This book lingered on my shelf following controversy from the first book about who has the right to tell Cilka‘s story. I‘m glad I read it and felt the author well-defended in both preface and afterward her effort to write and her wish to honor the memory of the real life Cilka. But female rape survivors of Nazi war camps were subjected to chargers of sleeping with the enemy an sentenced gulogs in Siberia. That‘s so wrong.

marleed @CoverToCoverGirl every time I get to thinking about WWII HF can‘t teach me anything I haven‘t already read, I stand corrected. I had no idea camp survivors were charged with crimes for the ways in which they survived (as if submitting to multiple rapes to survive is a crime) and sent to prison camps in Siberia for an obscene amount of years. Heartbreaking. 2w

This is the life and survival of Cecilia “Cilka” Klein during her time at the Auschwitz concentration camp and the years that follow. Many are released, it is just the beginning of more years of hard labor and struggling to survive for Cilka. She can‘t help but to question many of the practices to which she finds deplorable. Cilka‘s Journey is one of survival and empowerment. After 10 years, she is released only to decide how to start a new life.

I read the Tattooist of Auschwitz and this is its sequel and in no means is it second best. So good. Based on a true story and I could only hope to be as strong as Cilka. I went to Auschwitz-Birkenau when we lived in Brussels years ago. I can still…to this day remember EXACTLY how I felt and the ghost who still remained. Maybe this is why this story resonates with me so very much.

This is the sequel to The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and what a sequel it is! Well written and beautifully crafted by an author who apparently cares about her subject. Cilka was an amazingly strong person. This was a difficult novel to read because of what Cilka went through, but it‘s worth the time and effort. Cilka was a perfect example of the triumph of the human spirit. I highly recommend this. TW: rape, violence, mental/verbal/physical abuse.

11/21/2020 A companion book to The Tatooist of Auschwitz follows the story of Cilka Klein after the camp was liberated. Cilka was sentenced to labor camps for war crimes since she “helped” the Nazis. Her story is heartbreaking, but I admire her strength and resilience.

Before I start reading I decided to keep in mind the controversies and protests of Cilka‘s family but to keep an open mind to the story.

I found I didn‘t enjoy it as much as her first one unfortunately. I think the story in itself is incredible and these are the types of stories we should hear about but I thought the writing was very flat and that each character spoke in the same voice, no one had a unique voice. I was disappointed.

I don‘t normally do read alikes(?) - (a fiction and a non fiction on the same subject at the same time) but Because of the way my library holds came in. I am listening to this book on my daily commute and reading Nazi Wives by James Wylie during my lunch breaks. The juxtaposition between the culture being described in Nazi Wives and the hell Cilka and the women the book was based on endured is jarring to say the least.

This book is the follow up book on the Tattooist of Auschwitz.
Although I learnt a lot from this book, I once again felt that the book lacked depth and personally do not enjoy this type of history being romanticized.
However, the horror of Auschwitz prisoners being found guilty of "working for the enemy" and then sentenced to work in similar labour camps in the Soviet Union (the Gulags), is truly heartbreaking.

Cilka‘s Journey is heartbreaking and beautiful just as The Tattooist of Auschwitz was. How much can one woman endure? This is mind bogglingly horrific but she puts one foot in front of the other every day and persists for years. I can‘t wrap my head around it. To spend 3 years at Auschwitz to be then sentenced to 15 more years in a Russian work camp for collaborating with the enemy. Her bravery and loyalty to her friends is unmatched.

What's your next read? I just got this autographed beauty. It's by the author of "The Tattooist of Auschwitz." If you haven't read that, holy geeze, put that on your TBR! I've had a fascination with WWII historical fiction/non-fiction ever since I was in elementary school. I think I read "The Diary of Anne Frank" in 4th grade. I've gobbled up so many WWII books since, particularly ones about the Jewish plight. #mynextread

I love historical fiction, but I‘m getting some WWII fiction fatigue. Am I the only one? (That and Tudor England). I did start this one because I am determined to get through my TBR list!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I had to give it a little break for a while... especially with everything going on.. I‘ll come back to it because it‘s my favorite genre! 5y
JaclynW Over the years I've taken a break from that genre too. It's nice to revisit. The breaks are good. The topic is heavy. The book market on that topic is possibly "over-saturated." New, amazing stuff is coming out frequently. Your current book is on my neighborhood book club schedule for next year. We just finished The Tottooist of Auschwitz. 5y

Her harrowing tale of surviving Auschwitz to be sentenced for 15 years in Gulag for war crimes makes my heart hurt. What was her role at Auschwitz? Was she set free from Gulag? Does she find love? What happened to the person that Lale once told Heather Morris is the “bravest“ person he knew? Heather Morris gives us these answers in a beautifully written story that shows the human spirit although broken can light a way for others to follow

Sequel/companion to The Tattooist of Auschwitz, this is well written and well researched. Details about Gulag prisoners‘ lives were obscure when I was a child, and it took the death of Stalin for them to be released. Cilka, who was at Auschwitz several years, was sentenced to 15 years in Gulag. 😥

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ This was a simply stunning, heart breaking story, and hopeful story. Based on a true story, the life of Cilka emphasized the power of strength and perseverance in the most dire of circumstances. The writing was compelling and offered a very personal glimpse at the horrors of war and the long lasting ramifications of choices people made in order to survive. I‘m looking forward to reading more by this author.

A sequel to The Tattooist of Auschwitz, this is the story of Cilka. After surviving Auschwitz-Birkenau where she was forced at 16 to be a prostitute for Nazi officers, Cilka is sent to a Siberian Prison for being a Nazi sympathizer. Sentenced to 15 years, she proves again to be a survivor. A strength & compassion for others allows her to work in the hospital instead of doing hard labor. In an inhumane place, Cilka finds love.

Cilka's Journey tells a fictional account of Cilka's life and the horrors that women faced at the hands of Soviet soldiers and fellow prisoners after #WW2 ended. A great read if you want to see how women coped from years of living at #concentrationcamps. It really made me uncomfortable with just minor details of violence

Cailey_Mac Good review! I usually like 1940s novels, and was meaning to pick these up; I think I will skip them honestly, I don‘t care for historical inconsistencies 5y
Michellesibs @Cailey_Mac I agree, such a shame there are so many books of the market now full of inaccuracies, this period of history is horrific, it doesn't need any added fictional layers. 5y

An emotional and gut-wrenching historical read from Heather Morris exploring the world of the Gulag in post-WWII Russia. Overall, I very much enjoyed the story and thought it was well done. Lots of detail and good characters. However, the ending just didn't feel complete to me and I was left wanting a little. Regardless, this is still a very good read and a solid follow up novel.
