The Dutch House
The Dutch House | Ann Patchett
Danny Conroy grows up in the Dutch House, a lavish folly in small-town Pennsylvania taken on by his property developer father. Though his father is distant and his mother is absent, Danny has his beloved sister Maeve: Maeve, with her wall of black hair, her delicacy, her brilliance. Life is comfortable and coherent, played out under the watchful eyes of the house's former owners in the frames of their oil paintings, or under the cover of the draperies around the window seat in Maeve's room. Then one day their father brings Andrea home: Andrea, small and neat, a dark hat no bigger than a saucer pinned over a twist of her fair hair. Though they cannot know it, Andrea's advent to the Dutch House sows the seed of the defining loss of Danny and Maeve's lives. Her arrival will exact a banishment: a banishment whose reverberations will echo for the rest of their lives. For all that the world is open to him, for all that he can accumulate, for all that life is full, Danny and his sister are drawn back time and again to the place they can never enter, knocking in vain on the locked door of the past. For behind the mystery of their own enforced exile is that of their mother's self-imposed one: an absence more powerful than any presence they have known. Told with Ann Patchett's inimitable blend of wit and heartbreak, The Dutch House is a story of family, betrayal, love, responsibility and sacrifice; of the powerful bonds of place and time that magnetize and repel us for our whole lives, and the lives of those who survive us.

I love Ann Patchett—the sentences she writes and the characters she creates. And I appreciate character driven novels. And I especially love stories centered on brother-sister relationships. So I liked this book and would give it 4 stars on GoodReads. But I enjoyed State of Wonder and Bel Canto much more. Maybe 3 stars on the Patchett Scale.

SamAnne I suppose the last quarter of the novel did not pack a punch with me. 16h
Butterfinger I'm listening to Tom Hanks narrate The Dutch House and I'm enjoying it so much. This is my first Anne Pratchett. 15h

The blurbs were not selling me but my book club picked this. I‘m absolutely loving it and should have realized any new Ann Patchett novel is worth my time. Also I have type 1 diabetes and so does one of the main characters. That‘s usually enough to turn me off a story but it‘s treated (so far) very well. 🎉🎉🎉

How many times have you said, “If only these walls could talk.” The Dutch House delivered. I could read stories of the people that lived in this house and life of the Conroy‘s-who lived there during this story like volumes of an encyclopedia. The characters were so in depth and the unbreakable bond of a brother and sister gave me all the feels. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ *and for my audiobook fans, Tom Hanks is the narrator. 😉

A brother and sister are raised in the beautiful Dutch House. Their absent parents cause them to grow very close and their relationship with each other and the Dutch House is the heart of the book. Recommend, but not quite as good as some of her other books.

Ann Patchett is a marvelous writer and this latest piece of work is no exception. I initially rated three stars on goodreads, then changed to four based on the writing alone. The lengthy obsession over what once was lost before letting go was hard to swallow, but I suppose many of us do the same over what has escaped us, not by our own doing. Overall, an excellent read, although I found the ending a bit preposterous if not unrealistic.

Look at us: Undone by a house.

That quote best sums up the plot of the book as the protagonists are still tethered to their past in the titular Dutch House.

I highly recommend the audiobook read by Tom Hanks.

Fast paced, engaging story. Started out better than it ended. I loved the relationship between the siblings, the closeness. It was interesting that one could love and one would hate the abandoning mother. I wished the character of the dad had been more fleshed out. Would absolutely recommend

I‘m not sure how I missed reviewing my last book of 2019 on Litsy (I did on GR?) but since I finished it NYE around 10:30 pm, I‘m going to blame the peach moscato. 🥴

I loved this book from cover to cover. A funny, heartbreaking, heartwarming modern-day(ish) fairytale, without the magic, but chock-full of memorable characters. I love Danny, but I especially love Maeve. ❤️

Also, I am entranced by this cover art and how it‘s part of the story.

⬇️

sprainedbrain This was actually my first Patchett, and despite all of the buzz, I really had no plans to read it until @suvata chose it for #LMPBC. I am so glad you did, Suellen! First audio book of the year. Gosh I love Tom Hanks. I understand why people live this book but they like character driven books more than I do. The end was slightly different than I thought it would be but still satisfactory. I had a hard time fully living the characters. I wanted to tell them to stop obsessing but everyone has their own obsessions.

“And so I made the decision to change. It might seem like change was impossible, given my nature and my age, but I understood exactly what there was to lose. It was chemistry all off again. The point wasn‘t whether or not I liked it. The point was it had to be done.”

I loved this novel and the house that is a character. The relationship between brother Danny and sister Maeve is dear and mysterious. This story is both fairy tale and family epic, and Patchett weaves together all the hurts at the end so there is redemption if not a neat ending. I‘m surprised more reviewers haven‘t talked about the strong religious elements in the novel, which I need to spend more time thinking about.

But it wasn‘t the house or the hurt or really even the story that kept me turning the pages. It was Maeve and Danny. This is dysfunctional family drama at best. Many tender moments between the siblings, their caretakers and stepsisters, but also infuriating moments with their stepmother, Andrea. Celeste was a close second. Elna surprised me most of all. And the ending was just the way I like it! Beautiful, just beautiful! And yes, I teared up a little. My first Patchett & won't be my last!

This book is about close-knit siblings who endure a difficult childhood, and it follows them as adults at different times in their lives. I listened to it via audiobook, and absolutely loved Tom Hanks as the narrator. He was engaging and made the character of Danny feel real to me. I thoroughly enjoyed the style of writing- looking in the past at different intervals to shine light on decisions in the present.

I‘m an Ann Patchett lover and that hasn‘t changed, but this wasn‘t my favorite. What I have always loved about her writing is the way she renders such complicated, yet realistic, characters, but there are two in particular in this novel (Andrea and Elna) who lack the subtlety that would make them feel real. Instead, they come off as what they are; characters in a novel.
