The Winters
The Winters | Lisa Gabriele
"From the brilliant first line to the shattering conclusion, The Winters will draw you in and leave you breathless. . . . A must read." --Liv Constantine, author of The Last Mrs. Parrish A spellbindingly suspenseful new novel set in the moneyed world of the Hamptons, about secrets that refuse to remain buried and consequences that can't be escaped. After a whirlwind romance, a young woman returns to the opulent, secluded Long Island mansion of her new fianc Max Winter--a wealthy politician and recent widower--and a life of luxury she's never known. But all is not as it appears at the Asherley estate. The house is steeped in the memory of Max's beautiful first wife Rebekah, who haunts the young woman's imagination and feeds her uncertainties, while his very alive teenage daughter Dani makes her life a living hell. She soon realizes there is no clear place for her in this twisted little family: Max and Dani circle each other like cats, a dynamic that both repels and fascinates her, and he harbors political ambitions with which he will allow no woman--alive or dead--to interfere. As the soon-to-be second Mrs. Winter grows more in love with Max, and more afraid of Dani, she is drawn deeper into the family's dark secrets--the kind of secrets that could kill her, too. The Winters is a riveting story about what happens when a family's ghosts resurface and threaten to upend everything.

I was hoping for some cold and gloomy vibes off this version like the original since I‘m starting my first winter with out snow. However, the ambiance never quite got there but did a few interesting things with the Max and Mrs DeWinter characters, all while turning Rebecca on her head. Not a regret but not a showstopper. #christyread #gothic #reboot

An interesting, but in the end underwhelming, Rebecca retelling. The plot and characters are updated for a contemporary setting: Monte Carlo > Cayman Islands, British estate > Long Island mansion, > obsessive housekeeper > mentally disturbed stepdaughter. I hated the name of the island estate “Asherley.” While the twist was a logical update to the story, I didn‘t think the resolution and “happy ending” really worked.

BRB_ImReading Agreed, this one was ok. There were some good things about it and some things that fell flat. The wedding dress part really got me! I gasped out loud lol. 3y
Kimberlone @BRB_ImReading agreed, I thought there were interesting parts and the modern update mostly worked. I really hated a few parts though, like the framing dream of the narrator and the name of the estate, Asherley. (edited) 3y

A modern reboot of Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca. Once again, an unnamed narrator is whisked away in a whirlwind romance by a rich widower named Max Winter to his huge estate. However, secrets surround him, especially concerning his late wife Rebekah. Furthering opposition to their union is her teen stepdaughter, Dani, leading to even more revelations in this modern gothic, soap opera.

This book was really between a so-so and a pan for me. I knew going into it that it was a take on Daphne DuMaurier‘s vastly superior novel Rebecca, but I might have survived how derivative it was if the characters had been even a teensy bit believable. Who talks this way? And holy plot machinations, Batman! I read the whole thing, but it just wasn‘t good.

A fun retelling of the gothic novel Rebecca, the story centres on naive young Mrs. Winter and her stepdaughter‘s rocky relationship but quickly spirals into terror and paranoia as she learns more about the mysterious Mr. Winter.

This is a modern-day retelling of the classic gothic story, Rebecca, by Daphne De Maurier. Rebecca is one of my favorite books and this retelling didn‘t disappoint. You can‘t really improve on the original but Lisa Gabriele did a fantastic job mirroring the story but making it original at the same time. I like to think that Daphne would be proud. If you‘ve never read Rebecca, I recommend you read that first.

I loved this one, but am recommending it with a caveat: if you haven‘t read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, you absolutely need to read that first before you dive into this one, lest you become one of the countless reviewers I saw who griped about certain aspects of this book which are hallmarks of the original. This is a modern retelling of Rebecca, with its own twists & turns, & I absolutely LOVE what the author did with the classic characters.

As ‘Rebecca‘ by Daphne Du Maurier is my favourite book of all time, I was both intrigued & apprehensive at reading this modern retelling.

The first half of the book seemed to confirm my fears of it being but a pale imitation of the original, however the author turned it around superbly in the second half. 4🌟

ferskner There's great to hear! I was curious about this one. 5y

I was inspired to read Rebecca a few months ago thanks to the PBS Great American Reads list. While I enjoyed it, I was a little stumped as to why it made the list. 🤷‍♀️ Curious about this modern day retelling... has anyone read this one?

jpmcwisemorgan I saw it today because the ebook is $2.99 but I didn‘t get it because I‘m trying to be better about not buying so many books and I bought a bunch from Dreamspinners because they had a sale. Ahhhhh!!!! But, I‘m kind of interested in this one. 😬 5y
Weaponxgirl I loved it myself, the atmosphere and those famous first lines 😊 5y
Buechersuechtling The “original” Rebecca is at my significant other‘s flat and still needs to be read. Now I‘m feeling I should read it soon. 5y
TheFunkyBookworm @Weaponxgirl I think everything I had heard about it had built it up to be this intense thriller and so I was expecting something that it wasn‘t. I def enjoyed the atmosphere of the book tho. Also I remember something weird about the ending of the book being at the beginning... does that sound familiar? 5y
Weaponxgirl @TheFunkyBookworm I‘d never really thought of it as a thriller but I can imagine that if you went in thinking that it would affect how you felt about what you got in the end. I‘d just heard of it when I read it as a gothic classic and so got what I was expecting. Honestly can‘t remember the ending well, just remember that I loved it 5y

As the title would suggest, this is a retelling or based on novel of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. It was a modern retelling. I found it to be quite a fun read. The author had twisted and turns that made it just that much different than the original to keep you interested. Definitely recommend it to readers who like a good psychological thriller and readers who like Rebecca. The writer honored the original text quite nicely.

Reason 523 to love libraries: automatic book renewals. I have not finished this book. It was due this upcoming Sat. I was going to renew it online toward the end of the week. I received an email from the library today stating that my book was due on Sat, however, it may have automatically renewed. Holy moly cow. I am amazed. Libraries plus technology equals happy happy readers.

Amie I work at a public library and in the first 10 minutes of my shift this morning a patron complained that we had automatically renewed her book that is due tomorrow which she was returning today. This is such a convenient service for most people, so I can't quite understand what her problem was. It's nice to see that you appreciate the service 😊 5y
Bookzombie @amie My library doesn‘t do this, but I would love it. I often renew items and then return them the next day when I can get to the library. 5y
LisaJo @amie That is kind of strange. It‘s not like you get charged for a renewal. 5y
LisaJo @bookzombie I too have renewed items just so I can delay when I have to get back to the library. I‘m pretty positive if there is someone waiting for the book they will not auto renew it for you. I have cards for two libraries. Only one of them does this. Perhaps it will start to pop up at more libraries. 5y

5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars - I LOVED this book 😍. It took me a little longer than usual to read this suspenseful book, but I think that was only because I didn‘t want it to end. It is beautifully written and the descriptions and character observations really pull you into the story. I made several guesses along the way, and although I got close a couple times, I didn‘t put all the pieces together until the very end. Highly recommend! #jpbookreview
