The Last Letter from Your Lover
The Last Letter from Your Lover: A Novel | Jojo Moyes
A sophisticated, page-turning double love story spanning forty years-an unforgettable Brief Encounter for our times from theNew York Timesbestselling author ofMe Before You,After You,andOne Plus One. It is 1960. When Jennifer Stirling wakes up in the hospital, she can remember nothing-not the tragic car accident that put her there, not her husband, not even who she is. She feels like a stranger in her own life until she stumbles upon an impassioned letter, signed simply "B", asking her to leave her husband. Years later, in 2003, a journalist named Ellie discovers the same enigmatic letter in a forgotten file in her newspaper's archives. She becomes obsessed by the story and hopeful that it can resurrect her faltering career. Perhaps if these lovers had a happy ending she will find one to her own complicated love life, too. Ellie's search will rewrite history and help her see the truth about her own modern romance. A spellbinding, intoxicating love story with a knockout ending, The Last Letter from Your Lover will appeal to the readers who have made One Day and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society bestsellers. From the Hardcover edition.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 2.5-3 Stars

The main story was interesting (taken place mostly in the 1960‘s), but it was drawn out with these other little things that weren‘t essential. Then near the end of the book we meet Ellie in present day (2003). I see her as being valuable, but her own storyline was not. I could have easily skipped over her story.

This could have been an excellent story if Ellie's part had been left out. The story starts with a lady named Jennifer who wakes up with amnesia. She kind of remembers her husband, but when she gets home she finds letters from her lover. Soooooo, good. Then the author brings in Ellie's storyline and tie it into Jennifer's and I wasn't feeling it.

A mixture of two separate stories of doomed love, Moyes creates a combination of historical and contemporary fiction successfully intertwining the stories together in the end.

While I found myself less interested in the present day story, the author successfully drew me back in, although I wasn‘t satisfied with the ending. Letter writing is truly a lost art form and this reminded me of the beauty, joy and romance around writing love letters.

What are people's thoughts on audio books?
I downloaded one to listen to in the car as I now have a longer commute in the morning, but so far am struggling to enjoy it as much as sitting down and reading a physical book. 🚗📚

C.Perone It took a little while for me to get into it (reading, not listening); but it was worth it. It's a good story so hang in. I don't listen to books, so I don't know if there's a big difference between the two 🤷‍♀️ 10mo
Crazeedi I don't listen to many audiobooks, but I've promised myself that I will do more this year. I think it's a habit to develop 10mo

These are my second hand bookstore finds from today. Went in with two bags full of books and came back with these. That's what I love when swaping books through second hand bookstore. I always come out with fewer books than when I went in with. I still have books for a second visit before my vacation is over. So hopefully get to do this again in few weeks. 😍📚

A sweet story, and I don‘t mean that in a bad way at all. Even though getting amnesia from a car accident only really seems to happen in soap operas, books, and movies, the struggle for self-discovery and finding the truth by the MC felt real — most of the story takes place in the 1960s. I liked how the parallel story happens in the last third rather than going back and forth. A very quick read!

Does anyone who has read this and the new release from Fiona Barton, The Child, find some of the newspaper scenes eerily similar? Firing of a reporter and the old records especially. Has anyone else read both? 🤔🤔🤔 I just feel so much deja vu.

I need to put a ton of my books (and all my other stuff) in storage next month so I'm going through all my books cataloging and (possibly 😉) picking a few out to donate! With the rest of my house this has been a chore but I'm absolutely loving going through my books!

Moyes switched between timelines with such ease, and the characters were really great (flawed but empathetic). To me there's a difference between "love story" and "romance story", and this is a good LOVE story! Jennifer and B's relationship could easily have been a distressed-damsel cliche (all "star-crossed love" & "fate conspiring against them") but instead their love was honest & believable. I would suggest this as a great snowy day read.

Good book! Two stories in one - a look back to the 1960's and then the early 2000's, where both stories eventually intersect.
