Lark Rise to Candleford (Penguin Modern Classics)
Lark Rise to Candleford (Penguin Modern Classics) | Flora Thompson
10 posts | 7 read | 20 to read
The story of three closely related Oxfordshire communities - a hamlet, the nearby village and a small market town - this immortal trilogy is based on Flora Thompson's experiences during childhood and youth. It chronicles May Day celebrations and forgotten children's games, the daily lives of farmworkers and craftsmen, friends and relations - all painted with the freshness of observation that makes this a precise and endearing portrayal of country life at the end of the last century.

Repost for @BarkingMadRead

Ok #hashtagbridade you have voted and here are the winners! I tried to make sure we are only reading a chapter a day so a few of the start dates are a little weird, we may be able to play around with it as we go, but here are the winning books!

Everyone is welcome. You will only be tagged if you for each book if you reply to each announcement.

BarkingMadRead Thank you for sharing! 9h

Ok #hashtagbrigade you have voted and here are the winners! I tried to make sure we are only reading a chapter a day, so a few of the start dates are a little weird, we may be able to play around with it as we go, but here are the winning books! I‘m super excited about this line up!!!
Everyone is welcome! I have a master list that I will use before we start each book, and will only tag you for each book if you reply to each announcement.. ⬇️

BarkingMadRead Just remember that my hashtags are often ridiculous and always chapter spoilers, so don‘t read the post until you‘ve read that day‘s chapter! 15h

eeclayton Great list! I was absent for most of this year's books, but hopefully I'll be able to join you much more in 2025. 14h
Bookwormjillk Love this list! Thank you! 14h
CatLass007 @BarkingMadRead I think I asked to be removed from your master tag list, but it looks like you haven‘t and I‘m glad. Because I‘ve changed my mind, keep me on your list and I‘ll see what I can work into my list. A couple are free on Audible and I‘ve put a library hold on The Bell Jar. But I may decide to read a book all at once rather than a chapter a day. That seems to be less overwhelming. 13h
AnneCecilie I would love to join for some of these 13h
BarkingMadRead @CatLass007 ohhh I‘m sorry, I probably removed you from the current list instead of the master! 13h
BarkingMadRead @AnneCecilie I‘ll add you to the master list, you‘ll only be tagged before we start each book, unless you ask to be tagged for the book we are currently reading, if that makes sense 🤣 13h
BarkingMadRead @CatLass007 you should definitely read at whatever pace works best for you! (edited) 13h
AnneCecilie Thank you 😊 that‘s make sense 13h
CatLass007 @BarkingMadRead It‘s okay. ❤️ Please make sure I‘m on the master list. And if anyone can remember the product for which the tagline was “It‘s a woman‘s prerogative to change her mind,” it will be appreciated. 13h
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! There are some good ones/ones I've been meaning to read here!! 12h

One of my BOTMs from my brilliant partner! 🥰 Even had a lovely little note written on the front page saying 'to be read with tea + muffins..' 😍 Unfortunately i didn't have breakfast muffins but a chocolate muffin with a tea will do 🥰❤️

MrT Wow. Thats a blast from my past. Read this as a teenager for my English Literature O level back in the 1980s. Remember liking it even though some parts of it were quite trivial and boring. 4y

What a lovely story. Through the trials of 2020, this book, along with the BBC TV adaption of it, simultaneously let my mind escape to another time and place and kept me grounded. I've never read anything like it- a sturdy but delicately carved social history of rural England in the final decades of the nineteenth century with a lacquer of fiction applied to it. ... (continued at https://www.librarything.com/work/14570/reviews/86975755).

bibliothecarivs @Milara I have not read or watched Cranford yet, but the similarity was mentioned in Richard Maybe's introduction to the edition I read (he favoured LRtC because its author was actually from the social world she described) and at one point in the book Laura, the main character, reads Cranford. 4y

Mehso-so

This one isn't in the database. A 100 page illustrated non-fiction book about the life in and around Lark Rise Country, recommended only for fans. It's not bad, but there are lots of pages of charts about current parish attendees and things like that, and I was hoping for a little more non-fiction about what the countryside was like during Flora's life. Still interesting, and a nice reference. Plus, real-life Zillah photos! 👍🏼

LauraBrook Forgot to add this is book 3 for #litsypartyofone! 8y

Lark Rise, take me away! Even with avoiding all tv and non-bookish internets, friends are still texting me. Ack, what is going on in this world?!?
#sonervous #eatingmyfeelings #movingabroad

LeahBergen Oh, Lark Rise! I've watched the show and found the book at a charity sale. Have you read it? I haven't got to it yet but it looks just as soothing (😉) as the series. 8y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen Haven't read the book yet either, but my mom remembers the book being similar in tone to the show, so if nothing else, it'll be a good read. Soothing is for sure what is needed today. 8y
