After really enjoying her two most recent books, I realized I needed to delve into Liz Moore‘s backlist. This is her debut and not nearly as good. It‘s a classic type lit fic rather than her more recent literary thrillers. Kel is a compelling character, but the other major character, Arthur, is such a sad sack that I struggled with his bits. There‘s also a dearth of female voices.

Arthur Opp weighs 550 pounds and hasn‘t left his rambling Brooklyn home in a decade. Twenty miles away, in Yonkers, seventeen-year-old Kel Keller navigates life as the poor kid in a rich school and pins his hopes on what seems like a promising baseball career. The link between this unlikely pair is Kel‘s mother, Charlene, a former student of Arthur‘s.

Finished this yesterday, a great read recommended by a bookstagram friend
I loved the unusual characters & their stories. The nearest to Eleanor Oliphant I‘ve found. Definitely a pick for first half ! So-so for second half & a so-so ending 😕.... overall memorable & I‘m glad I read it. It‘s good !!
Sudiii, thank you for sending me this lovely #booksandgoodiesmail with a sweet, sweet note. Towles is super on my TBR, have heard all the good things about his writing. From the blurb at the back of Moore, it sounds just like something i need in my reading right now! Looking forward to both. And i adore the cute clipboard and notepad. Thankee! 🍵❤️
@sudi
I wasn‘t quite sure what to expect from this one- but it‘s been on my TBR for quite a while! The audio version is wonderfully performed- and great for #audiocoloring! That ending though.... it‘s sooooo abrupt and I feel cheated out of the scene the whole book was building towards!!! Still, I did enjoy listening and would tentatively try another from this author!
I love love loved this! My favourite book so far this year by a long way. It had so much feeling in it, and again... I loved it!!!
Adoring this so far, I‘m about halfway through. It follows Arthur Opp, a 550 pound man who hasn‘t left his home for nearly 20 years, and Kel, the son of his ex student. Liz Moore‘s writing is so easy to sink into and it flows so well. I loved her other novel The Unseen World too which I read last year. I will definitely be reading more of her stuff!
#TimbitTunes Its been awhile since I posted about this book. Lots of #lonelylonely people inside theses pages, yet the story never feels bitter, sentimental or sappy. Arthur Opp is a shut in, a former professor who hasn‘t left his home in years due to his weight. When a former student reaches out to him, his whole life is turned inside/out and it‘s perfect. The only thing that “ruined” this book was the ending. #INeedABow #UghLooseEnds
This felt awfully long and not as cohesive as it could have been. I probably should have bailed.
For the first time in a very long time, I actually got through most of the books I brought on vacation! (Naturally I was worried I‘d run out on the flight back so bought 2 more just in case.)
Under the Harrow - 3.5 stars
The Clocks - 4 stars
Heft - 4 stars
We are really enjoying Heft so far. It's amazing how we have exactly the same taste in books.
Loved it! Heft had so much “potential” to turn into a sappy, Hollywoodian feel-good movie type of book, but it just steers away from all the typical pitfalls and comes out on the other side with its self respect intact. Liz Moore is awesome. And the audiobook narration was perfect as well!
Loving this book! (Conan has no respect for needles. Or anything for that matter.)
Now this book ❤️ I would most likely have listened to the entire thing today if Craftsy didn‘t have free access to all their classes this weekend. I‘ve been watching sewing classes from morning til evening.
#DecDays All of these books gave me #Feels solely because of their unique quirky MCs. So I guess I have a “thing” for awkward guys & grumpy old men 💁🏼can anyone suggest newer books that feature quirky narrators? (I think Eleanor Oliphant might fit that bill?!?) http://spoti.fi/2zUg6mp
Arthur Opp weighs 550 pounds and hasn‘t left his New York home for a decade.
The Times called this book “The most unsentimental sentimental journey you will read this year”, and Colum McCann called it “a suspenseful, restorative novel”.
I agree. A beautiful, sensitive, sometimes funny portrayal of the true weight of weight.

#FallIntoBooks One of my favorite #awkward characters is Arthur Opp,a former professor who is now a virtual shut-in due to his extreme weight. When a woman from his past contacts Arthur asking for mentorship for her teenage son, a unique friendship ensues. This book was UH.MAY.ZING but the ending.......😡😡😡ugh, I'm still pissed almost two years later!!!!
A beautiful story about a morbidly obese professor and a high school athlete and the things that weigh them down. Finishing this book felt like leaving friends behind.
"I believe we can choose to surround ourselves with a circle of people we love and admire & they can become our adopted family."
Gah. This book is wow. I think Arthur Opp is one of my top five favorite fictional characters ever! I adored this book! Sad and hopeful at the same time. Highly recommend the audiobook. ???? #JuneReads #20booksofsummer 3/20
Started listening to this audiobook on the first leg of my flight home. Too tired to read, so just sat listening to this enthralling story. Excellent narrator. Now I have to finish this soon! #CurrentlyReading #CurrentlyListeningTo #Libby
Love this! Such a sweet story! I've listened to it twice now❌⭕️❌⭕️ the narrator is perfection
#AprilBookShowers Liz Moore, if you are secretly on Litsy or somebody knows you and can deliver this message: #SequelPlease I LOVED Heft until the last page when the story abruptly ended!!! I mean like zero resolution, I was convinced pages had to be missing...I need a sequel! {photo courtesy of Google} Thank you😊
I wanted to love this book because while it's incredibly sad, it's also hopeful. I liked all the characters. The unanswered questions and the ending just killed me. 🤷🏻♀️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️
#MarchintoReading #BookishPetPeeves Ugh!!! If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a #crappyending 😠I don't like loose ends, neatly wrapped in a bow endings, rushed endings or stories that require suspension of belief. These three reads each fell into one of those categories, which ultimately changed my rating/ feeling towards the novel. Mischling is still a must read because the writing was everything and the story is important.
I'm highlighting this passage, not because it had anything integral to do with the book's plot, but because I'm a knitter and I felt for this boy, a cool kid, high school athletic star, who wished he could knit and do something with his hands while he waits for his mother at the emergency room. But about the book: I loved it. It's not action-packed, but rather character driven. Likable, yet sad and lonely characters. The ending is hopeful.
Halfway through my current read and I'm really enjoying this one so far. I love character driven books. There are sad, smart, lonely ones in here--a morbidly obese academic, a drunk and sick mother, an athletic son, a tiny pregnant maid....I can't wait to see how this unfolds.
First book finished. This was not the story that I expected it to be, but it was so beautiful. It gave me all of the feels. (Sadly Raz has removed a lot of those feels from my legs right now). #24in48 #lapdogsoflitsy
#Photoadaynov16 #threwitacrosstheroom So, technically I didn't throw it, because I read it on my IPad but....the burning anger that over took me as I kept slapping the button to turn the page only to discover the Ebook had REALLY ended, was unnerving 😡😡😡I was sure I was missing pages! The ending was Horrible!!! And I was actually falling for this book...Arthur Opp could have been an OVE or an A.J. FIKRY🙃I'm still pissed 8 months later!
I picked up this book on sale at Audible. For some reason I misread the description and thought it was a mystery. Nonetheless, it was an interesting read that kept me waiting for the two parallel stories to merge. Overall, it was a great book. However, as @Cinfhen had warned me, the ending was highly disappointing. It is because I have that lingering taste in my mouth that I rated a so-so. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Listened via Audible. Love, love, loved the characters. Didn't want it to end.
Starting this audio. Loving the narrator. Perfection.
This isn't the book I want it to be, but objectively, it's a good book. Does that happen to anyone else? I'm feeling a little frustrated.
Also thanks for continuing to follow me, comment and like, even when I don't have enough time to look at my feed a lot. Things will cool down in a few weeks. #movingproblems #newjob #startingover 😃😃😎
I just started listening to this. I hope I enjoy it as much as Unseen World! I'm so tired these days from move prep, I don't want to read at night. Audiobooks have been wonderful and kept me away from trashy TV. 😉😃
I choose Heft by Liz Moore as #underhypedbook for #Augustphotochallenge. I found heaps of attention and buzz placed on Jami Attenberg's The Middlesteins instead. It's so underwhelming and not nearly as well-written or interesting as Heft. They are similar in content of story, but I think it's a real shame more attention was given to Attenberg's.
Oh crap! I feel cheated!!! Betrayed! Now my love affair is over...and I'm a bit broken hearted.💔 Until I turned the last page Heft was everything I look for in a novel. A cast of memorable characters, strong writing, genuine, real, poignant, relevant, human and then it f@cking ended.
Sometimes you read a book and it manages to carve out a spot in your heart. Heft has done just that! As much as I want to finish the book, I'm not ready to let go of these characters. Really loving this read❣
"Baseball is the loneliest sport to play for someone who does not have a father" I'm really loving the writing and ability of Liz Moore to capture such complex vulnerability.
Just started my June book club pick....
Seriously, I think I may be falling in love with a new book🤓💕 I'm getting those A. J. Fikry vibes
