An American Sunrise: Poems
An American Sunrise: Poems | Joy Harjo
A stunning new volume from the first Native American Poet Laureate of the United States, informed by her tribal history and connection to the land. In the early 1800s, the Mvskoke people were forcibly removed from their original lands east of the Mississippi to Indian Territory, which is now part of Oklahoma. Two hundred years later, Joy Harjo returns to her familys lands and opens a dialogue with history. In An American Sunrise, Harjo finds blessings in the abundance of her homeland and confronts the site where her people, and other indigenous families, essentially disappeared. From her memory of her mothers death, to her beginnings in the native rights movement, to the fresh road with her beloved, Harjos personal life intertwines with tribal histories to create a space for renewed beginnings. Her poems sing of beauty and survival, illuminating a spirituality that connects her to her ancestors and thrums with the quiet anger of living in the ruins of injustice. A descendent of storytellers and one of our finestand most complicatedpoets (Los Angeles Review of Books), Joy Harjo continues her legacy with this latest powerful collection.

A series of poems examining Harjo‘s heritage, including such events like the Trail of Tears.

Just as good as her memoir that I read last year. Powerful and emotional, Harjo‘s examination of her personal identity as well as the larger identity of her community are stark. Absolutely worth listening to her read this herself! #TheSealeyChallenge 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Another from @IndoorDame ‘s #auldlangspine list — one I‘d never pick up on my own. I‘m typically not a reader of poetry but I‘ve been interested in Joy Harjo, so this seemed like a perfect start to her work. And it is beautiful! Featuring imagery from her own personal life (an especially moving scene at her mother‘s deathbed), as well as the collective Native American experience, ie the Trail of Tears. The audio (read by Harjo) is perfection!

IndoorDame Harjo is such a great poet to jump in with for non poetry readers. And I totally agree about the audio on this one! 11mo
SamAnne I absolutely loved this collection. Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings is just as wonderful! 11mo
monalyisha I listened to a couple of her memoirs; they were wonderful. You have to get yourself into a whole different headspace to understand and appreciate them — which is a good thing! Her prose writing is no more straightforward than her poetry. 😉 11mo
Suet624 I often get chills when I read Harjo. 11mo

Most poets are terrible readers, but I do have a small list of poets who I‘ll listen to, & Joy Harjo is absolutely on it. In fact, most poets actually willing to sing lines meant to be sung make my list. Listening is a different experience though, so I don‘t listen to the audio of collections I haven‘t read in print. I couldn‘t sleep last night so I listened to this. I never fail to feel inspired by her, that such power can have a quiet quality.

DivineDiana I had the pleasure of attending a program at The Barnes Foundation where she was interviewed. In addition to reciting her poetry, she sang and played a Native instrument. A powerful woman. ❤️ 1y
IndoorDame @DivineDiana that sounds amazing! ❤️ 1y
SamAnne All the feels for this collection. It‘s in my small stack of poetry collections I regularly revisit. I will need to try listening to it. 1y

My husband and I chose to listen to this on audio together. It‘s read by the author which, undoubtedly, brings more power to the poetry. However, I do think I would have preferred to have read the text version. I have a difficult time with auditory processing and, as a poetry lover, I don‘t want my processing issues to interfere with my appreciation for the depth.

1️⃣ I have been reading more poetry lately & this one read in April was amazing—I read & then listened to the audiobook. Stunning!🌅

2️⃣ 🔎🗂👮🏼🔪⚰️⚖️🔬🧠🧩💡🧶☕️🗝🔦

3️⃣ I 🖤 mysteries (if you couldn‘t tell) because they run the gamut from thriller to police/FBI procedural to cozy. I like the twists & turns & trying to puzzle out the clues & solve them.

It's not April anymore, but I'm still reading poetry. Harjo presents the Trail of Tears with such urgency. She places it in the context of music contemporary to the time, bending time so that everything feels recent. Emily Dickinson, for example, her poetry is so prevalent and I don't think of her as the distant past. She was six years old when Harjo's family was forced to leave their homes.

I read this collection as part of #BigReadHawaii & the #NationalPoetryMonthChallenge through my local library & took part in a Zoom book discussion with a UH Professor Emeritus this week. Beautiful, powerful & moving. The discussion host mentioned we should listen to the book read by the author & available through the library (& part of my Audible membership too) & a did that today—even more moving & immersive. I am no poetry expert & like⬇️

DebinHawaii … poetry that moves me & is accessible & Harjo‘s poetry is.

Impactful poems. Joy Harjo reflects on the historical events that affected her ancestors and the Native Americans; she also shares her experiences from her own life and family. So much loss, grief, injustice.

I listened to this short but powerful poetry collection last night before going to bed. #Freebie #AudiblePlus 🎧 Joy Harjo is the first Native American to be honored with title US Poet Laureate. Here she invokes the hardships, violence and displacement that has marked hundreds of years of Native American history, sharing her own families plight as they were forced to walk the Trail of Tears. She also blends current US policy to the narrative 👇🏼

TrishB Oh I have these ready to read 👍🏻 looking forward to it. 4y

Mehso-so

So-so is my reaction, not a criticism of Harjo's work. I realized my poetry-reading skills are out-of-practice. Reading poems demands a different consciousness than prose. Yikes - why did I stray away from poetry for so long??

I've heard that Harjo is brilliant live, and she uses music and song both as a poetic device and as themes. Next time, I'll find her on audio or video. I feel like I'm missing out by reading only text. #dw2021 #21myown

Quite wonderful. I listened to the audiobook, read (and sung) by the author, and would thoroughly recommend it. I will, however, look out for a print copy, as I‘d like to spend more time with some of the poems.

These poems are a very personal look at the legacy of the trail of tears, as Harjo returns to her ancestral homeland and tells her family stories. Beautifully written, and so many things that I just had no clue about. 💔 One to read again.

5 Stars. So glad Trump doesn't appoint the U.S. Poet Laureate. Poems for our times. Poems documenting crimes against people & land, the struggle before us, the hope & promise of a better world. Interestingly, one of the poems I loved (By the Way) was dedicated to Adrienne Rich and references James Baldwin, two of the authors I'm planning to read more of this month.

SamAnne Poems that particularly resonated were The Fight, How to Write a Poem in a Time of War, First Morning (Rest in Power Palouse Tribal Chief Jesse Nightwalker--it felt written for you), An American Sunrise, Bless this Land, By the Way. I have a poetry stack next to my bed so I can revisit poems in the morning before facing the news. Harjo is joining Terrence Smith, Traci Smith and Adrienne Rich. 5y
