Discussion time: Roald Dahl's publisher is using sensitivity writers to change certain language in his books to be more appropriate for modern readers. Thoughts?

https://www.thenationalnews.com/arts-culture/books/2023/02/19/authors-criticise-...

TieDyeDude IMO: I would rather see an intro that adds context to the problematic language than change the writing without the author's input (Apparently, Scholastic did this to Goosebumps books without Stine's knowledge). I think this also goes back to parents needing to be more engaged with what their children are reading, instead of removing what they find uncomfortable so they don't have to have difficult conversations with their kids. (ahemDesantisahem) 2y
TheNeverendingTBR I think it's ridiculous. 2y
Ruthiella Agree that parents should be engaged with their kids reading. However, I don‘t have an issue with editing children‘s books for content, particularly when the original editions are still available in print, as I understand they are, if any adult wants to read them. 2y

batsy I agree with you. I think kids learn to suss things out the more that they are exposed to differing viewpoints and even the ugliness of the world. Being able to navigate ideas and learn to differentiate art from its creators and also to differentiate art from real life, and to develop a value system, needs exposure to the stuff that makes up life. And that includes the bad bits. I hope that made sense! 2y
TheBookgeekFrau Censorship, book banning--two sides of the same coin. It's ridiculous 2y
Bookwomble I love Dahl's children's books, but they do include anti-Semitic and other problematic attitudes. Children will read them without thoughtful adult input, and sadly some adults will agree with Dahl's prejudices, which will be perpetuated. In the same way I'm glad that Enid Blyton's Noddy books have had their grossly racist content removed, I'm glad that such an influential writer as Dahl is being updated for a more inclusive age. 2y

#authoramonth @Soubhiville

His wife called him “Roald the Rotten”, aptly, as these stories are as dark and twisted as any modern horror I‘ve read recently. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“The Landlady” is not to be missed! 🙊

sudi Yes, his stories for adults are so good. I didn't even know he wrote stories like these. 5y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve just read The Landlady too! So good! 5y

From this chair some of the greatest children‘s stories ever were dreamed and penned 💕...” I am passionately obsessed with making young readers laugh and squirm and love the story, hopefully I give them some pleasure and help them a little bit to love reading books” Dahl.

This wickedly funny collection of #shortstories for adults is a must-read for Roald Dahl fans! At times dark and even disturbing, with multiple twists and turns, these stories reveal more facets of this beloved children's author's creative mind! #somethingforseptember
