Marlena
Marlena | Julie Buntin
An electric debut novel about love, addiction, and loss; the story of two girls and the feral year that will cost one her life, and define the other s for decadesEverything about fifteen-year-old Cat s new town in rural Michigan is lonely and off-kilter, until she meets her neighbor, the manic, beautiful, pill-popping Marlena. Cat, inexperienced and desperate for connection, is quickly lured into Marlena s orbit by little more than an arched eyebrow and a shake of white-blond hair. As the two girls turn the untamed landscape of their desolate small town into a kind of playground, Cat catalogues a litany of firsts first drink, first cigarette, first kiss while Marlena s habits harden and calcify. Within the year, Marlena is dead, drowned in six inches of icy water in the woods nearby. Now, decades later, when a ghost from that pivotal year surfaces unexpectedly, Cat must try to forgive herself and move on, even as the memory of Marlena keeps her tangled in the past. Alive with an urgent, unshakable tenderness, Julie Buntin s "Marlena" is an unforgettable look at the people who shape us beyond reason and the ways it might be possible to pull oneself back from the brink."

This was a more contemplative book than I‘d expected. There‘s some beautiful writing about friendship, adolescent insecurity and addiction, but what I liked most were the descriptions of how we reframe formative memories in our minds as we move farther away from them. (Clearly Sullivan is considering this as well 🐱 #catsoflitsy)

Finished tagged book last night, just as the clock struck midnight! It was a melancholy read, but lovely writing, heartbreaking story about youth & friendship & first loves & loss. It would make a great quick pick for Autumn #booked2019 #BooksAboutAddiction

ephemeralwaltz @Cinfhen @InBooksILive Yeah I felt similarly. Not bad but I didn't love it. I recently lent it to a friend, hopefully she'll enjoy it more! 😘😘👌 1y
ephemeralwaltz @vivastory I'm glad to hear that! Did something stand out to you in particular? I loved the chapters set in the present. 1y
vivastory The boredom & pervasive hopelessness felt like a very honest portrayal of rural adolescence. I was also really struck by how aware Cat was of Marlena's destructive tendencies. She was mesmerized by her & even jealous of her, but also really cautious. The present sections when we glimpse Cat's alcoholism really put a different spin on her perception of Marlena's unhealthy behaviors. 1y
ephemeralwaltz @vivastory you're very spot-on with how Cat is cautious of Marlena. We don't get many stories about that acknowledgement of the manipulative friend and, even then, how drawn the other friend is to those dynamics! 1y

This book, with its vivid and piercing prose, brought me back to my own experiences in high school—to the insecurity and recklessness, the urgency that bonds teenage girls together. I absolutely loved this book. It also broke my heart and made me cry. I am glad I made my own decision and chose to read this book. Beautiful debut. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ehhh. I feel like I can sum up my thoughts with just 🤷🏻‍♀️. It was ok. Not the worst but not anything I‘d call interesting. Honestly it was fairly derivative—the “troubled bad girls who do bad things and then one dies” thing has been done a lot, especially over the last few years. Wasn‘t much new here, and the drug scenes got repetitive. Did like the study of how this affects Cat later in life, wish there was more of that. Again: 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2/5 ⭐️

ephemeralwaltz Same! Liked this but also found it a bit repetitive! 1y

Finished this over breakfast this morning. This surprised me as a debut because the writing is haunting and Buntin really makes these characters come to life. From the blurb inside I thought this would be more suspenseful... So I think it's better if you go in without knowing anything about the plot. The story dragged a bit for me but I see how it feeds the narrational structure. Recommend if you like coming of age stories involving f**-up teens!

A very complex story about friendship, addiction, and secrets. Incredibly sad in so many ways. I found myself having the most pity for Sal, though - he didn‘t have a choice in what happened to him, unlike all of the other characters. All in all, a very good book. I think this story will stay with me for a while.

This is fiction, but it feels real, like it could take place anywhere. Life can really deal some shitty circumstances, and for many, it‘s very familiar. Removing oneself is a struggle and often impossible. I‘m impressed with Buntin‘s debut. I can‘t stop thinking about it.
