I listened to the audio and most of it was not actually interesting enough to listen to. So, I missed most of it. I found many names caught my attention, though, for some reason. So, I seemed to notice when names were mentioned, but didn‘t pay enough attention to what actually was happening. I did catch a bit more of what happened at the end. And I did read a wikipedia summary maybe 1/3 of the way through the book. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Too bad the book itself didn‘t engage me enough that I knew what was happening as I listened, though. It‘s another of the classics in the “miss” category for me, though I keep trying them! 12mo

Chapter 32: The Beginning of a Long Journey

I get why Mr. Pegotty and Mrs. Steerforth we‘re at cross purposes— he only wanted Emily respectably married and she only wanted Steerforth back home single. But what was Dartle‘s motivation to be so angry at David for even bringing Mr. Pegotty?

Also, this illustration leads me to believe I have once again missed the Christ imagery. #buddyread #readalong

CrowCAH Is this an illustration from the book? Because yes there is a crucification in the back. 2y
Yossarian @CrowCAH I don‘t know what it is really. It‘s Mr. Pegotty, but I don‘t know if it was Dickens -approved. https://libwww.freelibrary.org/digital/item/39487 2y
CrowCAH @Yossarian Gotchya. I wasn‘t really getting any Christian vibes when I was reading. 2y
Ruthiella Well Mr. Peggotty is self sacrificing in his search for Emily and all forgiving with his light in the window. It isn‘t quite the lengths that Sidney Carlton goes to in A Tale of Two Cities, however. As for Rosa, she‘s just angry. She loves/hates Steerforth and wants him/can‘t stand him near her. This turn of events risks estranging Steerforth from his mother and therefore Rosa forever. 2y
Ruthiella Also, as is not uncommon, Rosa‘s anger is directed at the victim (Emily and her family) and not the perpetrator. 2y

Chapter 28: Mr. Micawber‘s Gsuntlet

What I like most about Dickens is the subtle things. The first time David runs into Micawber unexpectedly at Canterbury, he‘s embarrassed that he‘ll reveal details about David‘s early life. The second time, in London, that‘s far enough into his past that he doesn‘t even think of it — even if he‘s not ready to forgive and forget with Miss Murdstone.

#readalong #buddyread

CrowCAH You‘d almost think it would be the opposite that David would reveal Mr‘s low circumstances and the debtors prison time. 2y
Ruthiella Interesting point! He‘s still quite young and inexperienced but he‘s learning. 2y

Chapter 17: Somebody Turns Up

David could not “make up my mind whether I liked Uriah or detested him.” I made a text-to-self connection here, as I frequently will go yours without knowing if an acquaintance is a friend or an enemy.

Also of note, my first page of Google results for Uriah Heep was mostly the 1970s rock band.

#buddyread #readalong

KathyWheeler I used to love Uriah Heep! I especially loved their album covers. 2y
Yossarian I don‘t think the band was very ‘umble. 2y
CrowCAH What an interesting connection- a rock band! 2y
Ruthiella According to Wikipedia, the title of their first album was titled “Very ‘Eavy…Very ‘Umble”. I remember their name from the‘70s but couldn‘t name a tune. I wonder what Uriah and his mother are up to with their information gathering? Also, who is this man taking money from Aunt Betsy? Could it be her ne‘er do well husband? 😱 (edited) 2y
Yossarian @Ruthiella There was certainly a lot going on with the plot, with innuendos and Humble Heeps and indebted Micawbers! 2y

Chapter 9: I Have A Memorable Birthday

The pic is from Wuthering Heights but it was the best I could find. David will forever remember turning 10 because that‘s the day he loses his mother. I think Dickens is suggesting she may have died from a lack of kindness. Mr. Murdstone seems actually cut up, but is that because he lost his son too? Or is he lamenting the fact he no longer has someone to psychologically abuse?

#readalong #buddyread

Yossarian It‘s true. It didn‘t even sound like Dr. Chillup stopped by to check on her. At first, I was afraid that Murdstone lived up to his name and killed her, I guess back then you could just die of being a little sad. 2y
Ruthiella @Yossarian I‘d say she was more than a little sad, living under the thumb of the Murdstones and constantly told she is stupid. 2y

Chapter 5: I Am Sent Away From Home.

David is sent away to school because he bit his stepfather (in self defense!). Peggotty manages to at least give him an affectionate farewell and gains a suitor in the process. After an arduous journey, for an 8 yr old, David arrives, the other boys are still on vacation, but David is made to wear a humiliating sign on his back as punishment. He worries what the other boys will think and do when they see it.

Yossarian A lot happened here! The the school master‘s “old women” supposed to be a cheap brothel? Was this a normal way of shipping unaccompanied minors? Was the school@pre-arranged or set up in a week? 2y
Ruthiella @Yossarian No, I think the “old women” genuinely live in a home for impoverished widows or the like. I think it was the way minors were sent across the country. Completely normal for the times but maybe not too different the putting an 8 year old on a plane with only the flight attendant to check on them. 2y
See All 7 Comments
Yossarian “On seeing the master enter, the old woman stopped with the bellows on her knee, and said something that I thought sounded like 'My Charley!' but on seeing me come in too, she got up, and rubbing her hands made a confused sort of half curtsey.” She started something that she had to stop when she saw a child. That‘s why I thought it might be something other than a retirement home. Plus the fact the schoolmaster knew them at all … 2y
Ruthiella @Yossarian I think the old lady is the master‘s mother. 🤔 2y
Yossarian I guess that makes more sense. It just seems odd, if that was the case, that he‘d say he had to visit an “old person” instead of his mom. Also, why he‘d have his mom living in the poorhouse! 2y
Ruthiella @Yossarian He might not want a student to know that it is his mother and that he cannot support her. Remember his shoes that are so worn, they can‘t be repaired and his dirty linen ( he probably only has one set of clothes). 2y

David Copperfield, Chapter 3: I Have A Change.

David returns from the best vacation in his short life (what kid wouldn‘t get a kick out of living in a beached boat?) only to discover his beloved mamma has married the controlling Mr. Murdstone. We‘re introduced to Peggotty‘s adorable family-particularly doomed little Em‘ly.

Despite foreshadowing, this was a mostly humorous chapter. I often forget how funny Dickens is!

#buddyread #readalong

Yossarian The foreshadowing was particularly dark about how how it might have been better if Emily drowned. I liked the scenes on the houseboat, though! 2y
Yossarian Also, that picture doesn‘t look anything like a boat! 2y
Ruthiella @Yossarian I loved this the scenes with Peggotty‘s family. So cozy and humorous.Mrs. Gummidge and her complaints juxtaposed with the patient good nature of Mr. Peggotty et Al. And I laughed at David‘s childish confusion about who was related to whom. 2y
Yossarian It definitely does a great job of being cozy and humorous while, in the background, is nothing but tragedy — an essentially homeless family living in a boat with orphaned niece and nephew — putting aside the troubles at home! 2y

Current #audiobook and I feel like Dickens was using the #NaNoWriMo form of writing, repeat full names every time you talk to them, about them, or think about them! Gets a little redundant.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian In a Victorian lit class I took many years ago, we talked about the repeating name thing and apparently one reason Dickens and others did this was because their novels were published serially in periodicals and there could be a long time in between chapters, so they felt like they needed to remind readers who everyone was in cause they'd forgotten. It's also why many characters have weird schticks like a catchphrase or a unique article of clothing 2y
CrowCAH @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I totally understand that, makes sense, don‘t want to confuse the reader between episodes. But in the same three paragraphs repeating one name like ten times, when I know who is doing what action. It gets bogged down with the names. 2y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @CrowCAH haha, that is excessive, I think they also got paid by the word so that's another explanation! 2y
CrowCAH @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian that was my thinking, pay by the word. So why not slip in extra words here and there and no one the wiser to the scheme! 😆 2y

Pickpick

I absolutely loved this book! It's Charles Dickens so yes, he does get rather prosy at times, but his ability to capture human nature is just brilliant. I couldn't believe how this book, published in 1850, contained so many people and situations that resonated with me completely. Reading this one as a chapter a day (until the end - I gobbled the last dozen chapters or so yesterday) was definitely beneficial for me. I think I may have been less ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) patient with DIckens's rambles if I had been trying to read this one straight through. As it was, 10-20 pages of Dickens a day was just about right. I fell in absolute love with so many of the characters here, found myself completely choked up on more than one occasion, and was delighted to see the ultimate downfall of the infamous and genuinely creepy Uriah Heep!

This was my January #BookSpin, finally completed!!
