The Bird Eater
The Bird Eater | Ania Ahlborn
Twenty years ago, the mysterious death of his aunt left Aaron Holbrook orphaned and alone. He abandoned his rural Arkansas hometown vowing never to return, until his seven-year-old son died in an accident, plunging Aaron into a nightmare of addiction and grief. Desperate to reclaim a piece of himself, he returns to the hills of his childhood, to Holbrook House, where he hopes to find peace among the memories of his youth. But solace doesn t come easy. Someone or something has other plans. Like Aaron, Holbrook House is but a shell of what it once was, a target for vandals and ghost hunters who have nicknamed it the devil s den. Aaron doesn t believe in the paranormal at least, not until a strange boy begins following him wherever he goes. Plagued by violent dreams and disturbing visions, Aaron begins to wonder if he s losing his mind. But a festering darkness lurks at the heart of Holbrook House a darkness that grins from within the shadows, delighting in Aaron s sorrow, biding its time."

This book was well written and creepy as hell. The loss of Aaron‘s son has driven him into the depths of despair. His therapist advises him to go back to his childhood home in Arkansas to work through the grief of losing his son. That was the worst advice ever. Definitely worth reading.

My first read by this author ended up being a low pick. However, I am excited to read more.

The Bird Eater started out strong for me. A guy returning to his childhood home to confront traumatic events from the past created a great background story for this creepy tale. As the story progressed I felt it became predictable and I lost interest here and there in several of the supporting characters.

Still a good horror read, just not a favorite.

BarbaraBB I‘ve read some good ones by Ahlborn and am looking forward to another one. I will skip this one though for now! 2y
vivastory This is one of the few by Ahlborn that I haven't read. My favorites are: The Devil Crept In, Seed, Within These Walls, The Shuddering (perfect winter horror) & her novella I Call Upon Thee 2y
Reggie Brother is her best though. Seed, The Shuddering, and The Devil Crept In are right after. 2y
Addison_Reads @vivastory @Reggie thank you for the suggestions. I'll try these out soon. 2y

I enjoyed this book to a certain extent. I felt like parts of it were just too familiar, like so many other books I have read that have similar ideas. I definitely thought it was creepy and interesting and I enjoyed the twist, but I just didn‘t find it as unique as I had hoped. I would definitely read something else by this author, though!

Finished up book 3 of 4 for this round of #lmpbc for #groupO #OMGHorror I won't say that I didn't enjoy this one but it also left me feeling triggered. There was some pretty twisted stuff in here that was compelling but also slightly maddening at the same time. Not a light read or for the faint of heart. 3.5⭐

Sadly, this book was very underwhelming for me. It took me nearly three weeks to read it because it really dragged. There were moments of creepiness and interesting concepts, but this just didn‘t do it for me. I hope you all like this one more than I did, but it was a 3 star read for me. #lmpbc

Marmie7 Ooohh!! Bird Eater please😀I haven't read any of these, though I own Kill Creek. 5y
Chrissyreadit @collegecatlady I think we have opposite reading styles! My idea of horror is more Amytyville or killer mermaids. Just jumping into conversation based on your titles... 5y
JoScho I have read Kill Creek but am open to all the others. Bird Eater has been on my TBR for a while. 5y
HeathHof I'm good with Bird Eater, it's been on my TBR too. 5y

I really enjoyed this creepy little story & pictured this painting and my cousins' old farmhouse the entire time I read it! I thought it could have been edited a little better but the scare factor was totally there!!! I was really impressed and I think I'm a convert... as long as she doesn't confuse crocheting and knitting again... 😂

BeansPage @Crazeedi @Linear @Bklover @Andrew65 @Bookwormjillk thank you so much you guys. I have been trying to acclimate myself to reading physical books by holding the book, flipping through it, reading the back of it, smelling the pages... All the things that I love to do. I'm hoping that this will help encourage my senses to actually open the book and read it. 6y
BeansPage As for the audio book idea I think it's a great one! The problem that I have right at this moment is that they are a little bit pricey and I do not own any currently. ☹️ So I have to make do with what I have. 6y
Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid Do you not have a library that does digital audiobooks. I am signed up to two or three libraries and it allows me to download free any audiobooks they have. Worth researching online. The other thing I do is keep my eye out for daily deals on audible. Usually available in U.K. for Q9.99 or Qa.99. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid For example done the first three audiobooks for Harry Potter by downloading from the local library website. (edited) 6y

I didn‘t like this one at all. The story was weak, the “romance” part unconvincing, and to top it all off the audiobook narrator didn‘t suit the story. A disappointment from Ahlborn.

Scurvygirl Oh no, would it have been any better if you had read it? 7y
tricours @Scurvygirl perhaps, but I found the story itself pretty weak! 7y
Scurvygirl @tricours that‘s too bad, her stories are usually pretty reliable for a good read. 7y
tricours @Scurvygirl yes, I loved Brother, but I think that‘s because there‘s nothing supernatural there, just gruesome people! I wasn‘t too impressed by Seed, but Within these walls was ok. Currently listening to The Neighbors, and I‘m liking it a lot so far! 7y
IamIamIam I could see this being a really bad audiobook. I read it digitally and was rolling my eyes a few times but was able to skip past the dumb stuff and poor editing choices. 5y

Not really the right kind of bird for this one... but the best #AudioColoring pic that I have! A fast and fun spooky read! Not her best and the audio version is WAY over dramatic so I actually read most on the kindle! But a great fun #ReadAlong with @JoeStalksBeck 😃

Creepy, morbid, and disturbing. Just what an October/November read should be. A story about a man going home after 20 years away to try to put his life back together. But something is haunting him. Is it an entity, the house, or himself?

Did not love. First of all, if you are going to place your novel in a real/semi real setting (North AR) then you should do some research on the area first. I'm from Arkansas, so perhaps I'm being overly critical. Second, why did a female author make her only main female character such an idiot?!
