Deal with the Devil
Deal with the Devil: A Mercenary Librarians Novel | Kit Rocha
33 posts | 24 read | 21 to read
Orphan Black meets the post-apocalyptic Avengers in the vein of Ilona Andrews Hidden Legacy series by USA Today and New York Times bestselling author duo Kit Rocha The United States went belly up 45 years ago when our power grid was wiped out. Too few live in well-protected isolation while the rest of us scrape by on the margins. The only thing that matters is survival. By any means. At any cost. Nina is an information broker with a mission: to bring hope to the darkest corners of Atlanta. She and her team of mercenary librarians use their knowledge to help those in need. But altruism doesnt pay the billsraiding vaults and collecting sensitive data is where the real money is. Knox is a bitter, battle-weary supersoldier who leads the Silver Devils, an elite strike squad that chose to go AWOL rather than slaughter innocents. Before the Devils leave town for good, they need a biochem hacker to stabilize the experimental implants that grant their superhuman abilities. The problem? Their hackers been kidnapped. And the ransom for her return is Nina. Knox has the perfect bait for a perfect trap: a lost Library of Congress server. The data could set Nina and her team up for years... If they live that long.

Other reviews saying there isn‘t much “library” in this Mercenary Librarians story are accurate. The epilogue on that storyline felt like an afterthought. I wanted to like this so much more, but it felt like Trail of Lightning in a lot of ways. The focus of the book was more on Knox than Nina, and the “villain” reveal/turnaround was a let-down. And the big moment at the end? Completely predictable. Sad to say I was disappointed. #Roll100 #85

Yeah, turns out what I really needed this week was a story about people living in a crappy falling apart world, trying to figure out the best choices they could make for themselves and others.

Had a sh*t day and decided I needed a happy place after work. Luckily there is a Barnes and Noble down the street from my work and I had a couple gift cards from my birthday burning a hole in my pocket. #bookhaul #barnesandnoble #fantasy

Good romance and action. I found this a lot of fun and would certainly read the next book when it comes out.

I agree with other reviewers that there isn't much on the librarian side yet - maybe that will be developed more later in the series?

(Kindle cover)

CoffeeK8 I really enjoyed this one and agree, I want more library 3y

Enhanced humans battle against the corporation that created them. Alliances are made and broken. Hmmm... the plot was a bit thin, but it was full of action and some steamy scenes, so I‘m not complaining. The “mercenary librarians” bit was not explored much, but overall it was fun and I‘ll read the next in the series when it‘s out.

Honestly somewhere between a pick and a so-so - I would've liked more solid worldbuilding and more librarian-ing in the whole "mercenary librarians" thing, but I liked the characters and cared about what happened to them.

My fiance has never been a big reader but he's suddenly on a book kick! My new favorite thing is both of us cozying up with a book together at the end of the day. We're clearly both in a dystopian fiction space right now but with slightly different flavors - tabletop rpg/sci-fantasy for him, sci-romance for me.

Bookish song Nr. 22: Dirty Laundry

I wasn't far into the book, when I came along this Nickelback song (yes, I like Nickelback, sorry but not sorry) and I just couldn't help myself seeing the group fighting and flirting and loving.

There sure is some Dirty Laundry or at least some secrets to be revealed, while plotting to do some not so nice plans.

Actually, I feel almost the same about this book, as I do about The Emperor's Blade. Something between So-So and Pick. Would've been a Pick, if there would've been more Library to the Mercenary Librarians. But I'm quite surprised, that I liked this novel, even though it goes heavy on the romance and the angst. Will surely read the next volume. Not for the story, but for the characters.

Hiiii, welcome to the only book I‘ve read this week. I got married on Saturday and quickly learned there‘s a lot of things no one tells you about getting married.

Such as, it‘s extremely stressful. Even more stressful when you‘re trying to get married during a pandemic, the guest list is only 17 (masks required) and the grooms family has been exposed to COVID and can‘t attend. These are wild times friends. Wild. Times.

Laughterhp Congrats! I can‘t even imagine having to deal with getting married right now! 3y

This was a lot of fun! Dystopian romance with superpowered characters. If you like superhero romance (or superhero fanfic), check it out.

I wasn't a fan of Kit Rocha's earlier book Beyond Shame, but I'm glad I gave this one a chance. It doesn't have most of the things that bothered me, and now I'm more likely to check out the rest of the Beyond series.

(I still don't understand the sex appeal of cagefighting, though.)

"Mercenary Librarians" = automatic add to my TBR list. I mean we're already soldiers in the Information War so why not mercs? I really liked this. It was like they took an action film & made it into a book. If you took the show Strike Back, made the characters super-soldiers, & threw them into a post-apocalyptic world, that's about the feel of this. Lots of danger & lots of sexy times - all in true action style, so it was definitely entertaining.

Yesterday's #bookmail was awesome! The second book in the Kushiel series came out in paperback this week, so I ordered it to put it next to the 1st book on my shelf. And I had pre-ordered Deal with the Devil from the Ripped Bodice bookstore that came with a bunch of swag and a necklace created by one of the authors.

"??????????? ??? ??? ?????? ??? ???'? ???? ?????."⁣

The first book in the #MercenaryLibrarians series is extremely action-packed. Nonstop fighting, a kickass trio of unstoppable females, a group of 4 ex-soldiers & an army bent on stopping them. All 7 characters have an enhancement including super strength, intelligence or speed. This book will draw you in with it's high intensity & won't let go.

Deal with the Devil is set in the Atlanta area in the 2080s. Solar flares and storms in the 2040s destabilized the government. The southeastern US is controlled by a corporation called TechCorps. Nina is an escaped genetically engineered clone and leads a group of three women. Garrett leads a squad of super soldiers, the Silver Devils. The action and intrigue are non-stop. It was a great read. I'm really looking forward to the next book.

There was a mystery element that had me wondering who was the mysterious force pulling the strings and what was the end game?! The characters were interesting but I wasn‘t drawn to one over the other. As Nina and Garrett were the de facto leaders, I wish I would‘ve been more engaged with what was taking place between them and to them but I wasn‘t. They had chemistry but nothing that would inspire my adoration of them, which I had been hoping for.

I enjoyed this near-future sci-fi first in the Mercenary Librarians series. Set in the second half of 21st-century Atlanta, Nina is the leader of a trio of information brokers out to help the hopeless in her area of Atlanta survive. Knox is the captain of a group of super soldiers who went AWOL from their big tech makers to avoid senseless bloody missions. There‘s cloning, government corruption, cool tech, lots of action and of course, romance. ⬇️

robinb Good world-building and character development and a few surprises along the way. A few fairly explicit sexy scenes and some language and allusions to torture (nothing too graphic). And yes, I would be open to reading further adventures. 4/5⭐️

Oh my gosh! This book was so dang good! I was so hooked from the word go. I was not expecting to like this as much as I do, I never heard of it or the author, it was just an ARC that randomly showed up in the mail one day. But I'm so happy it did! I LOVE the characters. Love the storyline. The ending made my jaw hit the floor, the 2nd book had better come out very, very soon! 5 out of 5 stars!
