Lost Queen, Volume 1
Lost Queen, Volume 1 | Signe Pike
141 posts | 80 read | 3 reading | 193 to read
"Outlander meets Camelot" (Kirsty Logan, author of The Gracekeepers) in the first book of an exciting historical trilogy that reveals the untold story of Languoreth--a powerful and, until now, tragically forgotten queen of sixth-century Scotland--twin sister of the man who inspired the legendary character of Merlin. Intelligent, passionate, rebellious, and brave, Languoreth is the unforgettable heroine of The Lost Queen, a tale of conflicted loves and survival set against the cinematic backdrop of ancient Scotland, a magical land of myths and superstition inspired by the beauty of the natural world. One of the most powerful early medieval queens in British history, Languoreth ruled at a time of enormous disruption and bloodshed, when the burgeoning forces of Christianity threatened to obliterate the ancient pagan beliefs and change her way of life forever. Together with her twin brother Lailoken, a warrior and druid known to history as Merlin, Languoreth is catapulted into a world of danger and violence. When a war brings the hero Emrys Pendragon, to their door, Languoreth collides with the handsome warrior Maelgwn. Their passionate connection is forged by enchantment, but Languoreth is promised in marriage to Rhydderch, son of the High King who is sympathetic to the followers of Christianity. As Rhydderch's wife, Languoreth must assume her duty to fight for the preservation of the Old Way, her kingdom, and all she holds dear. "Moving, thrilling, and ultimately spellbinding" (BookPage), The Lost Queen brings this remarkable woman to life--rescuing her from obscurity, and reaffirming her place at the center of the most enduring legends of all time. "Moving, thrilling, and ultimately spellbinding, The Lost Queen is perfect for readers of historical fiction like The Clan of the Cave Bear and Wolf Hall, and for lovers of fantasy like Outlander and The Mists of Avalon" (BookPage).

I enjoyed this origin story of Merlin (Lailoken) and his twin Languoreth, the woman and prominent queen we wouldn't know had existed without Pike's years of dedicated research and wonderful storytelling. Once you've finished reading, be sure to check out the author's notes for more details about the work that went into developing the story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was my second read of this wonderful story. I still give it 5 stars. I am certainly not a scholar of Arthurian legend but I am definitely fascinated by it. I love how we see Merlin‘s twin sister from a young girl hoping for a more meaningful and free life as a healer, but must succumb to her fate as a wife to a prince who will likely become king. I cannot wait to read the second book next!

MoonWitch94 Ohhh it‘s on my list! Glad to hear it‘s so good! 4y

I love a good historical fiction. And this was gooood. Driving to and from work the last week, I didn‘t see the grey highway, I was transported to sixth-century Scotland. I got lost in the tale of Languoreth and the court dramas. My only complaint is, that the ending felt a bit too abrupt. But that gives me a perfect excuse to read book two 😉

Good 6th century Scotland historical fiction. The writing is comfortable, with great historical detail & fantastic description. Good female protagonist & political/life balance. Pacing was my biggest issue, but the slow start eventually built up speed & there was enough to keep me intrigued along the way. I was a little frustrated with the ending, which felt both like a quick wrap up & a cliffhanger. However, it does set up well for the sequel.

‘The Lost Queen‘ is a sweeping epic, so it is not for the faint of heart. Historical fiction with a dash of fantasy - I truly loved every second of this novel. It is well worth the read, if you‘re a fan of historical fiction, legends & myths, magic & the romance surrounding the legend of Merlin. It reminded me quite a bit of the novel, ‘The Mists of Avalon‘ by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

‘The Forgotten Kingdom‘ (2nd in trilogy), published last month.

The dusk jacket hooked me with “a blend of Outlander and Mist of Avalon.“ RIGHT ON!!! Not only did you get the rugged, brash, strong woman feature but tie in the legend of Arthur/Pendragon made it mysteriously magical. A deep sense of faith and lore was woven into the fabric of Pike's image of 1500 Scotland. Languoreth was fierce yet flawed with a true understanding of not only her power within her role among men.

“Why must we have laws?” he echoed.... To attempt any organized society without them would be an exercise in futility. Laws do not simply dictate right from wrong. They provide measures of balance. In this way... They help men and women keep the course between right and wrong when they cannot do so themselves. A law broken results in a punishment, most often payment—the aim of which is to encourage correct action in the future.”

With similarities to Outlander & Disney's Brave, this story covers some of the historical accuracies behind the infamous legend of Merlin. Merlin, or Lailoken in this book, has a twin sister named Languoreth who narrates this story. Although Languoreth was an influential queen in her time, she has been largely missing from the history books.

An epic work of fantasy and historical fiction. Inspired by a time before King Arthur and Merlin, the story centers around Languoreth, a "lost queen" on a mission to become a Wisdom Keeper. The novel is well researched and elements of Druid culture enrich the story. The beginning of a fabulous trilogy that you don't want to miss. The premise is really intriguing and the setting is vivid, but I did not love this one. The characters were flat, the story was predictable and the pacing is rough. There were sections where I struggled to pay attention. The main romance doesn‘t feel authentic at all. I have an ARC of The Forgotten Kingdom so I‘ll give it a try, otherwise I might not continue with the trilogy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I added the audio to this read which was THE BEST decision!! Toni Frutin didn‘t narrate this one so much as she performed it. I felt tons of emotion while she read-happiness, sadness, apprehension. Her pacing and pronunciation are perfect; her accent is gorgeous. This story itself is so atmospheric and the setting (500‘s Scotland) felt like a living, breathing thing. This will be one of my top two or three this year for sure!!

You know that point in a book where you feel like you‘ve tipped over to the other side? It‘s build, build, build... and then at some point, it feels downhill. Either I‘ve passed that point in Lost Queen or its better to read than listen! (I did a little of both for the first half, with quite a bit more listening.. then my library loan expired!) This has good ratings on Litsy, and at some point I clearly put it in my TBR, but I fear it‘s historical fiction and I just can‘t with that. I‘ve yet to find one piece of historical fiction I can stand. Also, not a fan of whoever came up with the #historicalhussies group. Judgemental much?
#HistoricalFictionInaccuracySupportGroup @julesG @CoverToCoverGirl @JazzFeathers @Weaponxgirl @RavenLovelyReads @Birdsong28 @KCorter

GingerAntics This is an absolute NO!!! I just read a review that said the first 300 pages were so full of anachronisms they had to force themselves to read the final 200 pages (which were actually good). That‘s a hard pass for me. 5y
julesG Does it have inaccuracies or are you basing your judgement of the book on the genre? 5y
julesG That answers my question. 5y
See All 22 Comments
julesG And here I am, worried about one word being used about 40 years before it came into fashion. 5y
GingerAntics @julesG it was listed as general fiction, so I wasn‘t basing it off of the genre, just the description of the book. Then that review. That one word would drive me nuts, too. I suppose if you‘ve got a quirky character who is saying that they‘re trying to make it a thing, then maybe. 5y
Birdsong28 Oh no! If a review said that I would stay away from it. If you know that something hasn't been properly researched that is why I stick to authors I know that do the work. 5y
JazzFeathers I'm reading a book that's like that. Read 5 chapters and they are so full of anachronisms l had to force myself. And l don't know whether l want to go on, even if it is a NetGalley ARC. 5y
julesG @JazzFeathers Gah! The worst. I'd probably write to the publishers. 5y
GingerAntics @JazzFeathers I don‘t think they‘re going to like your review at the end of this thing. Good luck. 5y
GingerAntics @julesG @JazzFeathers that‘s an option? That‘s awesome!!! Maybe if enough people made a fuss, they‘d start making sure that historical fiction was at least accurate. 5y
julesG @GingerAntics Just one word, used in one sentence, not even in dialogue or thoughts. Makes me wonder where historical inaccuracies start. Anachronisms, false facts? Or words that were not used at the time? 5y
julesG @GingerAntics Yes, you can always write to the publishers, whether you review the book or not. You should do it especially when you don't want to review the book. 5y
GingerAntics @julesG yeah, it seems to be a very fine line, and I think where that line is depends on the individual reader. If it‘s bad historical fiction though, shouldn‘t that actually be reviewed? Warn people. I‘m still looking for historical fiction that isn‘t total crap. 5y
julesG I suppose not everyone is as finely tuned to this as we are. Most people just don't know anything about the historical period the novel is set in, or don't care about inaccuracies. As you say, it depends on the individual reader, and the majority of readers are just in it for the fun (switch their brains off as soon as they open the book) 5y
GingerAntics @julesG that seems to be the case. They get mad when you don‘t like this book they love so much. They get mad at you and tell you to stop being stupid and thinking so much. They say that stuff doesn‘t matter. They forget the “to me” part. There are some seriously aggressive Outlander fans out there. Seriously. 5y
JazzFeathers @julesG That's probably true. Sometimes l think *l* am the problem, not the author, because there are so many readers that enjoy the work, and enjoyment is what an author should be after. But on the other hand, if you really don't care for history (and this author clearly doesn't), why on earth do you want to write historical fiction? 5y
JazzFeathers @julesG Yes, l'll probably write to the publisher. I can't see myself finishing this thing. 5y
JazzFeathers @GingerAntics Don't know if mystery is your genre, but l've read a few authors that are really good. Nicola Upson (Cambridge in the 1930s), Charles Todd (WWI), Alex Reeve (London 1880s) 5y
GingerAntics @JazzFeathers that‘s what I‘m saying!!! If you don‘t care for or about history, why are you writing historical fiction? I‘m going to have to look up these authors. Some good historical fiction would be lovely. 5y
GingerAntics @jazzfeathers Half Moon Street sounds absolutely AMAZING!!! That is happening!!! An Expert in Murder sounds really good too. That series seems like it will be really interesting. That‘s happening, too. Working on where to start with Charles Todd. He seems to have a ton of books and none of them are numbered. 5y
JazzFeathers @GingerAntics They are all fantastic authors. I've accidentally read the 7th book in Upson's series, but l'm planning to read the entire series. Half Moon Street IS absolutely amazing. Every single character is a true and complex human being and the mystery is so believable. I've read the first and the second book in the Bess Crowford series by Todd and both are good, though l liked the first slightly better. 5y

This is the story of Languoreth, the twin sister of the man who would become Merlin in the King Arthur legends. It takes place before King Arthur's time, beginning during their childhood.

I don't know much about King Arthur and this is not the typical genre I read, but I found this interesting, although pretty slow in the first half or so. The ending does make me want to read the next book in the trilogy.

Avanders So fun!! 👏🏽🥰 Also... on a somewhat unrelated note... I happen to have an extra copy of the next #cbbc book again... do you want me to send it for your keeping (or passing on)? 5y
BethM @Avanders sure! I shared the last one with my aunt too and she really enjoyed it! 5y
