The Great American Whatever
The Great American Whatever | Tim Federle
From the award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of Five, Six, Seven, Nate! and Better Nate Than Ever comes a laugh-out-loud sad YA debut thats a wry and winning testament to the power of old movies and new memoriesone unscripted moment at a time.Quinn Roberts is a sixteen-year-old smart aleck and Hollywood hopeful whose only worry used to be writing convincing dialogue for the movies he made with his sister Annabeth. Of course, that was all beforebefore Quinn stopped going to school, before his mom started sleeping on the sofaand before Annabeth was killed in a car accident. Enter Geoff, Quinns best friend who insists its time that Quinn came outat least from hibernation. One haircut later, Geoff drags Quinn to his first college party, where instead of nursing his pain, he meets a guya hot oneand falls hard. What follows is an upside-down week in which Quinn begins imagining his future as a screenplay that might actually have a happily-ever-after endingif, that is, he can finally step back into the starring role of his own life story.

Argh, I forgot that I can't stand angsty realistic teen fiction. I have an adult child so I've lived through this twice already. Also, I hate how the narrator keeps talking about his mom “letting herself go.“ DNF for my #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

I throughly enjoyed this YA story of a grieving teen trying to live again after the death of his sister in an accident. The novel feels very true with devastating grief entertained with the minutia of every day teen angst.

I read this excellent YA novel during my class's SSR (silent sustained reading) time, so it took longer than it usually would have . . . because it was SO. Good. I just wanted to devour it! Federle has crafted a wonderful protagonist in Quinn, a teenager dealing with life and the death of his sister and first love and his dreams, all in a realistic and engaging way. Wonderful book.

I have read none of these. #trueconfessions. Anyone else not doing one thing on the #GARBingo ?

goodbyefrancie I haven't done bingo because there are several that I know I won't read. I've read 49 of them, and might read a few more. Several don't interest me at all. 6y

alisiakae Well I started #garbingo and have only finished one. I DNF another. 😃😃😃 I hope to catch up soon. 6y
ravenlee I went through the list when it came out. I've read 29, I think, about 20 are books I plan to read anyway, and the rest don't appeal to me for various reasons. And...that's where I leave the GAR. 6y
Samplergal I just can‘t seem to want to read these. I have five on my kindle. Should be easy right? I am not interested in quite a few on the list but these I really am interested in reading. #readingSlumpLump 6y
SleepyDragon I like the program but don't consider the list a challenge I want to try to read all of. I consider it more a list of suggestions, some of which I have already crossed off. I've read 33, and quite a few I have no interest in reading. 6y

PBS has released their list of 100 books for the Great American Read series that starts May 22. I‘m excited to see new(ish) and older classics on the list as well as books from other countries besides America. I‘ve read 28 1/2 books (most of the Wheel of Time series for the 1/2). How many have you read?

I absolutely loved the book. The audio is read by the author and he is AWESOME. My favorite bit, though, was an interview with the author at the end. His advice for kids who feel different from everyone else is this:

“What gets you picked on as a kid is what gets you paid as an adult.” 💙💙💙💙

This book felt like actually interacting with a teen. Thoughts were not always connected, dialogue was not always sequenced, and there was an underlying structure which only one character knew. But it was an interesting look at how a family dealt with grief and how a teen moved on. #LitsyAtoZ #F

BookishFeminist Ugh!! I have the 🍊💩 blocked so he can't randomly show up on my feed. Also I hope you don't @Loretta! It sucks but S&S also has some of the largest imprints that focus on publishing poc & lots of industry prof & authors think a boycott would be ineffective. But I hope you email S&S to encourage them to drop him & contact your bookstores to get them not to purchase it! That seems to be the recommended course of action. I emailed earlier. 😀 (edited) 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist I need to block DJT too! And I will be emailing S & S as well. I can't imagine why they'd give Milo a 250k platform to spew garbage! 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Its through their conservative imprint that all major publishers have 😒 Threshold Editions = 🚮 Honestly they need to check themselves though bc no one should ever be giving white supremacists a platform 😡 8y
elkeOriginal @BookishFeminist Your emoji nickname (🍊💩) is pure brilliance. I am in awe. And LMAO for reals. 8y
BookishFeminist @elkeo 😂😂 one of many nicknames he has earned 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist It's one thing to have mainstream conservative viewpoints. I may not agree with them, but it's another type of diversity. But it's another thing to give a platform to a person who don't have a single non-hateful thought in his head. 8y
Chrissyreadit Maybe we can look at it from a different perspective- they are supporting free speech. Awareness of the hate also brings people together to protest the hate and show that there is a bigger platform of love. And I suspect most people who follow the rhetoric do not read! It will be money wasted and poor business in the end. 8y
elkeOriginal @Chrissyreadit That would be a nice hit of karma if it does not sell and they lose a good chunk of cash on this deal... 8y
Fandomlyla_Pottercy Im a little confused... whats going on? 8y
BookishFeminist @Ebooksandcooks Yea I agree completely& that's what I was getting at. No one should be publishing his particular brand of hate but S&S isn't the only one that does publish stuff that is honestly just as bad sometimes that's removed from most conservative outlets even. I draw the line at endangering others' lives, personally. There's outlets he can write it without being paid and supported by a publisher. 8y
Megabooks @Fandomlyla_Pottercy A man who spreads hate and is a big internet troll is getting a large book advance. 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist Exactly! He can just hang out on the hate forums on Reddit. There's plenty of room there. 😒 8y

I've met Tim Federle at SLJ's Day of Dialog 2015. I told how much I enjoyed his 2 middle grade novels since they centered around Broadway shows. Hearing him reading this teen novel is a treat because this story deals with life, love and death with humor and tears.

52 pages and 6 chapters in and I can't stop. I'm always wary of reviews that say a character is "the new Holden Caulfield" or however it's phrased because Catcher is one of my all-time favorites, but this is pretty good. More reminiscent of Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I also love.
