This book is not binding me. And I cannot read about cheating (or near cheating) right now.

I love his writing style in this book but the plot was dull. The surprise of finding out that Nicole was previously a psychological patient of Dick‘s was interesting, but it didn‘t get much more interesting after that. The back and forth in the chronology was a bit confusing at times. Annoyed at the infidelities on both parts. For how beautiful the writing was, I wish I liked the story more!
The writing of this sentence. So beautiful. So vivid. F. Scott Fitzgerald, I tell ya!
This book feels too “much to do about nothing” to hold my attention. Rich Americans being lazy on the French Riviera and in Paris, semi-witty conversations… no. Not now at least. #1001books
Started out stronger than I expected but also fizzled out midway faster than I expected. The story became a little placid and the ending was very blasé. This book had a lot of potential but it just wasn‘t up to snuff. Fitzgerald was just going on his name at this point and seemingly just wanted to sell another book, good, bad, or ugly.
Okay, the book blurb sounded good and since I do like Gatsby, I thought I would like this one too. I did not. Although I get the major themes of this book - relationships are complex, the need to belong, the need to be loved, mental illness - I just never got invested in the characters. Honestly, I was mostly bored.
#bookspinbingo - my #doublespin for this month & also a bingo!
#pop23 - book I bought secondhand
“He used to think that he wanted to be good, he wanted to be kind, he wanted to be brave and wise, but it was all pretty difficult. He wanted to be loved, too, if he could fit it in.”
I think maybe I simply do not enjoy the tragic romance genre. I don‘t relate to the appeal of this or Gatsby.
The book was first published 1933 and a character who goes by Dick and is married to Nicole signs a note to a friend of theirs as being from Dicole.
Did F. Scott Fitzgerald invent “ship” names???

I have yet to read this but it‘s in Goodreads for this prompt! A tattered old copy given by a friend 😅
Three classics that I really disliked!

Day 2: I adore this book.
7 books that left a deep impression on me.
Not really #aboutmentalillness but it does feature one. Also this is a postcard for the #litsylove challenge, not a book cover - decided to make a start on it. #magnificentmarch @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

@Suet624 What do you spy in the left bottom corner? !
Trying to keep this sentiment ever-present in the forefront of my mind.
That moment when the end of the day comes, no more chores to do, everything is quiet... And you grab your book and just keep reading in peace. Oh, that moment.

My next TBR Jar pick. #TBRJar
Finally reading this further cements for me that Fitzgerald is just not my jam. I found all these characters rather unlikeable and while it‘s not necessary to like the characters in a book, it certainly makes reading it more pleasurable.
July‘s Tequila Mockingbird book club pick is another classic that I‘ve managed to have never read before now.
Okay so I started this one on audio and I like the story, but I‘m having a hard time focusing. I picked up a paperback copy, but the print is too small to read without my glasses. They broke last night and I can‘t afford new ones until August, so I‘m putting this one down for now!
The beginning and the end were good, but the middle was kind of a narrative mush. I stuck with it because I love Fitzgerald's prose, but this took me like 2 months to get through. I probably should have just DNF'd.
Loving this spring weather 🙌🏻 After some yard work and gardening I can finally enjoy reading on my porch swing! This threeway situation between Nicole & Dick Diver and Rosemary Hoyt has some #taintedlove vibes....

I thought it was OK. Through the first third of the book I was uninterested but as I pressed on the plot began to darken and motivations of the characters became more evident. And everyone got more drunk and depressed and I became more interested. I didn't quite buy the ending.
Fun facts: I play basketball weekly at the high school F. Scott Fitzgerald attended: St. Paul Academy. Go Spartans!I‘ve spent many a night in F. Scott‘s theater.

@IamIamIam I see your American Psycho in Humour and Entertainment and raise you Tender is the Night in Crime, Thriller and Mystery!
Yet another #modernlibrarytop100 book that seemed a whole lot longer than it actually is. This book about a married couple and their various issues and infidelities felt so pointless and mostly lacked any kind of energy. There were very brief flares of beauty and insight but I was too bored to give them much notice. I really hope that Gatsby is better than this!
Very glad that “Baby” seems to have fallen out of favour as a nickname for adult women.
Once I knew a man who fell in love with his nurse—
Is this Fitzgerald throwing shade at Hemingway?! #modernlibrarytop100
“It was only a sunny little smile, and little it cost in the giving but like the morning light it scattered the night and made the day worth living.”
Next up for #modernlibrarytop100 is a library book that smells like it‘s been doused in perfume. This could be an interesting reading experience.
Just in: Fitzgerald Penguin Classics 😍😍😍

Fitzgerald used real letters his wife, Zelda, wrote during her breakdown in his fictionalised bestseller. Can‘t say I would have appreciated that if I were Zelda but the book is so good - my all time favourite and annual re-read.
Can‘t seem to tag you Cindy and Barbara.
This one I will have to read again. Initially confusing, then compelling, then finally revealing. Anyone who is interested in Fitzgerald‘s complicated life will see it on display here. Was going to give it a so-so, but can‘t do it to him.
Well, you never knew exactly how much space you occupied in people‘s lives.
