Since this is a collection of all three Binti stories, it feels harder to “rate.” All three go together so well that reading them individually would leave so much missing. There is also so much room at the end for Okorafor to come back to Binti 🤞🏻
Robin Miles is an expert audiobook narrator, so I was very excited that she read these.
I rarely read pure sci-fi, but I loved this, so I need to branch out this way more often.

Edgar is my reading buddy today. I read the first Binti novella a few years ago and loved it. Excited to get back to Nnedi Okorafor's phenomenal world building and discover the rest of Binti's story.

I really enjoyed this one. It reminded me why I love sci-fi books so much. The world building was incredible. I've read that hulu is making an adaptation. Which will be interesting to watch if only to see how they manage to portray some of the characters. (It's gonna cost them a buck or two for sure!) I will definitely be reading more by this author and I hope they do a good job with the hulu show or movie. (NASA YouTube TV for the background.)

I loved this book and would highly recommend it to any and all sci-fi/fantasy fans! Major black panther vibes with the technologically advanced African civilizations. I can't wait to see the hulu adaption! A quote from the book that I feel perfectly sums up the main character: "Binti was change, she was revolution, she was heroism" ????????

Throughout the series, Binti morphs from a human girl into another species she‘s been taught to hate. As Binti begins to love others deeply, she does the same herself.

Binti is the first Himba to be admitted to Oomza University but while she is on the way, her ship is attacked and apart from the pilot and Binti herself, everyone on board is killed. Binti develops a special bond with one of the attackers, Okwu.

Apart from one slip that really should have been caught by the editor, this is a masterpiece of storytelling. I am defiintely going to be keeping an eye open for the author's other works.

🙄 Careless editing within 3 pages or does it get cleared up later?

I read the first novella months ago and then picked up this bind-up from the library. I read the short story and then didn't stop until I finished the 2nd and 3rd novellas. It was bizarre and amazing. Sometimes painful. Like many, I thought it could have been expanded further.

Nnedi Okorafor‘s world-building is astonishing, and I would love to explore the vastness of the Binti universe, which these three novellas somehow show us so much of in such a short span of time! I expected the books to take place at Oomza Uni, so I was disappointed there, but I really enjoyed reflecting on the rich themes of harmony and change and tradition, the necessity of becoming something other than what you were, and of trauma and recovery.

My local indie bookstore had a small event today. These were the books that came home with me. #supportlocal

I could have bought each story individually a few years ago. My unusual patience in not doing so is rewarded with this edition:) Sadly, I may only have two more of her books left to read as new before having to start rereading her works.

The ways this work handles complexity in identity, purpose and loyalty. The skillful & purposeful world building. A tech driven world that literally breathes & centres the different possibilities and definitions of life, contrasted in ways that sci-fi can be cold & metallic & sterile. The efficiency in storytelling.The commentaries on us that expand delightfully. The joy of a black female lead, and officially my favorite spaceships ever imagined.

Finally some time to finish this.

This is a fantastic gripping story, with a load of great plot twists I didn't see coming. The themes of prejudice stemming from ignorance and fear, the complexity of identity and the horror and futility of war are explored really well without it feeling like a lecture, and the writing is beautifully vivid.

State of me drinking from a cup on the train like a posh dickhead instead of necking from the bottle like a normal person. If I accidentally spill red wine in a library book I will never forgive myself. #BooksAndBooze

#ReadHarder challenge 8: a sci fi/fantasy novella. Three of them in fact cos I'm hardcore.

I read all 3 over a couple of days and found them to be amazing. Binti is a girl who sneaks away from all she has ever known to attend a university in space but ends up being the sole survivor of the ship. She brokers intergalactic peace all the while going through the growing pains of a 17 yo. The world building in here‘s great. Just when I thought I wasn‘t connected to these books I was thrown emotional curveballs. An Afrofuturistic Pick!

🐙🐙🐙🐙 This was an excellent and very original trilogy. I read the first one ages ago but decided to reread and then continue on with the other two books. I really enjoyed these stories. This book is pictured with my current crochet wip.

I read this for a science fiction book club, and else I probably would have bailed. I find the ideas actually very interesting, but the story feels disconnected and everything is just mashed up. I don't get the heroine or her emotions at all.

I'm still plodding through the Hugos list, which is one reason I'm reading Binti. I love it so far! It has amazing, vibrant worldbuilding and a Star Trek vibe.

I read all 3 of these books in just over a week and am so glad I was able to read them together. I felt the 1st was great as a single novella, yet it left me wondering about the world it introduced. I felt the 2nd & 3rd should have been one novel. The characters were fascinating and I enjoyed the mix of unique cultures. However, sometimes I also felt it was trying to pack a bit too much into too few pages. I would have enjoyed more detail.

I love it when a I read such original SciFi! This collection of novellas is so unique, it‘s the 1st SciFi to have a Himba girl as MC, to use mathematical equations as a basis of a form of energy & the variety of alien life at the University is fantastic. The hubby kicked me out of our bedroom so I‘m getting comfy in the library and finishing off the combined Binti novellas. I read the first story months ago, but wasn‘t in the mood then to finish them all at the time. I‘m in the mood for some sci-fi now though and these stories about a young Himba woman & her journey in space and at a galactic university are hitting the spot nicely!🚀🌍✨

Still having trouble sleeping(it‘s 4am here)so I‘m jumping straight into this collection of SciFi novellas by Nnedi Okorafor. I‘m having a sci-fi renaissance at the moment, I haven‘t read this much since I was a teenager. It should cover a few prompts in the many challenges I‘m doing, two questions though. 1. Does this count as 3 books or one & 2. Is the author classed as Nigerian or American because she grew up there?

I tried really hard to get into this book. At first I was into it, but it just went downhill for me shortly after. I couldn't finish it and had to bail.

Review is for the new story included. The new short story covers some of the time Binti first spends at the university and her feelings as she just begins to try to cope with the events of the first novella. If I hadn‘t read this before, it‘s great insight to have. Having read it before, it feels an unnecessary addition. But I do love Binti, so I was happy to have that new bit to read!

#BookMail Pt3 I‘ve seen the original novellas all over Litsy, BookTube & Bookstagram for awhile, but I‘m glad I waited to get all three in one hardcover. I love the fact that more diverse authors & stories are being published, a decade ago there was very few represented especially in sci-fi & fantasy. I can‘t wait to read this, and I have my eye on Who Fears Death for my CliFi pick on #Booked2019

A hardcover housing all three original novellas plus the new story, Sacred Fire (which is my favorite of them all). I started reading this via Netgalley, then got this in the mail as I was finishing. It is beautiful and I would say that anyone wanting to read the series now that it is complete, like I did, might enjoy this one volume. I loved reading each story in succession without the wait for publication. The world and characterization is 💯

The new Binti: Sacred Fire is included in the upcoming omnibus. I liked it better than the first novella! It takes place entirely at Oozma University and tells of Binti‘s time acclimating to the Uni environment as a student far from home, missing the desert so acutely (LOVE this part), and having lingering trauma from the Meduse attack in the first novella. Also highlights more of the Himba culture and her new friendships. Y‘all want to read this!

I‘m finally reading the Binti books (yay!) now that they‘re coming out as a complete trilogy on Feb 5. I just wanted to show y‘all that there is a new story tucked in there called Binti: Sacred Fire. I finished the first novella and knew when I reached this second story, I hadn‘t heard of it before and sure enough=new! I know some of you are huge fans of this series, so here is something to look forward to.
