4⭐️ A really interesting look at how A Christmas Carol developed; could have done without the last section, which felt rushed. Overall, it was a good read. #2020 #nonfiction #bookreview #bookstagram #ebook #readnosedreindeer #wintergames2020 +41pts

While it was super interesting to hear about the time period in Dickens‘ life that led to him writing a Christmas Carol, the rest of the book was pretty lacking

Good. Informative even though at times the writing did repeat itself and explained things that a British audience would already know such as the translation of old money i.e pounds, shillings and pence. Even though this is written by an American author he doesn't cater for an international audience well.

This is a fairly short yet incredibly interesting read! It includes an overview of Dickens‘s life and writings, information about the world of publishing at the time, and the history of Christmas celebrations in England, all with specific emphasis on the writing and publishing of A Christmas Carol. It describes how this story helped revive the celebration of Christmas and has continued to impact the holiday to the present.

#Christmas #nonfiction

batsy Yay, glad you enjoyed it too! 5y
JazzFeathers Staked! 5y
Daisey @JazzFeathers A lot of the things you mentioned in your blog post are included with elaboration as well as quite a bit more information about the publishing process, which I would expect to interest you. Strongly recommended! 5y

Dickens wrote #AWintersTale that has become an enduring Christmas classic. I read A Christmas Carol for a Litsy buddy read last year & thoroughly loved it. This book is a short overview of Dickens‘s circumstances as he wrote Carol, but it gives a general biographical sketch of his life & context into his other works, as well. Not as detailed as a bio, but still fascinating, especially about the Victorian publishing industry. #WinterWonderland

I watched this movie today and didn‘t even know it was a book. I‘ve never read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens but I have watched the movies about it. I also didn‘t know that Charles Dickens had to self publish A Christmas Carol. How amazing! Despite all the naysayers he continued on and wrote something people weren‘t expecting.

If you haven‘t seen this movie you should! It‘s really good.

AmberWB Was it on Netflix? 5y

Just watched the film yesterday night and adored it. Didn't know it was based on a book.

Charles Dickens is such a #RelatableCharacter especially for someone who, like me, also writes stories. I find the exploration of the inner life of a writer so true to life.

But it is a wonderful story overall. I laughed and l chiedo and l fell in love with Dickens, with all his qualities and flaws.

I can't promote this book enough! As a lover of Christmas and all things Yuletide, this fascinating look at the birth of what we know as a Dickensian Christmas is a must read. Standiford's writing is elegant and hooking. I can't wait to read his other works.

RaimeyGallant Sounds super interesting! Is there a strong religious bent in the analysis? And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. Or if you prefer how-to videos, @chelleo put some together at the link in her bio. Also, I posted some of next month's Litsy games yesterday if you're interested. 6y
Cottonluv Thank you! I'll be sure to look into those things. I'm quickly becoming addicted. 🤣. As to your question, no, there are really little to no (to memory) religious references, which, in it's way, makes it that much more interesting. 6y

Took my MIL to see this and it was lovely! Now I'm soaking in a pomegranate infused bath and catching up on the #christmascarolbuddyread! I'm a few days behind because #scroogyme is peopled out. I've been rather emotionally drained and not up to reading for the past few days; the holidays tend to send me into introvert overdrive and I am unable to decompress due to one event coming after the other. I do love Christmas though, just overwhelmed.

#TBRtemptation post 11! Now a major motion picture. This is the recounting of how one book revived an legendary author and a centuries-old holiday. This is the story of the life of "A Christmas Carol", from its precarious beginning of publisher rejection to its soaring popularity and enmity from religious critics. A sentimental biography of an iconic book. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Didn‘t realize this was a book first, but I can say the movie was a great way to kick off the Christmas season. The scenes where Dickens is gathering inspiration and “wrestling” with his vivid characters who have taken on such a life of their own that they refuse to be bent to his will are perfect. Gotta reread A Christmas Carol now!
