with you? Hope all is well 😘 5y
Rissreads I just picked this book up at a secondhand book store, my boys needed some new books to read. That‘s one good thing to come out of ISO is them reading again! Reid and I will be back at school next week, he is in yr 11. Lane is doing Uni from home and Shannon is still in Melbourne. We have been binge watching Brooklyn 99 and playing some card/board games, which I love to do! I‘ve also been trying to get some jobs around the house done. 5y
Rissreads I have been dancing everyday as I set myself a challenge to dance for 100 days straight. Today is day 26! I‘m really enjoying it but I‘m not loosing any weight which is a bummer because I cannot stop eating everything in sight!!!!! Working again will fix that! Stay safe xxx 5y
JennyM @Rissreads I love this, Riss! A dance challenge is what I think we all need! Hope you go ok back at school. Mine are doing well with the challenge it all brings - I actually think they are quite enjoying the less hurried schedule and being home with the dogs 🐶 Enjoy the book when you get to it. 😘 5y

I thought it was OK. Through the first third of the book I was uninterested but as I pressed on the plot began to darken and motivations of the characters became more evident. And everyone got more drunk and depressed and I became more interested. I didn't quite buy the ending.

Fun facts: I play basketball weekly at the high school F. Scott Fitzgerald attended: St. Paul Academy. Go Spartans!I‘ve spent many a night in F. Scott‘s theater.

Yet another #modernlibrarytop100 book that seemed a whole lot longer than it actually is. This book about a married couple and their various issues and infidelities felt so pointless and mostly lacked any kind of energy. There were very brief flares of beauty and insight but I was too bored to give them much notice. I really hope that Gatsby is better than this!

Notafraidofwords I‘m starting to think that is his only good book was Gatsby although I did enjoy the ending of the beautiful and the damned. 6y

Fitzgerald used real letters his wife, Zelda, wrote during her breakdown in his fictionalised bestseller. Can‘t say I would have appreciated that if I were Zelda but the book is so good - my all time favourite and annual re-read.
