I watched the movie adaptation of this years ago, probably when I was about 11 or 12. I remember the movie being really sad. The book also fairly sad, but not constantly. There are a lot of light-hearted, sweet moments as well.
Yes. Many plans, but I am most excited for my family's book discussion/club. My father chose The Yearling. There has already been one major argument over it so it may be a short-lived club. It was my idea because my Nanny just died and my mom had a heart attack. She is still really depressed.
2. No, but I want to get in the habit.

I'm so thrilled @TheBookHippie I hope I have the right person to thank. My two daughters, mother, sister, and I are starting our family book club. My 65 year old father wanted to join and it was a toss up between Where the Red Fern Grows and The Yearling.
For my birthday, my family got me this lovely edition of The Yearling (which I bought at the library book sale and they wrapped and gave to me with some vegan truffles, also purchased by me). Along with our copies of Bambi and Old Yeller, this helps me continue my tradition of traumatizing my children with literature.
At the suggestion of @ljuliel , here are two books that had a strong emotional effect on me. I very rarely cry at books, but I made the mistake of reading The Yearling aloud to my daughter and sobbing my way through a whole section of it. Fierce Kingdom didn't bother me (except for the adrenaline rush) until I finished reading. I closed the back cover and lost it, snot, zubzubs, and all. Very unlike me.
And there you are!

There were five of them out there for a bit. I feel like a Disney princess y'all
Jody‘s best friend is Fodder-wing Forrester. 😮 #uniquecharacternames #literaryluck
This is my favorite book. Possibly from a different angle. The Mom spoke to my heart. After watching her other babies die early, she was forced to literally kill his chilhood in order to ensure his survival. New to litsy, and excited to figure it out. #LitsyWelcomeWagon
This book has taken me longer than necessary to finish reading. It‘s a quiet and thoughtful coming-of-age story. The writing is very descriptive and at some points I find the story dragging. Maybe I would have liked it better if I‘ve read it when I was a child. 🤷♀️ Glad I‘ve finally read it though.

It's an episodic book of sentimental stories about a boy and his family in rural Florida, and the wild fawn he brings into their home. Course, you all probably know all about it because it's a favorite for many many readers. I probably should have read it as a child, as did many who love it, because I'm afraid my window of optimal enjoyment is now closed: not enough incident for me, and too much dialect, though I did appreciate the nature writing.
Well, *that* puts a whole new spin on The Yearling:
"Ma Baxter's complaint was at lack of rain. Her brain barrels were empty."
Just in case there was any doubt: spelling matters. Obviously, this should read: "Her braaaains! barrels were empty."

Prompt: New Release
Here is my take on the prompt "New Release". I took the picture on the left from my sliding glass door. A deer gave birth in my yard. If you look closely you can see she is cleaning the fawn in the grass. Hince the new realease. This in turn got me to thinking of the tagged book. Does anyone remember reading this as a kid? ❤
I went to The Yearling Restaurant for lunch today. Named for the famous book The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. The author was from New York but wrote her books in Cross Creek Florida. Her house is located at a state park down the road from the restaurant but is closed for renovations. I‘ll have to check out her books. Has anyone else read any of her books?
I just bought this. I've haven't read it yet, is it good? Has anyone read it?
Saw this little guy taking shelter in our backyard last night. He‘s super tiny - hiding under the kid size picnic table under the swingset. Made me think of the tagged book which I sobbed through when I read it in grade 7. Happy June! #spring #fawn
I love the beginning of chapter illustrations in this edition of The Yearling.

Most Popular Book of 1938: This is less a story about a boy and his pet than a tale about pioneer life. Fighting Mother Nature and wildlife just to survive. It's also a good lesson on why we don't keep wild animals as pets. I actually enjoyed reading about how they went about daily life more than anything. Also, I learned something new: Fawn = 1st year of life. Yearling = 2nd year (photo courtesy of DSDamm Photography) #RoryGilmoreChallenge
#FunFridayPhoto! I've been wanting to read this book since I was a teen, I have owned it since then, yet I still haven't read it😔. Soon...I hope. 😆💕📚💕
These are my selected books for the #litsyatoz challenge. I'll be doing a mixed track, will not be reading them in order, and may subject to change. Books selected are from my physical TBR books as I wish to make a dent on my enormous TBR pilesss. @BookishMarginalia
#xyztitle The Yearling! #seasonsreadings2016
In pondering books about #innocence for #augustphotochallenge #day22, I realized that all the books that came to mind had to do with lost innocence... and end up being heartbreaking! Why is that? Perhaps we need the contrast to show the innocence? My choice for today's theme is this beautiful story of a simpler time & place, and a young boy's connection with animals. It's lovely and... yes... heartbreaking.
Because I've always been a huge animal lover, I immediately thought of animal/human friendships, my favorite of which is the one between Jody and Flag, despite its tragic end. The Yearling is a quiet book, but it packs a wallop. #augustphotochallenge #favbookishfriendship
