Uncommon Reader
Uncommon Reader | Alan Bennett
From one of England's most celebrated writers, a funny and superbly observed novella about the Queen of England and the subversive power of readingWhen her corgis stray into a mobile library parked near Buckingham Palace, the Queen feels duty-bound to borrow a book. Discovering the joy of reading widely (from J. R. Ackerley, Jean Genet, and Ivy Compton-Burnett to the classics) and intelligently, she finds that her view of the world changes dramatically. Abetted in her newfound obsession by Norman, a young man from the royal kitchens, the Queen comes to question the prescribed order of the world and loses patience with the routines of her role as monarch. Her new passion for reading initially alarms the palace staff and soon leads to surprising and very funny consequences for the country at large. With the poignant and mischievous wit of The History Boys, England's best loved author revels in the power of literature to change even the most uncommon reader's life.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A quick and delightful little book. Queens Elizabeth stumbles on a lending library while walking her corgis and that initial library loan kindles a passion for reading and changes to how she sees the world and herself. A great book for people who love books! 📚

Above all I‘m always prepared! You never know when you‘ll need a book. I keep an emergency one in my car in case my car ever breaks down. My husband saw that and asked, “Wouldn‘t it make more sense to keep road flares or something in your car?” 😆

A quick read with some laugh out loud moments.

Unfortunately those who most need to hear the message that reading is good and important (but not necessarily the most important thing in life) are least likely to read the book.

I'd love to know if HM read this and what she thought.

This is a quirky little book. It didn‘t pull me in very much, but the ending made me review the whole plot. My jaw was literally left hanging open.

At only 120 pages I think it‘s worth the time, especially for fellow Anglophiles.

I read this years ago. I just reread it and though the story is simple, there are so many great quotes for book lovers!

“What she was finding also was how one book led to another, doors kept opening wherever she turned and the days weren‘t long enough for the reading she wanted to do.”

“Books or not about passing the time. They are about other lives. Other worlds. Far from wanting time to pass, Sir Kevin, one wishes one had more of it.”

Jinjer IS THAT YOUR GORGEOUS BEDROOM?????

I love that book. My German BFF sent me a copy for birthday or Christmas one year because she loved it so much. It's wonderful.

Cute novella showing how anyone, including the queen, can fall under the spell of reading. It also shows how a reader‘s passion can be seen by others as odd or inconvenient.

So far this is charming. About The Queen‘s finding of a bookmobile in her backyard and how it leads her to become a reader.

Both short books. LIGHT FOR THE WORLD TO SEE is stunning—author/poet‘s word choices, powerful simplicity, creative format, evocative message. Gut slamming, yet carries a message of hope.
The Uncommon Reader-what a juxtaposition!Delightful, imaginative tale of Queen Elizabeth II discovering the joys of reading,to the point that her voracious appetite for books precludes all else, royal duties, family.

kspenmoll The Queen‘s privilege, superiority by birth, wealth, separateness from the “commoners”, has insulated her successfully. Books crack her open ever so slightly, changing her inner world. Such a wonderful concept. Perfect book for readers! 4y

I just discovered another #StoryGraph function. Anne Bogal at Modern Mrs. Darcy just posted 21 short books, including the tagged one. I tagged all of them in #StoryGraph, then made that tag public, and here it is!

https://app.thestorygraph.com/tags/1b3542da-1bef-4b23-91b8-810b32174cbf

How to: click on the tag to pull up the page, edit the tag (paper beside the name), click the “make public“ box, and then you can use that URL to share.

Magpiegem Definitely the part of London Londoners don‘t see (says the Londoner) I haven‘t been there since I laid down flower for Princess Di. It‘s a shame we really should make the effort to go and see the beautiful places on our relative doorstep. When I go to the states I always do touristy things. Mehso-so

My last review for a #24in48 read.

I felt the story was okay, and at times comical, but it just missed something, making it a so-so read for me. The Queen rediscovers her love of reading, and the Royal household and staff respond in a not so positive way. Book mentions within the narrative are interesting.

Don't they always?!

This novella was a lot of fun! A servant and the Queen become reading pals and her interfering staff send him away. When I looked up “down on the farm,“ one of the definitions seemed to fit his trajectory. The story is how reading can open the world, even to someone who has been seemingly everywhere.

I'm at about 11 hours now. #24b4Monday is helping me wrap up the books I've been juggling lately!

A fun piece of English fluff for my #Booked2020 #readinaday prompt. Queen Elizabeth stumbles across a bookmobile while chasing the corgis and, guided by a kitchen servant with a preference for gay lit, falls into the world of reading addiction, to the consternation of Palace staff.
