Neverworld Wake
Neverworld Wake | Marisha Pessl
Enter a realm where fears are physical and memories come alive in this absorbing psychological suspense thriller with a sci-fi twist, from acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Special Topics in Calamity Physics and Night Film. Once upon a time, back at Darrow-Harker School, Beatrice Hartley and her six best friends were the cool kids, the beautiful ones. Then the shocking death of Jim--their creative genius and Beatrice's boyfriend--changed everything. One year after graduation, Beatrice is returning to Wincroft--the seaside estate where they spent so many nights sharing secrets, crushes, plans to change the world--hoping she'll get to the bottom of the dark questions gnawing at her about Jim's death. But as the night plays out in a haze of stilted jokes and unfathomable silence, Beatrice senses she's never going to know what really happened. Then a mysterious man knocks on the door. Blithely, he announces the impossible: time for them has become stuck, snagged on a splinter that can only be removed if the former friends make the harshest of decisions. Now Beatrice has one last shot at answers . . . and at life. And so begins the Neverworld Wake.

I love how weirdly different Pessl works are. I'm always amazed with the worlds and stories she dreams up.

Neverworld Wake was no different, from the get go I was intrigued and captured by the whole idea of a space between life and death where you have to make the decision you never would want to in life.
Even the unlikable characters didn't deter me from wanting to know. And as I sit here thinking it all through, I know I'll read it again.

Enchanted_Bibliophile Phoebe Strole made this a truly amazing listen. I'm definitely adding her to my narrator love list.

6/23 I had a run of slow audiobooks that didn‘t grip me and this is the book that broke that. I‘m not saying it‘s fantastic, but I did find it gripping. This is one for you if you like unlikable characters. It wasn‘t what I expected going in and I don‘t want to give any spoilers but I found it intriguing 🧐

Maybe my expectations for this were way too high because night film and special topics in calamity physics are two of my fave novels of all time, but this felt much more basic YA than I wanted. Yes the worldbuilding was weird and I loved that but the characters and the actual conflict at the centre bored me :/ it wasn‘t bad bad but it‘s definitely her worst book

I flew through this book-the plot, mystery, and atmosphere kept me riveted to the end. My heart absolutely broke for the friend group. While the characters weren‘t perfect or likable by any means, their history and chemistry made them feel alive. A book that will stick with me and one to reread very soon.

Tagged book… it just hit me exactly right. 5🌟 Tho I also loved Night Film… maybe I just love her stories 😁

We Were Never Here? Quick, fun enough… but not shocking or particularly compelling and I felt … idk, it was a bit anticlimactic for me.

Currently reading these other 2. Lakesedge.. I‘m only 25% of the way in, but it seems chock-full of mistakes, poor editing, and cliche. Just me? 🤷🏽‍♀️

⭐⭐ A very slow start had me uninterested but the story became engaging about 1/3 through. The plot was unique & imaginative but some of the dots didn't connect. The execution was lacking as most of it felt rushed, the characters came to conclusions out of the blue with no lead up. The "secret" that was revealed at the end by the MC didn't make much sense since the story is told in first person POV. It felt disjointed but had potential.

The book I have chosen to read is about a girl named Beatrice Hartley and her five best friends. Beatrice and her friends are known as popular and cool kids at their local high school. Until one day suddenly someone in their group named Jim dies. Not only was Jim one of the friends in their inseparable group he was Beatrice‘s boyfriend. As time went on Beatrice does not know the reason for Jim‘s death and the thought of not knowing kills her.

Hadlee Fleischhauer After graduation, the group of friends decided to meet up, and have a fun night as they used to back in high school. Beatrice thinks that her friends might know more about Jim‘s death than they say they do. The friends reunite and it is like the year gap never changed their friendship they all shared. Until the next morning when they all woke up to a man at the door. 3y
Hadlee Fleischhauer This is as far as I have got into the story, but I am excited to read more and hopefully find out about Jim‘s death and the secrets the friend group has tried to keep from each other. I would give this story a ⅗ because I have not finished it yet, and some parts are a bit confusing to grasp, but I am still excited to see how the author unfolds the rest of the book. This book is written in first person, from the point of view of Beatrice. 3y

Landing firmly in the middle on this one. The plot was interesting and unique with a groundhog‘s day type mystery and the writing was excellent. However it had slow pacing and lacked character development which led me not really feeling the emotional impact of the ending seeing as I didn‘t really care about the characters. Definitely a meh for me. I will say I appreciated that it being a YA the writing wasn‘t sophomoric.

Beatrice Hartley & her friends were in a collision on a deserted road last year. Boyfriend, Jim, died. A man tells them that 1 of them will live & the rest will die. Need to vote on who will live. Must be unanimous. They are stuck in the Neverworld Wake where the accident repeats daily just like Groundhog day. YA book with magical realism, science fiction, psychological suspense. Unique characters & plot. I loved Night Film. Recommended for YA.

Ruthiella I loved Night Film too but her debut not so much. I think I need to give this one a try! 😀 5y

Neverworld Wake can best be described with the comparison of Groundhogs Day meets Agatha Christie that was used for Stuart Turton's "Seven and Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle." Aside from the obnoxiousness of the narrator's boyfriend, I enjoyed this one quite a bit. I read it in one sitting. It's no Night Film, but to be fair I've never read another book like NF. Although Gemma Files' Experimental Film was definitely in the neighborhood.

I finished this book yesterday! It left me a little speechless because the ending I didnt see coming since I usually dont read these type of books. I have had this on my TBR for a while but since the book is suppose to take place on the same day over and over again that idea stopped me a little from starting it. It is more than that its reliving the same day over and over again trying to find answers to What Happened? Why is this happening?

This was...fine. It was a creative concept but I found it to be a little simplistic. That‘s not a knock on the fact that it‘s a YA novel - I‘ve just come to expect more complexity from Pessl. It starts out as “what happened to the boyfriend” mystery but then veers into sci-fi/fantasy territory which isn‘t my thing. I was entertained but it‘s firmly in the 2.5-2.75 🌟 range. 👇🏼

It was an absorbing read and I was always eager to see what they would discover next.

We found out what people did, just not always why, but perhaps that wasn't necessary, because this was Beatrice's story. Beatrice tends to see the good in everyone, but this tendency also makes you miss the dark, complicated things that swirl in everyone's heart.

After all of the adventure, I wasn't expecting an ending so introspective and philosophical.

Bklover I‘m looking forward to this one. Great review! 5y

After a night of partying they wake up in the neverworld where they are tasked to vote for which of them will live or repeat the day. They use this time to unravel the mystery of their friends‘ death. It‘s a really unique take on a mystery, and completely engrossing.

Such a fascinating story. I went into it blind and would highly recommend you do the same. I will say though that it is part sci-fi and part murder mystery which I have really been enjoying. The one thing I did not like about this book was that it‘s characters were really one-dimensional, each of the 5 (or 6 if you count Jim) has their defining characteristic and not much else to offer. #audiobook
