The Natural History of Selborne | Gilbert White

As a historical document, this is a great look at the natural world in a particular spot in England in the 1700s. As a book, and particularly as an audiobook, it works less well, too often giving a listing of animals and being a bit dull for it. Some bits are good, but overall I didn‘t enjoy this much. #NaturaLitsy

Although this letter was written in June 1775, it seems perfect for all the cobwebs I'm finding in my garden atm. Anyone else reading/enjoying Selborne?

I thought I would do a quick check-in and see how everyone is doing. I narrowly missed getting flooded by Storm Babet yesterday!! 😱 Just a soggy garage, it could have been a lot worse. 😅

Bookwormjillk I‘m glad you didn‘t have too much damage. We‘ve had about 6 one hundred year storms in the last two years and it‘s frightening. I haven‘t started to book yet. Soon! 1y

jlhammar Glad to hear you weren‘t flooded. Life is really getting in the way of my reading this month! Very frustrating. Hoping to dip into this some this week yet, but it‘s very unlikely I‘ll finish by the end of the month. Still really looking forward to it. 1y

Cuilin I‘m reading about a letter a day or so. I‘m going slow but I‘m enjoying its gentle style and pace. Glad to hear about the flooding, Cork Ire not so lucky. (edited) 1y

Hooked_on_books I listened to almost all of it. The audio was the only way I could get the book and it‘s not the best choice, unfortunately. Some of it‘s great, but it‘s a bit dull. 1y

AllDebooks @jlhammar I think it lends itself to an occasional dip in as the letters are shortish. I certainly couldn't read it as a stand-alone book. I much prefer coming back to it periodically. 1y

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Life is hectic as always. Our landlady isn‘t fixing a water problem so we‘ve been pretty much without water for a month. Dealing with the health dept. and unfortunately if it doesn‘t get fixed within a set time, they could condemn all the impacted homes and we would have to move. Trying to stay positive and enjoy my fav time of year, but it‘s getting harder. We signed The Wyrmling up for a costume contest at a local fair. Looking forward to it. 🖤 1y

Bookwomble @Cathythoughts Thank you ? I haven't read "Selbourne", but the author of the book I'm presently reading, Richard Mabey, has written about it, and quotes this passage, which he likens to a haiku. 5y
