The Uncommon Reader
The Uncommon Reader: A Novella | Alan Bennett
From the author of The History Boys and The Clothes They Stood Up In A deliciously funny novella that celebrates the pleasure of reading. When the Queen in pursuit of her wandering corgis stumbles upon a mobile library she feels duty bound to borrow a book. Aided by Norman, a young man from the palace kitchen who frequents the library, Bennett describes the Queen's transformation as she discovers the liberating pleasures of the written word. With the poignant and mischievous wit of The History Boys, England's best loved author revels in the power of literature to change even the most uncommon reader's life.

Day 4 of #GratefulReads is a book #under250pages and I went with one of my favorite fiction titles, The Uncommon Reader. It‘s such a fun, quick read about the Queen of England taking up reading and how various people react to her new hobby.

Is anyone going to #ReaderCon in Boston this coming weekend? I don‘t really have the time but this program is seriously tempting me.

Most anticipated events:
*Readings by CAT VALENTE (😍) & Austin Grossman
*The Shirley Jackson Awards
*”The Horrors of Being Female”
*”Renovating the Haunted House”
*”Carrying the Albatross” (depictions of mental health in fiction)
*”Picture Book Storytime for All Ages”

(Other talks I‘d love to see conflict 😭)

Clare-Dragonfly Wow, those all sound amazing. 5mo
monalyisha @Clare-Dragonfly Right?! Titles of other talks that I wish didn‘t bump up against the ones above are: “Cultural Hauntings and African-American History”, “Am I Allowed?: Representation, Appropriation, and Anxiety”, “Marginalized People Destroy History”, “The Peril of Being Disbelieved” (which has to do with womanhood), & “Found Family in SF.” I want to yell at the person responsible for scheduling the time slots. 😆 But also I want to GO! 5mo

By far my favorite short book is The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. I reread this one often and it still fills me joy. It tells the story of what happens when Queen Elizabeth II discovers books and reading, and how it affects everyone around her. Let‘s just say that the more she falls into her passion for reading, the more her staff is annoyed with her distraction. Witty, relatable for all readers, with a zinger of an ending. #lilnuggiveaway

What a lovely book. I first came upon this and read it while living in England. It wad time for a rereading. I read this to Gigi at the pool. Here is a resonating excerpt: Nor initially did she discus her reading with anyone, least of all in public, knowing that such a late-flowering enthusiasm, however worthwhile, might lead her to ridicule. It would be the same, she thought, if she had developed a passion for God, or dahlias.

I really enjoyed this novella. I think it was a fun read, and I love that while the author told us what the queen was reading, he didn‘t feel the need to show off a PhD in Literature by telling us all about the books. Fun, interesting, and a good look at how reading improves the mind of a reader.
