Eleanor y Park
Eleanor y Park | Rainbow Rowell
-S, y tambin Jerry Lee Lewis -contest Eleanor. -No estoy bromeando. -Pues deberas. Tenemos 16 aos -dijo Eleanor. -Y qu pasa con Romeo y Julieta? -Superficiales, confundidos y, posteriormente, muertos. -Te quiero, y no estoy bromeando -le dijo Park. -Pues deberas. #LittensLoveRomance Ch.9-12: Honestly, not even having a toothbrush. I‘m sad for this girl and want to see good things happen for her. I like that Park is slowly opening up and sharing his comics and his music. That would make a world of difference to someone living like Eleanor.

LiseWorks Yeah, what is going on in her house? No clothes, no food, no toothbrush? 10h
TheSpineView I'm wondering how long before Park figures out what is going on with Eleanor. I also worry that the violence will escalate. 10h

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.5-8: poor Eleanor! To be shoved off to her mom‘s friend and then left there for like a year. That must have made her feel awful and unwanted. It‘s not right to feel like you have to make yourself invisible. But then at school people notice her for all the wrong reasons. I can‘t wait for Park to notice who she really is and appreciate her.

TheSpineView The biggest thing I took away from these chapters is how people are made to conform. If you don't fit a mold then you are judged, looked down on and it starts from an early age. People can't accept different and different insights fear. 1d
mcctrish @TheSpineView absolutely bang on and why going to a bigger high school and then Uni/college you can find your people and not suffer so much 1d

OriginalCyn620 That was awful about Eleanor being shipped off to live with her mom‘s friend. I would never do that to my daughter! Poor Eleanor-she‘s already had such a rough time. 1d
maich Poor Eleanor. She lived with mom's friends. And now she needs to babysit her brothers and sisters. She had a difficult childhood. I find it interesting that she reads his comics on the bus. 1d
Read4life I feel for Eleanor. Not only was she sent to live away from her family, but when she returned it seemed like her siblings had all accepted their situation & she was alone again. 1d

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.1-4: wow. Kids are mean. But we knew that already. I feel for Eleanor - seems as though she has a complicated home life. I feel leery of Ritchie. He‘s going to be trouble I think. How do we feel about the setting in the 80‘s? Were kids meaner back then or the same?

mcctrish We didn‘t have phones only the origami folded notes so I think meanness was lesser but it felt awful just the same ( just didn‘t live forever digitally) 2d
StayCurious @mcctrish digital makes a big difference I think. Bullies can strike anywhere anytime 2d

OriginalCyn620 I‘m so glad I was a teenager in the 80s before the internet was a thing! I think it‘s probably harder for kids now with all the technology…the bullying and stupid/bad decisions can live forever online. But as a teen in the 80s, I had a blast! And yes, the school bus seat situation was a very serious thing. I love books with 80s settings! 2d
LiseWorks As someone who was bullied from grade 7 to 9, thank God there was no internet in my day. So at least I had a break. I feel like Eleanor home life is difficult and starting at a new school is tough 2d
TheSpineView I remember the 80s. I was in college in the first part of the 80s. Kids are mean so are adults they just hide it better. Did anyone else caught the reference to the devil? Then the bus number is 666. Is this an omen? 2d
maich @TheSpineView I notice that too? 666? Scary! Kids are always mean. Even in kindergarten. My daughter was hit by a 5-year-old boy in kindergarten. He had a period came up to her hit her and left. This went on for 2 years. This year it finally ended. I have spoken to the teachers and his parents. Apparently he has some trauma but his parents refuse to help.It gets worse as children get older. Teenagers can be cruel. 2d
SarahBookInterrupted I love that it‘s set in the 80‘s! And I don‘t remember kids being that mean , but I grew up in Canada…there was bullying but not so obvious I think. I do remember how Park is feeling when I could see someone walking into the “fire” and hoping they knew what they were doing. Although I was definitely quicker to help than Park was. (edited) 2d
julieclair The 80s setting is fun… tape decks, walkmans (walkmen?), Impalas, feathered bangs. But the mean kids? Not fun at all. I did notice the 666 bus number, but I‘m not sure yet if it was an omen, or just a little bit of humor because the kids were so mean. 4h

I've not really read any YA before. This kept flashing into my peripheral so I gave it a go. Sweet teenage love, the yuckiness of school, siblings and parents. And the despicable step father, the sad mother and poor Eleanor.
I liked the way Rowell keeps it real, not letting it become sickly sweet at all. Good ending:)

When a friend found out I LOVE Fangirl (as you can see) she recommended E&P, which is such a ‘tug on your heart strings‘ story, that if you were the Grinch, your heart would be guaranteed to grow 3 sizes. It is wholesome, relatable, and so real. And that‘s why I love Rowell. She can write the sweetest of stories that we can all experience. I don‘t usually go for a dose of reality but when it‘s done right, it‘s beautiful.

I haven‘t read this book since middle school (when I was obsessed with it as middle schoolers are) and boy is it horrible. Like awful. Truly. It‘s waaaaay more racist than I remember???? And it fetishizes Asian people in the weirdest way???? I just want to know why a full grown adult woman wrote this book about 16 year olds yearning for each other. It‘s just bad.

Delicate. Fragile. First love and the soft and painful ways it can break your heart. It was a really soft, warm read. Something that evokes the warm fuzziness in your heart. Although they fell really fast, I really do like this book and the story although some parts are slightly unbelievable. Yet I would still say it's worth reading.

I‘m so hurt. It caused me so much pain, but it was also an enjoyable read. Yes, Eleanor got a little annoying, but I think that was because I understood how she felt. Park was so in love with her and that‘s part of the reason that I love dual POV books, but it‘s also what caused me so much pain in the end. 100% recommend to anyone who‘s never read it and to anyone who cried reading The Fault In Our Stars.

Somewhere between a pick and a so-so for me. The story was excellent, a perfect mix between heart-breaking and romantic. Like others wrote, some of the writing was uncomfortable and unnecessary (in my opinion). Also, some parts of the book felt rushed while others dragged out. Still finished in less than a day though, couldn‘t wait to find out what happened!

This was maybe slightly better than ‘so-so‘ but not super great. It‘s a teenage love story and the love described between Park & Eleanor is just that: weirdly fast moving & at times cringely intense. And then there‘s the way Eleanor is made to describe Park—she never lets us forget he‘s half Korean. It was a bit uncomfortable.

Overall, it was ok. Some parts were good.

Finished this reread for book group tomorrow night; 8 years since I‘d first read this. It did not age well. And while Eleanor‘s story still reads as tragic as ever, my discomfort comes more with being more aware of Park‘s character. It feels like a case of #fakediversity where he is half Korean just to be an other, a matched misfit to E‘s redhead with a terrible family situation. I‘m still processing. I loved this the first time. Now...

LibrarianRyan Ahhh. Former staff member spent years telling everyone hoe glorious 100 years of solitude was. The book club she hosted at the library decided to read it, so she did a reread. 20 years later and a different perspective, she couldn‘t understand what she used to see in it. 4y
