Disappearance at Devil's Rock
Disappearance at Devil's Rock: A Novel | Paul Tremblay
A family is shaken to its core after the mysterious disappearance of a teenage boy in this eerie tale, a blend of literary fiction, psychological suspense, and supernatural horror from the author of A Head Full of Ghosts.A Head Full of Ghosts scared the living hell out of me, and Im pretty hard to scare, raved Stephen King about Paul Tremblays previous novel. Now, Tremblay returns with another disturbing tale sure to unsettle readers.Late one summer night, Elizabeth Sanderson receives the devastating news that every mother fears: her thirteen-year-old son, Tommy, has vanished without a trace in the woods of a local park. The search isnt yielding any answers, and Elizabeth and her young daughter, Kate, struggle to comprehend Tommys disappearance. Feeling helpless and alone, their sorrow is compounded by anger and frustration: the local and state police have uncovered no leads. Josh and Luis, the friends who were the last to see Tommy before he vanished, may not be telling the whole truth about that night in Borderland State Park, when they were supposedly hanging out a landmark the local teens have renamed Devils Rock.Living in an all-too-real nightmare, riddled with worry, pain, and guilt, Elizabeth is wholly unprepared for the strange series of events that follow. She believes a ghostly shadow of Tommy materializes in her bedroom, while Kate and other local residents claim to see a shadow peering through their windows in the dead of night. Then, random pages torn from Tommys journal begin to mysteriously appearentries that reveal an introverted teenager obsessed with the phantasmagoric; the loss of his father, killed in a drunk-driving accident a decade earlier; a folktale involving the devil and the woods of Borderland; and a horrific incident that Tommy believed connects them.As the search grows more desperate, and the implications of what happened become more haunting and sinister, no one is prepared for the shocking truth about that night and Tommys disappearance at Devils Rock.

I thought about bailing because it‘s such a slooowww burn in the beginning. I wanted a faster pace. However, there is a point where it clicked for me and I couldn‘t read fast enough. Is it a thriller? A ghost story? Horror? It‘s sort of all three, with a mystery thrown in. I love the way Tremblay captured the anguish of Tommy‘s mother in the days after his disappearance-the “not knowing” nearly did her in. Great work by one of my favorites.

This was a slow burn but I ended up liking it. Is it supernatural or horror? 🤷‍♀️ It did have some creepy parts. It also kept me wondering what happened to Tommy. I am still not sure how I feel about the ending though. 3.5 ⭐️

I won‘t say too much about this atmospheric slow-burn of a book, so I don‘t spoil anything for the rest of my #LMPBC group (the beer cans will make sense, though).
The only way I can think to describe what this was like is to say that, if it were a movie, it wouldn‘t be a high-grossing summer blockbuster, but it WOULD be an awards-season contender.

@vonnie862 - this is going in the mail tomorrow!

Tremblay is an expert at crafting unsettling atmosphere (there were a few chapters that were stellar) but I ultimately had trouble finishing this novel. A solid start but didn‘t quite keep me engaged throughout.

I‘m catching up on my reviews for last year- I really liked the way this started, it was creepy and intriguing but for me it was let down towards the end. One of those books that seemed like the author didn‘t really know how to finish things up. It left me frustrated. ⭐️⭐️

🎧 Less horror, more supernatural, fiction, psychological suspense. Slow in comparison to the author‘s current work. It‘s character driven. The story begins with a missing 13yo boy (Tommy). Elizabeth & her daughter Kate repeatedly stumble (magically?) across pages of Tommy‘s journal that tell the story of what happened in flashback involving Tommy, his 2 friends, an older boy. I‘d say, slice of life but it keeps you guessing. I liked it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️5/6

It‘s ok, I really didn‘t need to sleep tonight. 😱

This book is the perfect blend of psychological thriller, horror, and creepy is it or isn‘t it paranormal. As a mom, this is a worst-fears kinda book. It‘s also well-written and engaging. I couldn‘t stop listening, despite the mounting dread. And that ending. Ugh.

Alright.
That‘s the word I‘ll use to describe this book. I moved real quick into this one because I was so excited about the last Paul Tremblay book that I read. But I feel I was kind of disappointed. In my opinion, there was too much unnecessary text in some of the chapters and I found myself rushing to get through them. Although I was intrigued to find out what happened at the end. Between head full of ghosts and cabin, this comes in 3rd for me

This went in a direction I wasn't expecting. The first few chapters were the strongest for me but it was a compelling story. Middle schooler Tommy disappears one night while hanging out in a state park with two friends; their straight forward account soon becomes more complicated. Tremblay jumps between characters to tell this story and I'm not sure I really felt like I had a handle on any of them by the end.

Book 43: I don‘t know how I exactly feel about this book. The good parts were WOW and the slow parts made it feel like a 600 page book (in a bad way). I enjoyed the realistic horror mixed in with the supernatural horror.

I loathe stories with ambiguous resolutions, yet somehow, Paul Tremblay makes it work. This folk-tale/mystery about a missing teen, a mysterious 20-something he befriends and the mother and sister who try to solve the mystery along with a sympathetic female police officer made for a fun and interesting read. This is my least favorite of Tremblay's novels, yet it's worth reading.

Another great story from this author. Bit more of a slow-burn creepy one in comparison to Head Full of Ghosts and Cabin in the Woods. But equally chilling. 5 stars

I jumped right into this one after finishing Head Full of Ghosts. I don‘t even know what to say about really. There was the line Tremblay is great at walking the reader down-is it supernatural or human behavior-but it just fell short for me. I felt like it was longer than necessary and oh so so much dialogue. Maybe I would have felt differently if I had read this one before HFOG but I went in with high expectations and felt let down in the end.

NatalieR I had the same experience with his books. 6y

Really loved A Head Full of Ghosts, so I had high hopes for this. It took a long time to get going (about halfway before anything happened), and the reasons for the disappearance were so ambiguous as to be unsatisfying. Not sure what really happened at Devil‘s Rock, and sounds like Tremblay isn‘t sure either.

I read this author‘s book Head Full of Ghosts earlier this year I really liked it. His ability to keep you guessing about whether there is something supernatural happening or whether it‘s psychological is compelling. However I just couldn‘t get into this one.

My pre-Thanksgiving package from my wonderful pen pal and fellow educator, @Emilyrjones22 ! Is there any better way to kick off a week off from work than by getting a box of books? Not only that, but she included Walking Dead swag! Thanks, Emily—you‘re the best!!

CindyMyLifeIsLit @Emilyrjones22 Yes, we have the whole week off! Of course, I developed a raging cold Monday and have felt like 💩 since then and haven‘t gotten anything done. 😡. I‘m now armed with extra-strength Mucinex, so hopefully that will help! 7y

CindyMyLifeIsLit @Emilyrjones22 Yeah, it‘s the classic teacher Catch-22. You don‘t want to be sick on your break, but you imagine trying to go to work feeling like this—umm, no! And you can‘t take 3 or 4 days off for a cold! So probably better this way. Still sucks though! 7y

Pretty disappointed in this book. After reading Tremblay's A Head Full of Ghosts, I quickly grabbed this book up. About 70 pages in and, while the writing is easy to read, the story didn't grab my attention as strongly as I hoped. Finished this book in about four days because I just wasn't that into it.
